CIT YEAR 12 CONTACTS cit.edu.au/year12 year12@cit.edu.au Year 12 Head of Department: 6207 4025 Year 12 Office: 6207 3412 Careers Advisor: 6207 3348 Year 12 Student Support: 6207 4317 Student Counselling: 6207 3290 ASBA/VET Coordinator: 6207 4066 Disability Services: 6207 4929 Cultural Diversity Coordinator: 6207 3335 WELCOME The CIT Year 12 program provides an important pathway for people, who for various reasons wish to gain an ACT Senior Secondary Certificate or improve on their previous results. For many years, this program has allowed students from school age through to mature age the opportunity to gain their ACT Senior Secondary Certificate. Our graduating students have gained university entrance, entered further TAFE studies and obtained employment. College aged students (typically 16-18 years of age) complete the two year certificate. Students who have points from a previous college can transfer to CIT and complete their ACT Senior Secondary Certificate with an ATAR or a vocational qualification. The part time study of specific courses within the CIT Year 12 program has been recommended by the recruitment agencies of the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Defence Force for potential recruits who need to update their English, Mathematics or Science at Year 12 level. More recently, the program has seen an increase in demand for the Vocational ACT Senior Secondary Certificate whereby students include a Certificate II through to diploma as part of their Year 12 package. The program can be undertaken by older students as a one-year intensive course or part-time over two continuous years leading to the award of the an ACT Senior Secondary Certificate and an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) if required. The program is accredited by the ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies (BSSS) and is recognised nationally. The program has a block-based timetable to allow students to incorporate their work and family commitments around their studies. Our teachers are highly experienced and are committed to assisting our students to achieve their fullest potential. 3 Canberra Institute of Technology 2018 ACT Senior Secondary Certificate Program

Principles of Adult Learning CIT is not a school or secondary college. It is an independent adult learning environment where students: take responsibility for their own learning must be motivated must be ready to learn Program overview This program is designed for students who wish to: gain an ACT Senior Secondary Certificate studying Australian Curriculum courses accredited by the ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies gain entrance to university (via the ATAR) gain an ACT Senior Secondary Certificate whilst also studying a vocational course at CIT continue vocational study at CIT complete an ACT Senior Secondary Certificate started elsewhere study only specific subjects and receive a BSSS record of achievement develop required knowledge for specific tertiary courses and/or careers improve employment opportunities develop academic and personal skills Classes All classes are held at the Bruce Campus and through the CIT online learning platform, elearn. Class times and room numbers are shown on your timetable. Classes are 3.25 hours long. Attendance and Assessment Regular participation (at least 90%) and satisfactory academic progress are needed to achieve points for each class There is continuous internal assessment in each subject and students will be awarded unit grades each semester. A V grade may be awarded for unsatisfactory attendance and/or completion of less than 70% of assessment work. The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) will be compiled from internal assessment marks, which are then moderated by the ACT Scaling Test (AST). Canberra Institute of Technology 2018 ACT Senior Secondary Certificate Program 4

COURSES OF STUDY Biology T/A This course will give you a good background in many areas of biology, including human biology, genetics and cell biology. Practical work is used to reinforce the theoretical concepts. Students develop laboratory techniques, observational skills and interpret experimental work. Assessment is based on tests, practical reports, class presentations and research assignments. Units: Biodiversity and Connectedness, Cells and Organisms Business T/A Business is concerned with the essential planning requirements ranging from a small business to the broader roles of management and finance. Topics explored include employment relations, marketing, e-business, ethical practices, sustainability and future business environments. Chemistry is often called the central science because it affects all aspects of our daily lives and is central to many environmental issues facing the planet. This course will help gain an understanding of those issues and how they can be addressed. No previous knowledge of chemistry is assumed but success in this course will depend on a sound grasp of basic mathematics and students should also enrol in a mathematics course. The course is designed so that theoretical aspects are backed up by practical experiments in which students will develop skills in the collection of scientific data and its interpretation. The CIT has excellent laboratory facilities and equipment. Assessment is continuous and is based on practical laboratory assignments and formal tests on both theory and practical work. Units: Chemistry Fundamentals, Molecules Canberra Institute of Technology 2018 ACT Senior Secondary Certificate Program 6

ENGLISH Essential English A The study of English is central to effective social and vocational participation in a culturally diverse and complex world. MATHEMATICS Essential Maths A Essential Mathematics focuses on enabling students to use mathematics effectively, efficiently and critically to make informed decisions in their daily lives. Essential Mathematics provides students with the mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding to solve problems in real contexts, in a range of workplace, personal, further learning and community settings. This subject offers students the opportunity to prepare for post-school options of employment and further training. Maths Applications T Mathematical Applications is designed for those students who want to extend their mathematical skills beyond Year 10 level but whose future studies or employment pathways do not require knowledge of calculus. The subject is designed for students who have a wide range of educational and employment aspirations, including continuing their studies at university or TAFE. Maths Methods T The major themes of Mathematical Methods are calculus and statistics. They include as necessary prerequisites studies of algebra, functions and their graphs, and probability. They are developed systematically, with increasing levels of sophistication and complexity. This subject provides a foundation for further studies in disciplines in which mathematics and statistics have important roles. It is also advantageous for further studies in the health and social sciences. Mathematical Methods is designed for students whose future pathways may involve mathematics and statistics and their applications in a range of disciplines at the tertiary level. 9 Canberra Institute of Technology 2018 ACT Senior Secondary Certificate Program

Physical Education A This course involves students learning about physical, recreational or sporting activities. It engages students in developing active, balanced and healthy lifestyles using a comprehensive body of specific knowledge, principles and concepts.
