EMPOWERING CHANGE MAKERS BECOME A SHAD TEACHER CHAMPION. Find the next generation of change makers. SHAD is a month-long summer enrichment program where high-achieving grade 10, 11 and 12* students live and learn at one of our Canadian host universities. *SHAD 2019 is the last year grade 12 students are eligible to apply. AN EDUCATOR S GUIDE TO THE SHAD ENRICHMENT PROGRAM SHAD.CA/APPLY

FROM ONE EDUCATOR TO ANOTHER: I can only imagine how busy you are. We are always too busy and never feel we have enough time for the many things we are passionate about in education! So why spend a couple of minutes reading this? Because, SHAD is one of those things you are going to push other tasks aside for. Why? It is opportunity. It is growth. It is education. SHAD is still the best external academic opportunity you can assist your high-achieving, well-rounded students with during their high school career. As an educator, SHAD alum and SHAD 2016 Teacher Fellow, I believe we have a duty to provide our students with as many opportunities as possible, and I would put SHAD at the top because it has such a long-term positive impact on the students who participate. SHAD is one of those things you are going to push other tasks aside for. Why? It is opportunity. It is growth. It is education. Students who attend SHAD are automatically inducted into the greater SHAD community a network that stays with them for life. It is not uncommon for SHADs to start business ventures together, to travel the world together, or to even live in a community together. The reason I am writing this is to put out a rallying cry to all educators to learn more about SHAD, encourage students to apply, and see the positive outcome of your hard work. I encourage you to visit shad.ca to hear from the students themselves. Here are my suggestions to help you: I promote the program and actively seek-out applicants before the middle of October. I stress that it is a competitive program, challenging application and requires planning and timelines to be submitted by mid-november. I also promote the application process as great practice for upcoming university applications. I believe that students who successfully complete the SHAD application, regardless of their success at getting into the program itself, tend to have better success rates with university applications (both in terms of time management and subsequent program acceptances). I also remind potential applicants it is a competitive process and that if they do not get in on their first try, they can always try again the next year, and often the second time around they do a much better job managing their deadlines and quality of application itself. I look forward to awesome applications from your school and will sign-off with a pre-emptive THANK YOU! for your time and effort! Sincerely, Elissa Gelleny Senior Teacher, Math & Technology Department, Villanova College SHAD Fellow 1998, SHAD 2016 Teacher Fellow & SHAD 2017 Faculty 2 SIGN UP TO BECOME A SHAD TEACHER CHAMPION: SHAD.CA/SHADCHAMPION

WHAT IS SHAD? SHAD is Canada s premier summer university enrichment program for grade 10, 11 and 12* students focused on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) and entrepreneurship. Participants spend the month of July living on one of 17 host university campuses across the country and engage in transformative, experiential learning. SHAD is an unparalleled opportunity for youth to be inspired by living in a community of like-minded peers and to gain insights into areas of study they haven t previously encountered. We nurture their initiative, skills, values and desire to solve important problems while challenging them to meet the highest standards of ethical conduct, social responsibility and environmental sustainability. *SHAD 2019 is the last year grade 12 students are eligible to apply. HANDS-ON STEAM LEARNING BUILDING COMMUNITY GETTING OUT OF COMFORT ZONE A NETWORK FOR LIFE Upon completion of the program, students receive the SHAD Fellow designation, a mark of excellence recognized by universities, scholarship providers, and employers. Our 17,000+ SHAD Fellows have an incredible record of success - counted among them are 32 Rhodes Scholars, 88 Loran Scholars, 56 Schulich Leaders, and many Top 20 Under 20 and Top 40 Under 40 winners. Being a SHAD Fellow is a lifelong membership into a network of Change Makers who are empowered to make the world a better place. EXPLORING CANADA 3

FINDING FUTURE FELLOWS A QUEST FOR LEADERS WITH HIGH POTENTIAL SHAD values diversity and encourages all high school students (grade 10-12*) who have an interest in STEAM, demonstrated creativity and leadership to apply. We are looking for diamonds in the rough students who, though they may not be the most vocal leader or have the highest academic average, possess a strong desire to make a difference in their community. We value diversity and recognize that promising youth come from all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, beliefs and ethnicities. Business and entrepreneurship excite some SHAD Fellows while others prefer to explore science and mathematics. The SHAD summer experience thrives when it has a diverse community of participants. *SHAD 2019 is the last year grade 12 students are eligible to apply. SHADS ARE... ENGAGED they have interests that light them up and strive for excellence in these areas. INTELLECTUALLY CURIOUS they have a genuine love of learning and ask bold questions with an open mind. EMPATHETIC they give back and make meaningful, sustained contributions to their school, community, family and society. CREATIVE AND INNOVATIVE they take initiative to find brave, bold approaches to solving problems using their imagination. Do you know students like this? 4

HOW MANY STUDENTS CAN APPLY? There are no limits to how many students can apply and be accepted from your school. Admission is competitive so it is important that students put their best effort forward. Students apply directly through our website at shad.ca/apply. They do not need to be nominated by their school, though the application form will ask for a letter of reference from an educator. The application opens in mid-september and closes in mid-november. FINANCIAL SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE It costs nothing to apply. A range of financial support is available for those with demonstrated need, including bursaries and scholarships. PROGRAM FEE The fee to attend the program is $5,700*, which covers accommodation, meals, academic activities and field trips. The program fee does not include transportation to campus or money for incidentals such as laundry and souvenirs. * The program fee for international students is $9,500 CDN. Visit our website for details. SHAD s focus on accessibility has rewarded some of my students with the opportunity to attend SHAD that otherwise would only have been a dream. Nan Devitt-Tremblay, Educator at Senator O Connor College School 5

This is a paid opportunity to contribute and see the SHAD experience first-hand. To learn more about being a Teacher Fellow, email info@shad.ca. MAY STUDENTS LEAVE THE PROGRAM TO ATTEND ANOTHER EVENT? No. SHAD s success depends on the community of SHADs at each campus. If accepted into the SHAD program, SHAD participants must commit to attending full time for the full 27-day period, including living on campus. There are no exceptions to the full-time commitment to the program, except for medical or family emergencies, or except as required as an accommodation under applicable Human Rights Legislation. WHAT SHOULD A STUDENT DO IF THEY REQUIRE AN ACCOMMODATION UNDER HUMAN RIGHTS LEGISLATION? SHAD Canada has a proud history of respecting the diversity of the community which we serve, with a goal of empowering youth across the country. In that respect, SHAD is committed to providing a program that is safe and free of discrimination, and is committed to providing accommodation to individuals where required. SHAD will provide accommodation to the point of undue hardship, upon request, throughout an individual s involvement in the program. If potential applicants would like to make a request for accommodation under Human Rights Legislation at any point in the SHAD process, whether in the initial application process or after program acceptance, please have them send their request to info@shad.ca. SHAD will attempt to meet all accommodation requests, unless doing so would cause SHAD undue hardship. 11
