PATHWAY GOALS & SALARY The goal of the Shasta High School Medical Sciences Pathway is to better prepare our students for the rigors of a career or degree in medicine. We have added a CP Medical Biology, Honors Medical Chemistry, and Honors Anatomy and Physiology courses to ensure our students have the tools they will need to adequately understand the challenging subjects that lie ahead. Students are encouraged to spend time volunteering and working in our local medical community in order to take on the challenges of one of the many entry level positions available to them in the field of medicine, and to ultimately take on the challenge of an advanced degree to enable them to find the career path in medicine that most fits their unique talents. MED1: INTRO TO MEDICAL MED2: CLINICAL This one-year program prepares students for employment & future education in the medial field. Students receive training on body systems, diseases, communication, college & career readiness & exploration via field trips and speakers. Students participate in hands-on lab modules in our fully-operational simulated laboratory room. From this course, students have a better idea of the variety of jobs available in the health field & come away with a better understanding of their areas of interest. The top students from Med 1 participate in Med 2. Students in this course attend seven months of clinical rotations in acute care and out-patient settings working with patients applying all of the skills they learned in the year one Medical class. Students have the option of taking one or more of the National Healthcare Association certification examinations. Many of these students gain employment as Patient Care Technicians or Medical Assistants. Students learn patient care skills, office administration, EKG interpretation, and Phlebotomy. DENTAL KINESIOLOGY/SPORTS MED This program is designed to give students the opportunity to acquire entrylevel skills in the field of Dental Assisting and explore career options. Students spend their time in both the classroom acquiring basic skills and knowledge and in our fully-functioning dental laboratory practicing their new skill sets. Students have an option to spend time in community service activities and are able to observe in various dental offices. DENTAL: Program Highlights Fully-functioning dental lab Approximately 360 Department-of-Education-approved clinical hours Infection Control Certification Ability to sit for the Registered Dental Assisting California State Board Examination with additional clinical hours Kinesiology is the study of human movement and the body s response to exercise. Students will study extensive anatomy of bones and muscles in the body. This course is designed to give each student knowledge on how to put together an exercise program, prevent, recognize, and treat athletic injuries. This is a lab-based course where students get hands-on training. We cover all careers available in the field of Sports Medicine/Kinesiology. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in an internship within the career field that interests them. An additional 5-10 units may be awarded depending on the hours of completion.
