Study English Language at Harrow College Our location in the London Borough of Harrow makes us a popular choice for foreign students. Our campus is next to Harrow on the Hill tube station - just a twenty minute ride on the tube to Central London. Set in a leafy suburb but in very close proximity to a wide range of shops,bars and restaurants, this is the perfect setting for learning English. ESOL Skills for Life English These courses are for Home and EU students whose first language is not English. We have classes at 5 different levels: Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. We offer 4 hours a week (2 x 2 hour classes) in the morning at all levels and 4 hours a week (2 x 2 hour classes) in the evening (7-9pm) at most levels. Exams All students prepare for Skills for Life English exams which take place at Harrow College: ESOL Skills for life exams Speaking and Listening December 2017 Reading March 2018 Writing June 2018 Programme of study The language skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing, as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation are developed using a variety of methodologies, both traditional and up-todate. Students enjoy learning in a friendly and supportive environment and carry out pair, class and group activities. Students will practice various reading and listening skills including detailed comprehension. In speaking, students will be encouraged to improve both fluency and accuracy. Writing instruction and practice will include a variety of text genres including formal and informal texts, letters and compositions. Homework will generally be set at the end of every class. An instalment plan is available for fees in excess of 250 for courses longer than 12 weeks. Fee Remission This is only available if you are undertaking a Skills for Life English course in order to prepare for work and: If you are in receipt of Job Seeker s Allowance or Employer s Support Allowance in the Work Related Activity Group. If you are unemployed and in receipt of other state benefits (Council Tax Benefit, Income Support or Contribution Based Employment Support Allowance). You will need to provide your Award Notice/Letter, which must be in your own name and dated within the last 6 months, as evidence to the Harrow College Admissions Department. 4 5

English as a Foreign Language English Language Development Classes These courses are ideal for students who would like to improve their language skills. The course focus is on grammar and vocabulary as well as improving reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students can join these classes for 1, 2 or 3 terms and study at A2 (Pre-Intermediate) or B1 (Intermediate) levels. English as a Foreign Language Programme of study Preparation for IELTS This course is for students who require the academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as an entrance requirement for a college or university course. IELTS test The IELTS test is booked online by the students themselves at an external centre. The test fee is payable to the external centre and is not included in the Harrow College Preparation for IELTS course fee. Materials All students need to buy their own course book and workbook. You also need a ring binder, lined note paper, pens, pencil and eraser. General English The language skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing, as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation are developed using a variety of methodologies, both traditional and up-to-date. Students enjoy learning in a friendly and supportive environment and carry out pair, class and group activities in groups of up to 25 students. Students will practice reading and listening as well as more detailed comprehension. In speaking, students will be encouraged to improve both fluency and accuracy. Writing instruction and practice will include a variety of text genres including formal and informal texts, letters and compositions. Homework will generally be set at the end of every class. Business English Our Business English classes are specially designed for students who wish to learn how to express themselves more fluently and confidently. The course specifically recognises the importance of communicating with clients and colleagues at different levels and in various work situations. Some of the topics include small talk in the business world, participating in meetings, negotiating and persuading, presentation skills, interview skills, writing reports, emails and business documents. 10 11

Useful Information Absence and attendance Harrow College expects all students to attend 100% of classes. This is the only way we can support students to make progress and succeed in exams. A minimum of 87% attendance is required to obtain a Harrow College course completion certificate. Non-attendance will affect visa extension applications. Students are required to inform the College if they are unable to attend. Teachers All teachers are qualified to teach English to adults. Harrow College also offers teacher training courses, for which students are needed. EFL students can attend these extra classes free of charge. Facilities and Enrichment Harrow College has a well equipped Learning Centre which offers supplementary resources for self-study and exam preparation as well as free email and internet access. A varied programme of enrichment activities is open to all students. College events allow students to meet and socialise with students from other classes. Quality Standards The EFL Centre at Harrow College is accredited by the British Council and is a member of English UK. This is achieved by meeting rigorous standards at inspections carried out at regular intervals. Accommodation London has a wide range of accommodation options for students including homestay with a British family, renting a private room or studio, staying in a hostel or living in student accommodation near to Harrow College. While Harrow College does not offer student accommodation, our International Admissions Coordinator will be happy to help and discuss your options further. Course Offer Conditions Harrow College normally runs courses that are offered. However, courses that do not recruit to a satisfactory level may be withdrawn or closed. Students will be offered a suitable alternative or receive a refund for all or part of their fees. If you wish to cancel your application we must receive a letter from you at least three days before the course is due to start. You will receive a refund of the tuition fee, but not the College registration fee or any examination fees. If you enrol within three days prior to the start of the course, no refund will be due. We do not provide refunds for any other reasons. Application and Enrolment In order to apply and enrol for one of our courses, you need to attend an enrolment session for a short test and interview.
