Project Management Professional Development Programme CPD/PGCert/PGDip/MSc This programme is a collaboration between industry and academia, to provide leading edge education for the professional development of project managers. The programme enhances personal learning through reflection and experience, improved knowledge sharing and engagement in a strong community of practice. www.mace.manchester.ac.uk/pm-pdp

Project Management Professional Development Programme (PMPDP) The PMPDP differs from other courses in that it is focuses on the practice of managing projects, not just on the acquisition of new knowledge and ideas. The acquisition of knowledge is important but it is the practitioner who can think critically and who demonstrates reflective capability that will be able to manage projects effectively.

Pioneering PM Education at The University of Manchester The University has been at the forefront of project management education and research since the 1960s. Indeed we would argue that PM education started here, with the first chair in project management and the first course being established here in the late 1960s. Project management pioneers such as Dr Martin Barnes CBE (developer of the Iron Triangle) did their doctorates here and later delivered some of the earliest courses along with the first Professor of Project Management, Professor Peter Thompson. PMPDP continues that great tradition of breaking new ground in PM education and research. PMPDP modules include: 1 Project Management Foundations 2 Project Strategy and Risk 3 Planning and Resource Management 4 Project Cost Management 5 Commercial and Procurement Management 6 Systems Engineering and Project Management 7 People, Organisation & Culture 8 Managing Research Projects 9 Project Quality Management

KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS Industry led > Flexible learning > Tailored education > Collaboration and knowledge transfer >

KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS Industry led The modules and their content have been defined in consultation with leading companies, and represent contemporary practice in the management of projects. The course is steered by an industry / academic steering group. This meets twice a year, reviewing delegate feedback and maintaining a high level of relevance to current practice. Changes to content are actioned as part of that review, making this a unique feature within the higher education world. The contents of the modules were designed to meet the requirements of the bodies of knowledge of the leading professional bodies around the world. PMPDP holds accreditation of both the Association for Project Management (APM) and of the Global Accreditation Centre - Project Management Institute (PMI), one of only a handful of universities that can make that claim. With over 450 graduates since 2003, and some 150 delegates currently studying, it represents the largest community of practice in the world of higher education project management delivery. PMPDP is currently being delivered in Singapore as a joint degree with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and in 2015 will be delivered in Brazil. This global delivery enhances the programme at each location by bringing in a strong international dimension, critical in developing the practitioners of the future.

KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS Flexible learning The programme is designed to accommodate a busy professional lifestyle and is a blend of face to face and distance learning. Residential sessions consist of lectures, leading industry speakers, workshops, seminars and case studies. The aim is to help ground all new knowledge and ideas in context. Assessment focuses on experience and application, rather than just demonstrating knowledge acquisition. We are pioneering the development of Peer Assisted Learning (PM-PAL) in bringing our graduates back into the classroom to assist in the linking of theory to practice for our current delegate cohorts. This ensures we are at the forefront of action based learning. Our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) means that even when delegates travel away from their home location, they can access materials and engage with colleagues and members of staff without interrupting their study pattern. The VLE is also used as a means of allowing virtual groups to work on tasks and collective assessments.

KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS Tailored education Appropriate industrial experience is acceptable for entry onto the programme in lieu of a degree. Participants can also undertake a postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma within the framework of the Masters programme (1-2 years for a certificate, 2-4 years for a diploma and 3-6 years for an MSc). Course units may be taken as a stand-alone short course for Continuing Professional Development purposes. A wide range of broad and shallow and deep and narrow modules. Course modules designed by experts in their field both leading academics and industrial specialists. Engage with delegates across multiple industrial sectors to view project management from different perspectives. Keynote speakers at residential events, adding high level perspectives on critical issues.

KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS Collaboration and knowledge transfer Collaborative research and projects encouraged. Assignments can be focused on participant s real work. Conduit for knowledge exchanges between academia and industry created. Tangible benefits for the participant s company can be delivered as an additional outcome. Practice based dissertation route to add value to practitioner and sponsoring organisation. Work with leading experts in their field, generating new ideas and knowledge through coursework and assessment. Opportunity to make significant change to project management thinking in the organisation, as part of long term professional development. Strong community of practice in Manchester helps the project management profession to grow nationally and internationally both in terms of numbers and capability.

The programme has 2 intakes per year, in April and October.
