I. INTRODUCTION CENTRAL TEXAS COLLEGE SYLLABUS FOR BUSG 2309 SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT Semester Hours Credit: 3 INSTRUCTOR: ( ) OFFICE HOURS: ( ) A. Starting, operating, and growing a small business. Includes essential management skills, how to prepare a business plan, accounting, financial needs, staffing, marketing strategies, and legal issues. B. Small Business Management is a required course in the Business Management degree program. It is an elective in the Applied Management, Business Administration, Food Service Management, and Management and Marketing degree programs. II. LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, Small Business Management, the student will be able to do the following: A. Identify management skills for a small business. B. Outline issues related to choosing a business, obtaining a return on investment. C. Create a business plan. III. IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS A. Attendance: Regular class attendance is required for satisfactory completion of the course. Attendance will be taken each class period. Late Attendance may result in instructor subtraction of points. B. Reading Assignments: The student is expected to read and study all reading assignments prior to the class period in which it is to be discussed. In addition, the student should be prepared to discuss the questions at the end of each chapter in the text. C. Class Participation: Each student is expected to participate in class discussions and to respond to questions to them. Personal stories or experiences that are unrelated to the class discussion should be avoided. D. Current Event Article Reports: In addition to text readings, each student will prepare two Business-Related current event article reports. Select an article from a current (within the past 30-days) publication (newspaper, news magazine, etc). Summarize the article by stating the main points in your own words. State your conclusions (opinion) about the article in the space provided. The summary and your conclusions must not exceed the space allotted on the prescribed one-page format (Attached). The reports must be typed using the attached format. A copy of the article must be furnished with the report. REPORTS MUST BE SMALL BUSINESS RELATED EACH STUDENT WILL PRESENT ONE ARTICLE REPORT ORALLY TO THE CLASS (NO MORE THAN TWO MINUTES). Deadlines for turning in the two article reports are in the course outline. There is a five point penalty for each late report. This requirement counts 50 points on the final grade (20 points for each written report and 10 for the oral presentation). Two report examples are attached hereto. E. Communication with the Instructor: It is the student s responsibility to initiate communication with the instructor pertaining to attendance problems, course completion problems, and other class oriented topics. The instructor should be notified in advance of an inability to be present for exam periods. The student has no automatic right to make-up missed exams or assignments; the instructor s discretion should be petitioned for more information in this regard. BUSG2309 2

V. EXAMINATIONS A. Major Exams: There will be five major exams as follows: 1. First Exam 100 points 2. Second Exam 200 points 3. Third Exam 200 points 4. Final Exam 350 points 5. Business Articles/Oral 50 points Instructor s Evaluation 100 points B. Spot Quizzes: The instructor may administer spot quizzes to encourage student preparation for class periods. VI. SEMESTER GRADE COMPUTATIONS A. The final grade for the semester will be computed as follows: 1. Major examinations (scheduled) 90% 900-1000 = A 2. Classroom performance 10% 800-899 = B A. Attendance 700-799 = C B. Spot Quizzes 600-699 = D C. Preparation 0 599 = F D. Punctuality 100% VII. NOTES AND ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FROM COURSE INSTRUCTOR A. Withdrawal from Course: It is the student's responsibility to officially withdraw from a class if circumstances prevent attendance. Any student who desires to, or must, officially withdraw from a course after the first scheduled class meeting must file a Central Texas College Application for Withdrawal (CTC Form 59). The withdrawal form must be signed by the student. BUSG2309 3

CTC Form 59 will be accepted at any time prior to Friday, the 12 th week of classes during the 16-week fall and spring semesters. The deadline for sessions of other lengths is: 10-week session Friday of the 8th week 8- week session Friday of the 6th week 5-week session Friday of the 4th week The equivalent date (75% of the semester) will be used for sessions of other lengths. The specific last day to withdraw is published each semester in the Schedule Bulletin. A student who officially withdraws will be awarded the grade of "W", provided the student's attendance and academic performance are satisfactory at the time of official withdrawal. Students must file a withdrawal application with the College before they may be considered for withdrawal. A student may not withdraw from a class for which the instructor has previously issued the student a grade of "F" or "FN" for nonattendance. B. Administrative Withdrawal: An administrative withdrawal may be initiated when the student fails to meet College attendance requirements. The instructor will assign the appropriate grade on CTC Form 59 for submission to the registrar. C. Incomplete Grade: The College catalog states, "An incomplete grade may be given in those cases where the student has completed the majority of the course work but, because of personal illness, death in the immediate family, or military orders, the student is unable to complete the requirements for a course..." Prior approval from the instructor is required before the grade of "I" is recorded. A student who merely fails to show for the final examination will receive a zero for the final and an "F" for the course. D. Cellular Phones and Beepers: Cellular phones and beepers will be turned off while the student is in the classroom or laboratory. BUSG2309 4

E. Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA): Disability Support Services provide services to students who have appropriate documentation of a disability. Students requiring accommodations for class are responsible for contacting the Office of Disability Support Services (DSS) located on the central campus. Reasonable accommodations will be given in accordance with the federal and state laws through the DSS office. F. Instructor Discretion: The instructor reserves the right of final decision in course requirements. G. Civility: (FC3) Individuals are expected to be cognizant of what a constructive educational experience is and respectful of those participating in a learning environment. Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action up to and including expulsion. H. Honesty and Integrity: (FC5) All students are required and expected to maintain the highest standards of scholastic honesty in the preparation of all course work and during examinations. The following will be considered examples of scholastic dishonesty: I. Plagiarism: The taking of passages from writing of others without giving proper credit to the sources. J. Collusion: Using another s work as one s own; or working together with another person in the preparation of work, unless joint preparation is specifically approved in advance by the instructor. K. Cheating: Giving or receiving information on examinations. Students guilty of scholastic dishonesty will be administratively dropped from the course with a grade of F and will be subject to disciplinary action. BUSG2309 5

Explain the basic characteristics of entrepreneurs, and describe different kinds of entrepreneurship. d. Discuss the importance of understanding your motivations and perceptions related to owning a small business. e. Describe five potential competitive advantages of small entrepreneurial companies over large firms. f. Explain the concept of an entrepreneurial legacy and its challenges. g. Define integrity, and understand its importance to small businesses. h. Explain how integrity applies to various stakeholder groups. i. Identify some common challenges and benefits of maintaining integrity in small businesses. j. Suggest practical approaches for building a business with integrity. k.
