Department of Teaching & Learning Parent/Student Course Information GERMAN V (FL 5250) One credit, one year GRADES 10-12 Counselors are available to assist parents and students with course selections and career planning. Parents may arrange to meet with the counselor by calling the school's guidance department. COURSE DESCRIPTION Students become increasingly proficient in their ability to use all communicative skills. They use more sophisticated language for oral and written communication, interpretation of spoken and written information, and presentations to audiences of listeners and readers. In addition, culture is an integral part of any meaningful language use. PREREQUISITE German IV OPTIONS FOR NEXT COURSE German IV Students who study one language for an extended period of time will have the opportunity to achieve the highest levels of performance in the five goal areas: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. Students pursuing an advanced diploma must successfully complete three years of one language or two years of two languages. Students may begin the study of a new language, i.e., French I, Latin I or Spanish I (Grades 6-12), Japanese I (Grades 7-12) or Russian I (Grades 9-12). REQUIRED STUDENT TEXTBOOK Komm Mit! 3 (Holt Rinehart Winston, 2006) SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS The teacher may choose to supplement the basal textbook with materials to extend and enrich the students understanding of course topics. These materials may be drawn from daily newspapers, periodicals, television and other audio/visual media, primary source documents, simulations, and computer programs.

GERMAN V GOAL 1 COMMUNICATION Communicate in German * Interpersonal Mode (IP) 1.1 Students provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions, both orally and in writing. Interpretative Mode (IR) 1.2 Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics. Presentational Mode (P) 1.3 Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners and readers on a variety of topics. GV.1.IP: Communication: Interpersonal Exchange pertinent information in German on contemporary issues. Exchange information in German to express personal reactions to a variety of literary sources. Negotiate in German transactions in conversation and in writing. Exchange in German level-appropriate information using available technology. GV.1.IR: Communication: Interpretive Derive meaning from a long sequence of events in German that deal with historical and/or contemporary issues. Identify information about level-appropriate topics in a variety of literary sources and other resources. GV.1.P: Communication: Presentational Summarize in German a long sequence of events that deal with historical and/or contemporary issues. Present in German information on personal and political matters. Present in German level-appropriate information using available technology. GOAL 2 CULTURES Gain Knowledge and Understanding of the German-Speaking World * 2.1 Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship among products, practices, and perspectives of the cultures studied. 2.2 Students demonstrate an awareness, acceptance, and appreciation of diverse cultures.

GV.2.IP: Cultures: Interpersonal Ask and answer questions in German to determine the usefulness of the contributions of the Germanspeaking cultures to other societies. GV.2.IR: Cultures: Interpretive Identify in German contributions of German-speaking cultures that have been useful to other societies. GV.2.P: Cultures: Presentational Evaluate in German the usefulness of the contributions of German-speaking cultures to other societies. GOAL 3 CONNECTIONS Use German to Connect with Other Disciplines and Expand Knowledge * 3.1 Students reinforce and expand their knowledge of other disciplines through the study of German. 3.2 Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the study of German and its cultures. GV.3.IP: Connections: Interpersonal Exchange opinions in German about other subject areas using the perspectives of speakers and writers of German. GV.3.IR: Connections: Interpretive Identify in German information that expresses the different perspectives of speakers and writers of German-speaking cultures about other subject areas. GV.3.P: Connections: Presentational Summarize information in German on the different perspectives of speakers and writers of Germanspeaking cultures about other subject areas. GOAL 4 COMPARISONS Develop Insight through German into the Nature of Language and Culture * 4.1 Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of German and their own language. 4.2 Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the Germanspeaking cultures studied and their own culture. GV.4.IP: Comparisons: Interpersonal Interact with others in German about the misunderstandings that occur from stereotyping people from different German-speaking cultures.

GV.4.IR: Comparisons: Interpretive Identify in German stereotypical viewpoints. GV.4.P: Comparisons: Presentational Compare in German the stereotypical views that people from German-speaking cultures have about people from the United States with those that people from the United States have about people from German-speaking cultures. GOAL 5 COMMUNITIES Use German to Participate in Multilingual Communities at Home and Around the World * 5.1 Students use German for meaningful purposes both within and beyond the school setting. 5.2 Students explore opportunities to use German for personal growth and career goals at home and abroad. GV.5.IP: Communities: Interpersonal Exchange information in German on the possible impact of German on their daily lives in the future. GV.5.IR: Communities: Interpretive Identify misunderstandings that may occur without knowledge of the German language and Germanspeaking cultures.
