i Introduction of the Strategic Plan Planning for the future is of paramount importance if we are to be successful in this ever-changing world. Yet, we rarely find time to reflect on our work or to strategize how we envision our work moving forward. During the third year of implementation of our 2014 17 strategic plan, the Division of Student Affairs embarked on a year-long journey to chart the course for our next five years of work. The Strategic Planning Committee engaged in scholarly reading on Student Affairs strategic planning processes and best practices. They held focus groups with Student Affairs colleagues and conducted Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats analysis as part of their structured planning method. Additionally, they reviewed past strategic plans, Student Affairs assessment data, and past annual reports. They reviewed data from the Campus Climate Factor Mapping document, the Living Document of demands from students, and data results from the National Survey of Student Engagement. Moreover, the planning committee held focus group meetings with students, faculty and staff throughout campus, as well as consortium partners, to garner feedback on our division-wide planning process. Draft versions were submitted on a regular basis at Student Affairs all-staff meetings, and the entire division provided additional feedback. Finally, a division-wide vote saw the final approval of this living document. As we move forward, we are ever mindful of our passion for student engagement and success. I look forward to the journey ahead and watching this plan unfold. Thank you to the hard-working members of the Strategic Planning Committee. 2 Pitzer s Educational Objectives (PEO) As a liberal arts college with a strong interdisciplinary curriculum in the social and behavioral sciences, Pitzer presents a unique opportunity for self-exploration and for exploration of the world. The College expects students to take an active part in planning their course of study, to bring a spirit of inquiry and adventure to planning that course of study, and to work hard to meet the intellectual goals of a Pitzer education. To guide students and their advisers, the College has six educational objectives. 4 Organizational Structure Residence Life & Summer Programs The mission of Residence Life is to cultivate a safe and inclusive living environment where students, staff, and faculty continue to learn and interact through a variety of innovative programs, practices and services. The mission of Summer Programs is to welcome a variety of camps, conferences and educational groups to Pitzer College by coordinating agreements, classrooms, residence hall rooms, meals and other on-campus amenities. 8 1. Create ongoing individual and communal learning in the areas of social and intercultural awareness to work toward a just society. DESCRIPTION The Pitzer community values inclusivity and challenges itself to engage in ongoing self-assessment and communal learning in the areas of power, privilege, access and inclusion. Students, staff and faculty benefit from opportunities to learn on campus and in our greater local and global communities. We strive together for a community where all voices are heard, all persons are treated equitably, and systemic barriers are removed. Beginning with personal identity work and then investing in efforts on campus, we are engaged and ethical participants in creating a just society. This objective aligns with the Pitzer Educational Objective of Intercultural Understanding and Social Justice, Responsibility and the Ethical Implications of Knowledge and Action. Through learning about our own cultural lenses and using that knowledge to contribute to socially just practices, we will be supporting these two educational objectives. OUTCOMES Upon completion of this objective, members of the Pitzer community will be able to: Detail social identities of privilege and connected implicit biases. Comprehend issues and events from cultural lenses beyond one s own. Identify points of action and employ effective strategies that contribute to individual, communal and social growth. 2. Cultivate and demonstrate a shared commitment to constructive dialogue in order to further understanding and work towards conflict resolution. DESCRIPTION The Pitzer community brings together students, faculty, staff and other constituents in a residential environment that should both challenge and support students as they critically examine their own ideologies. We all have the responsibility to listen and the right to be heard. We will all actively engage in respectful dialogue across commonalities and differences while giving the respect that we also wish to receive. Civility and discourse will be hallmarks of the Pitzer experience. This objective aligns with the Pitzer Educational Objectives of both Critical Thinking, Quantitative Reasoning, and Effective Expression and Intercultural Understanding. Community members will consider how culture, power, and history intersect when engaging in active dialogue. OUTCOMES Upon completion of this objective, members of the Pitzer community will be able to: Demonstrate the core skills of active listening. Identify the impact that personal actions have on others. Identify shared needs when working across difference.

DESCRIPTION It is the shared responsibility of all Pitzer community members to work towards equity and inclusion, not only those who are burdened by systematic oppression. Student Affairs staff will actively engage with students, identity-based clubs and organizations, institutional offices, and other campus resources to foster a community where marginalized students are valued and supported. This objective aligns with the Pitzer Educational Objectives of Intercultural Understanding as well as Social Justice, Social Responsibility and the Ethical Implications of Knowledge and Action. Alignment with these objectives means that Student Affairs staff will gain culturally relevant understanding to advocate for and engage with marginalized students. OUTCOMES Upon completion of this objective, members of the Pitzer community will be able to: Describe existing resources and ways to access them. Engage in personal reflection and articulate the impact of the Pitzer experience on personal growth Contribute to the improvement of the campus experience. 4. Establish and sustain a campus culture of holistic wellness to promote ongoing success. DESCRIPTION Student Affairs staff will establish a campus culture of sustained success by advancing a comprehensive vision of wellness that includes mental, physical, emotional, social, individual, and community wellness. These efforts begin with the individual and are the shared responsibility of the whole community. Student Affairs staff members will create strategic wellness initiatives that promote holistic wellness education, assist in substance misuse and violence prevention efforts, and develop a culture of resilience. We will base these initiatives in evidence-informed practices and will engage in ongoing assessment efforts to guide us towards the stated objectives. This objective aligns with the Pitzer Educational Objective of Interdisciplinary Perspective since holistic wellness entails working across many areas of the College and requires a complete understanding of the phenomena as a whole in order to achieve success. OUTCOMES Upon completion of this objective, members of the Pitzer community will be able to: Define personal goals for holistic wellness. Identify individualized practices that mitigate barriers and contribute to success. Demonstrate a commitment to physical health through Varsity Athletics, Club Sports, and other recreational activities. Implement proactive strategies that form the foundations of a healthy community.

10 5. Build community awareness of the role and impact of Student Affairs. DESCRIPTION Student Affairs will inform students and other campus constituents about resources and opportunities, while seeking feedback on our current practices. Student Affairs will communicate our efforts to the broader campus community and celebrate our contributions to student success. Engaging in ongoing assessment will ensure we keep the student experience at the center of our work. This objective aligns with the Pitzer Educational Objective of Critical Thinking, Quantitative Reasoning, and Effective Expression since we are engaging in various methods of research and assessment to make evidence-informed decisions that effectively serve the community. OUTCOMES Upon completion of this objective, members of the Pitzer community will be able to: Identify and utilize Student Affairs resources. Access the opportunities for campus student engagement and leadership. Provide constructive feedback about the campus life experience. 6. Invest in the development of Student Affairs staff members by fostering a culture of inquiry, assessment, research, learning and innovation. DESCRIPTION The field of Student Affairs adjusts and advances as rapidly as our changing student body. Regular, ongoing professional development opportunities are essential to provide Student Affairs staff members a foundation upon which they can thrive and best serve the community. We will ground these learning opportunities in the Division s values while emphasizing ongoing assessment, innovation and vision. This objective aligns with the Pitzer Educational Objectives of Breadth of Knowledge and Understanding in Depth since both generalist and specialist skill sets are equally important in order to achieve a culture of ongoing assessment and renewal within the division. OUTCOMES Upon completion of this objective, Student Affairs staff members will be able to: Develop individual professional goals in congruence with divisional objectives and needs. Integrate innovative and evidence-informed practices into their work. Engage in regular, ongoing assessment.

12 Implementation Plan Each area of Student Affairs will contribute to conversations about how their area can work towards the Strategic Plan objectives. The Student Affairs website will have an ongoing list of these action plans and progress towards these objectives will be updated regularly. The Student Affairs Strategic Planning Committee is committed to facilitating meaningful progress on each of our strategic objectives. The committee will take the following steps to fulfill this commitment: The Strategic Planning Committee will collaborate with the Assessment Team to create a progress report tool to aid each area s planning efforts. The OSA Assessment Team will continue the Strategic Planning Committee s efforts by meeting regularly to communicate achievements, engage in cross-divisional collaboration and report progress to the community. All members of OSA will regularly re-visit progress on the strategic plan within department and divisional meetings. The OSA Assessment Team will report on the implementation of the strategic plan inside the OSA Annual Report.
