13 POLICIES and PROCEDURES ACADEMIC LETTER AWARDS Academic Letter Award is a recgnitin prgram fr Mlalla High Schl students wh have maintained a 3.5 G.P.A. in all their classes, and have earned a 3.75 G.P.A. in the preceding trimester. Awards will nt be given t students wh earn a D r F in a class. Students must be enrlled in fur A-F graded curses during the trimester they wish t receive the award. Teacher apprval is a part f the eligibility prcess. ASSESSMENT PRACTICES Mlalla High Schl is cntinually refining ur assessment practices t better measure and reprt n ur students abilities. Rather than students cncentrating n hw many pints they can earn, we are shifting the fcus f the students t what specific knwledge and skills have been mastered and what still needs t be learned. Teachers are clarifying what students shuld knw and be able t d in their classes. Teachers refer t the knwledge and skills t be learned as learning targets. We believe that nce students knw what is expected f them academically, they will have a better chance f hitting the target, and will be mre mtivated t d s. As the learning targets are explicitly defined in their classes, teachers can then assess the student s level f learning n each learning target. By assessing t each target, everyne invlved- student, teacher, and parent- get a much clearer picture f the student s strengths and weaknesses. All f the users f this infrmatin can either adjust their teaching (teacher), study habits (student), and supprt levels (teacher and parent) t help the student meet and exceed the target. Teachers transitining t this new mdel f assessment assessing t each learning target will likely be using a different scring methd. If the assessment measures mre than ne target at a time, the targets will be scred independently f each ther. Rather than students earning a percentage scre n an entire assessment and cllecting pints (70% r 70/100), students will earn a scre n a scale f 0-4, with 4 being the highest scre n each f the learning targets. Each level f the grading scale represents a prgressin f abilities, frm n ability r evidence f the learning target (0), t having an advanced understanding f the learning target. Example Scale 0 1 2 3 4 N Evidence Prficient Advanced Students are assessed multiple times n each learning target during the trimester, giving them several pprtunities t imprve their skills, and ultimately their grade, n each target. Teachers use a grade replacement methd that allws the student t replace an earlier lwer scre with the imprved scre. Typically, students may re-test n a learning target after the student has wrked and studied t better their understanding f that target. This methd f assessment and grade replacement allws a student t prgress in their learning and have their grade reflect that imprvement ver time. The final grade in the class will mre accurately cmmunicate actual learning t the learning targets. Teachers fully implementing this assessment system will still assign hmewrk and expect students t cmplete it. The difference will be that sme students might need mre practice than thers n specific learning targets. Fr example, if student A understands the target fully (say a 3 r 4 level n the grading scale) in class, there may nt be a need fr the student t cmplete an extensive hmewrk assignment n that target. This student can then fcus their effrts n ther classes and learning targets which they have yet t master. On the ther hand, Student B may have either struggled with the cncept r nly superficially understd the material in class, and therefre wuld need t cmplete an apprpriate amunt f hmewrk t becme prficient in the learning target. In curses using this assessment methd, hmewrk will still be reviewed during class, prviding feedback t the teacher and the student abut their ability level. The student will be expected t self-assess as well t help understand their need fr further instructin and/r practice. This exercise f self-assessment, alng with feedback frm the teacher, will direct the next stages f learning. Due t the varying amunt f practice/hmewrk a student needs, a grade fr the hmewrk will generally nt be issued. Even thugh the hmewrk will nt be fficially graded, students will receive the apprpriate feedback frm the teacher n their wrk, letting the student knw hw well they understd the learning target. Since the cmpletin f hmewrk will nt be included in a student s final curse grade, a student s grade will be based n the assessments f each f the learning targets. Students wh struggle with taking tests might at times wrk with the teacher t demnstrate their understanding in an alternate way.

Research and practice have shwn that students f all ability levels benefit frm this kind f fcus n the learning targets. This assessment mdel prvides clarity like never befre, helping students knw what is imprtant, where they are in the prcess f mastering the target, and hw t g abut becming prficient in the target- ultimately preventing r eliminating learning gaps in their educatin. We encurage yu t talk with classrm teachers if yu have further questins. 14 COURSE OFFERINGS Every curse ffered at Mlalla High Schl must meet several criteria in rder t be included in the master schedule. The criteria include student interest, minimum enrllment, teacher availability, a match t required cntent standards, and funding fr the curse. CREDIT RECOVERY/COURSE FAILURE All credit recvery ptins will be cnsidered n a case-by-case basis and must be pre-apprved by the student s cunselr. Students wh fail a curse may be rescheduled int the same curse depending upn availability. Students failing the same curse twice may be respnsible fr recvering that credit thrugh an alternative methd at the student s expense. Credit recvery plans and ptins shuld be made in partnership with the student s cunselr. Sme examples f prgrams include summer schl, crrespndence curses, E-schl. During the schl year, E-schl is ffered after schl at the cst f $75.00 t the student per curse taken fr credit recvery. E-schl is ffered n a space-available basis and ONLY fr credit recvery. Any ther csts assciated with a credit recvery prgram will be paid by the student. E-schl curses are transcript as pass fail and d nt meet cllege entrance requirements. DROPPING A CLASS Curse changes may nt be made after the trimester begins withut administrative apprval. Any student drpping a class after tw weeks will receive a failing grade fr the trimester. Any exceptins t this plicy must be cleared thrugh the instructr and with administrative apprval. Students drpping a class after 2 weeks will nt be assured f anther class r placement. The student and parents may be required t arrange t be ff-campus during the perid in which there is n placement prvided. Entering a class after the third week may result in a student receiving n credit fr the class. A Class Change Request frm, cmpleted with parent/guardian signature, is required t request class changes in mst cases. A cmpleted Class Change Request frm des nt guarantee a schedule change. If a student has frecasted fr the curse, that change request will nt be granted. EARLY GRADUATION A student wh wishes t graduate frm high schl in less time than the fur-year, grade 9-12 sequence, may request permissin t cmplete graduatin requirements n an altered schedule. GRADE POINT AVERAGE/WEIGHTED GRADES Students Grade Pint Average (GPA) will determine class rankings. The cumulative GPA is cmputed at the end f each trimester and is based n the trimester grades f all earned credit curse wrk beginning with the ninth grade. The ttal number f grade pints is divided by the ttal number credits earned. Each curse grade, ther than thse curses that are weighted, shall be based n a numerical system as fllws: A = 4 pints B = 3 pints C = 2 pints D = 1 pint F = 0 pints All students are encuraged t enrll and excel in the greatest number f rigrus curses pssible. It is recmmended that students cnfer with teachers, cunselrs, and parents as they plan their curse f study. Weighted Grades are assigned t classes that are deemed t be advanced. Class perids are 62 minutes in length..5 units f credit are earned fr successfully cmpleting a trimester class. Many curses are fr tw 12 week trimesters. Students earn 7.5 credits per year in a five-perid day trimester frmat. Credits are awarded in Carnegie Units. We encurage parents and guardians t take active rles in the frecasting prcess and t help their students select apprpriate classes fr the fllwing year. The Master Schedule and staffing decisins are greatly influenced by students curse selectins. Much time and effrt ges int prviding students with a cmplete schedule reflecting their requirements and their chices fr electives. Acceptable reasns fr schedule changes include placement at an incrrect level, placement in a previusly passed, nn-repeatable curse, missing a class perid, r being duble scheduled int bth sectins f a 2 trimester curse. Remember that limited resurces reduce ur capacity t meet every request fr change. Issues such as teacher preference, rder f classes during the day, r simply nt liking the class are nt acceptable reasns fr schedule changes. Submitting a class change request may nt result in a schedule change. TEACHER ASSISTANTS Junirs and senirs may request t serve as an assistant t ne teacher each trimester. T be cnsidered, students must meet the minimum criteria f a 3.0 GPA, have a 92% attendance rate, and have received n ut-f-schl suspensins during their tenure at Mlalla High Schl.
