Ellen Murphy Email: murphye@mcgill-toolen.org Extra Help Hours: M-F from 7:20-7:50 Course Description This course will develop your algebraic skills and reasoning which you will need in higher-level math classes, in everyday life, in college and in the workplace. In this course, you will apply the skills that you learn to real world scenarios. In order to be successful in Algebra 1, you must master the skills taught in Pre-algebra. This course is based off of the Common Core Standards. Loose leaf paper Graphing Calculator (Ti-84 or Ti-84 Plus ) o Please note that we will be using this calculator extensively throughout the year. It is required for this course Binder (Optional: If you do not want to take notes on your ipad) Classroom Rules 1. Respect God and the classroom community. 2. Verbal Warning 3. Teacher Detention 4. School Detention 5. Report to administrator Homework Policy Homework will be posted at the end of each school day and submitted in Google Classroom. How to submit homework: PDF or photos only You can write out your homework on paper and then take a photo OR You can use a note-taking app (Notability or Good Reader) and export your homework as a pdf and submit the pdf on Google Classroom What to include on homework: Your name You must show all of your work and attempt every problem to receive full credit. Homework must be submitted by 8 am on the due date. Any assignments turned in after 8 am will be a zero. **All students are required to complete the homework assignments even if they miss the due date Absent: If you were absent the day the assignment was given, the assignment will be due 24 hours after the original time due. o Ex: If you were out Monday, the assignment will be due Wed. Submit the assignment and leave a comment in the Google Classroom assignment explaining why the assignment was late (ie out sick day assigned).

***If you ever have an issue with turning an assignment in on time, you must contact me prior to the time it is due. If you don t contact me, before it s due, it will be a zero. If you are repeatedly missing homework, I reserve the right to ask you to come in for a teacher detention to make the homework up. Make Up Work If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the notes that you missed. All notes will be up on Moodle. All homework will be up on Google classroom (see HW policy). If you know that you will be absent for more than one day, please talk to me before leaving to get notes and assingments. **Quizzes will NOT be made up IF there is a test covering the same material. The quiz grade will be the same grade as the test grade. **Tests can be made up by appointment Extra Help I will be available every morning from 7:20 to 7:48 for extra help. Please do not hesitate to come in and see me as much as you like. If a peer is willing to tutor you for service hours, you can also use my classroom as a space to do that. There will be some mornings when I am not available due to meetings. I will announce these in advance. Restroom The restroom is to be used before or after class, never during class unless it is an emergency. Grade Breakdown The standards by which each student will be graded are designed around a weightedgrade system where each assignment pertains to a category of the grade. At the end of each academic quarter, the final grade will be calculated in this way Unit Tests....45% Quizzes.25% Homework and Quiz Corrections...20% Class Participation and Notebook Checks...10% Tests will be given every unit. You will have at least 3 tests a quarter. Quizzes will be given every 2 to 4 lessons. Homework will be assigned most nights. Homework assignments will be 20 points each. You will earn 20 points if it is neat, complete and organized and 10 points if it is at least 50% complete. You will earn 0 points if it is late or less than 50% complete. Quiz Corrections will be due the day of the unit test to Google Classroom. They will be graded for completion based on if they are neat, complete and organized. If you do not know how to do a problem, you are responsible for coming to see me for extra help or asking a peer during the quiz review period.

Participation grades will be assigned every week. You will earn 2 points if you are attentive in class and come with your ipad charged. You will earn 1 point if you are inattentive or do not have your ipad charged. You will have a notebook check 2 to 4 times a quarter that will count for 10 participation points. McGill-Toolen Catholic High School Grading System A 100%-90% Excellent B 89%-80% Above Average C 79%-70% Average D 69%-60% Below Average F 59%-0% Failure, no credit assignment Academic Dishonesty Students are expected to be academically honest at all times. No forms of dishonesty will be permitted. Cheating of any kind, including sharing of homework and plagiarism violates our school policy. Students who are guilty of academic dishonesty will receive no credit for the assignment, the incident will be documented on the student's record, and the parents will be notified. For further detail, please see page 26* of the Student Handbook.
