Easy to read, great for beginners By Izzy I would DEFENITELY RECOMMEND GETTING THIS BOOKS! I really enjoy this series, this is a great place to start reading books specially if you already know a few basic kanji and vocabulary however I felt the price was a bit too high for the amount of content/reading you get considering there are other alternatives out there for free or at much lower price like children's books for about $1 to $5 and some of this books have a Japanese native reading them and have far more content. 22 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Learning Japanese? Try this! By Leaf THIS is what I needed! I really am striving to learn the language, and when you are faced with reading, it is extremely difficult compared to speaking the language. This is for the ultimate beginner-except you NEED to know your hiragana!!! Kanji is included so you aren't bogged down with endless kana, but don't worry if you can't read kanji, there is furigana! You get 6 very short stories-somewhere around 13 pages each-and they are thin, portable and not too intimidating. The books are bright and colorful, and it's easy to understand most of it purely from context if your vocabulary is poor. The listed recommendations to succeed with these readers is listed on the back: For 0, you should know around 350 vocab and around 400 sentences. I don't use Anki, have only started to study with Genki and at most can read some Yotsubato and Chi's Sweet Home-but not the whole thing. THIS is what I needed. Since I have listened to a lot of music, seen anime and j-dramas, I was able to recognize a lot of the words and since this is very basic Japanese, it was very easy.i can read hiragana and some kanji, but the most difficulty I had was when I didn't know some words. A dictionary like Denshi Jisho is recommended if you need to look up a word. The stories: Sakura, Daizu-about Soybeans, A dad late for work, Ichiro going to school, Yumi and Maria, and the last is about your friendly policeman, Ryou-san, I really enjoyed the last one personally. The CD: can play on your computer. Don't know about the car, but I will update this review when I found
out. The readers are native Japanese, and switches between a woman, and a man, and sometimes an old lady or little girl and boy depending on the story. Ryou-san in book 6 spoke very fast compared to the other readers. The voices were clear and I had no time following along. Is the price worth it? YES! Not only did I have fun reading, learning new words and reading out loud along with the readers and on my own, I found out how far in my studies I am. In fact, I felt really smart because I finished all 6 in around 3 hours, but of course the time it takes to complete it will be different for everyone. I happen to be a little more advanced in Japanese than I thought I was, which really boosted my confidence. If your'e taking the JLPT, in school, want to read Japanese, I honestly have to recommend this over Yotsubato and Chi's Sweet Home if you know your hiragana. The CD really helps your pronunciation, the stories aren't too long or too short, and you really feel motivated when you realize how far you have come! If you feel you aren't making much progress, it's most likely that you don't have enough vocabulary, grammar and sentences under your belt, but don't worry! You can only get better!! This series is a little on the skimpy side for the price. I went through the six booklets way too quickly and wanted more.
