IS 664 Custmer Discvery Class meets: Thursdays, 6-9pm Where: CKB 314 Instructr: D. In this curse, we take a deep dive int qualitative user experience (UX) research. UX research is the prcess f understanding why and hw peple use prducts and services. This curse will teach yu a set f research tls t understand user needs, investigate the user experience, and derive design recmmendatins. We will cver techniques like ethngraphy, cnducting fcus grups, interviewing, and analyzing qualitative data. This practical, hands n curse will give yu an insight int the psychlgy f user behavir and lay the fundatin fr students wh are pursuing careers designing, evaluating, r marketing prducts fr peple. Yu will have three individual assignments, each are wrth 20 pints. Each assignment will cnsist f perfrming the research and writing a summary reprt f the results. Final Prject (50 pints) Yu may chse t wrk individually r as a grup. Grup prjects are difficult t crdinate and execute, but are extremely imprtant because knwing hw t cmmunicate and cllabrate in small grups is a key skill required in any prfessinal setting. Presentatin (10)+ Paper (40) + Peer evaluatin (adjustment)

The grup wrk presentatins shuld be 15 min. They shuld give a high-level verview f the prject, data cllectin, and results. The final paper is 6 pages (fr masters students) and 10 pages (fr Ph.D. students) in ACM frmat. Yu may write mre if yu want but 11 pages is the max. Peer evaluatin is a reprt (template will be prvided) abut each individual s cntributins. It shuld be clear hw the team wrked tgether. If yur teammates identify yu as having a lw cntributin, yu will have pints deducted (up t 10 pints). What is user experience (UX) research, why yu shuld care, the difference between quantitative and qualitative research Cmpetitive analysis and literature reviews Assignment: cmpetitive analysis and literature review Week 2 (Jan. 25): The ethics f human subject research, discussing research tpics Week 3 (Feb. 1): Generative research Ethngraphies and diary studies Week 4 (Feb. 8): Ethngraphy (cntinued). Analyzing results Week 5 (Feb. 15): Ethngraphy (cntinued). Analyzing results Week 6 (Feb. 22): Interviewing (Semi structured) Develping a prtcl Week 7 (March 1): Interviewing (Data analysis): Talking abut themes, matrices and cding, Week 8 (March 8): Interviewing (Data analysis) Week 9 (March 15): SPRING BREAK Week 10 (March 22): Fcus Grups Week 11 (March 29): Inferring frm research and creating prttypes Week 12 (April 5): Prttype evaluatins. Final prject: paper (Due April 29) Curse Cmmunicatin Befre yu decide t send an email inquiry, check the syllabus. Yu are mst likely t find answers there. Please begin the subject line f any curse e-mail with IS664. Apprpriate e- mail will be replied t within 24 hurs t 48 hurs Mnday thrugh Friday. Emails shuld have prper salutatins and signatures. D nt use Mdle t send curse-related messages. Curse annuncements will be made in class, via Mdle. It is yur respnsibility t check yur email and Mdle n a regular basis; at least twice a week and the day befre class. Past Due Assignments All assignments must be turned in cmplete and n-time. Specific deadlines fr each assignment will be annunced in class and via Mdle. N excuses fr late assignments, including technical issues, will be accepted with the exceptin f medical reasns. Extra Credit Opprtunities There will be a few extra credit pprtunities fr research participatin in additin t thse fr excellent class participatin. The extra credit pints will be added t the basic student scre in final grading. There are n guarantees fr extra credit and it is each student s respnsibility t be aware f and take advantage f such pprtunities. After April 20 there will be n further pprtunities fr extra credit r t therwise imprve yur grade.
