rskills Tests Next Generation for ipad Overview rskills Tests Next Generation enables teachers to assess rbook skills and track students reading progress in the READ 180 Next Generation classroom. It consists of nine computer-based assessments for each READ 180 Next Generation stage, and two difficulty levels for each assessment (grade level and below grade level). Teachers may preview the assessment tests before assigning them and customize test-taking options for individual students in Scholastic Achievement Manager (SAM). Teachers may also review, comment on, and grade open-response questions and writing prompt exercises in SAM. Downloading and Configuring rskills Tests on the ipad To download and access rskills Tests on the ipad, districts and users must meet the following requirements: ipad 2 or later ios 6 or later Scholastic Hosting Services Headphone recommended (available separately) When the requirements are met, download the rskills Tests app from the App Store. rskills Tests Next Generation for ipad Guide Updated 08.20.13 Overview 3
Program Settings Prior to opening the app, tap the Settings icon on the ipad Home Screen. Tap the rskills link from the Settings menu. In the Scholastic Hosting Site ID field, enter the Scholastic Hosting URL. This is the district s unique URL that connects the district to its Scholastic server at the Scholastic Data Center. It is available from the district or school SAM administrator. Press the Home button to return to the ipad Home Screen. Guided Access Guided Access is an ios function that allows users to modify their device settings. Teachers and administrators may use Guided Access to control which ipad functions and buttons are enabled or disabled for student use. Logging In Tapping the rskills Tests app from the ipad Home Screen opens the rskills Tests Login Screen. Type in the SAM username and password and tap Next. Logging Out Another Student If a student launches the rskills Tests app and finds another student is logged into rskills Tests, tap the Not? link at the top of the screen, then tap Yes from the dialogue box. Students who do not have tests assigned to them by their teachers will see a screen indicating that a test has not been assigned. If students see this screen, perform the following steps: 1. Ask students to tap Log Out to exit the rskills Tests app. 2. Go to the rskills Tests Next Generation Program Settings in SAM and assign a test to students. 3. Have students log back in to rskills Tests app. At this point, have students advance to the directions for the sample questions. Answering Sample Questions When students log in and are enrolled in a test, they see the Directions Screen, which provides onscreen instructions. Before students take an actual test, the program requires them to answer two sample questions. Students also hear the instructions when the screen opens. Tap the speaker icon to hear the instructions again. Sample questions are not counted in the students test grade, but students must answer at least one of the two sample questions correctly in order to begin the actual test. To answer the sample question, tap one of the multiple-choice selections onscreen. After deciding on an answer, tap Go On. Tap the speaker icon to hear the directions again. Students may also tap Help for help with the program, or tap Log Out to exit the program. Taking an rskills Test Students may take the rskills test assigned to them once they have finished the sample test. After correctly answering at least one of the two sample questions, students read or listen to the directions for the actual test. Once students read or listen to the directions, they tap Go On to begin the test. Students who quit in the middle of a test skip the Directions Screen the next time they log in and go immediately to the question at which they stopped. Using the Test Screen From the Test Screen, students tap their answer choice from one of the four options. Using the Progress Window The bottom of the screen shows the Progress Window, which students may use to move through the questions on the test. Tap the arrow at the bottom of the Test Screen to bring up the Progress Window. Questions 1 25 of every test are in multiple-choice format. The first 10 questions assess reading comprehension skills, the next eight (questions 11 18) assess vocabulary/ word study skills, and the next seven (questions 19 25) assess grammar, usage, and mechanics skills. The last three questions are writing prompts. Writing prompts must be selected for the student in the rskills Tests Next Generation Program Settings in SAM. To move ahead or back to a question, tap the question number from the Progress Window. Answering Writing Questions The last three questions on an rskills test are writing questions. To answer them, tap the answer field to make the onscreen keyboard appear. Use the keyboard to write the answer to the question. Logging Out of Tests Students may tap Log Out at any point in the test, and their work will be saved. Finishing a Test When students finish their tests, the program checks to make sure they have answered all the questions. Students are prompted to answer questions they skipped and to review their work. The Progress Window indicates unanswered and answered questions. Students may wish to check their answers before submitting the test for scoring. To check an answer, tap the question number on the Progress Window to move to that question. Students may change their answer choices, then tap Go On to move to another question or tap Done to return to the Submission Screen. Viewing Test Results The Results Screen allows students to see how well they performed on their current test and compare those results to their last test. Results appear as a raw score (e.g.,19 out of 25 correct) as well as a percentage. Tap the arrow to view the Progress Window. Incorrect answers are boxed in red. Tap the number to view the incorrect answer. Students may use the Progress Window to return to any question screen they wish. A green check appears next to the correct answer. A red x appears next to each incorrect answer. Allowing students to view a corrected test is a default rskills Tests Program Setting in SAM. See SAM Settings and Reports for rskills Tests Next Generation at the Scholastic Product Support website (page 16) for information on how to change rskills Tests Program Settings.
