NSF Mathematics & Science Partnership: UCI FOCUS! presents UCI TEACH Math & Science 2010 UC Irvine Teacher Education Academy for Community College Scholars - Math & Science JULY 8-11, 2010 (Check-in at 7:30am on July 8 th ; program concludes at 12 noon on July 11 th ) What is UCI TEACH Math & Science? The University of California, Irvine Teacher Education Academy for Community College Scholars - Math & Science (UCI TEACH Math & Science) is a 4-day summer residential program for California community college students interested in middle and high school math/science teaching careers. UCI TEACH Math & Science seeks to develop and promote a community of scholars who will engage in research and best teaching practices in order to become excellent, innovative classroom teachers, as well as empowered leaders in education. With funding from the National Science Foundation Mathematics & Science Partnership: UCI FOCUS! Project, this year s session will be dedicated to the exploration of math and science education at the secondary levels. This year s program is offered to future math and science teachers from the following majors: math, chemistry, physics, earth science, biology, information and computer science, engineering and related fields. * The UCI FOCUS! Project is pleased to cover the cost of room, board, and program materials for those invited to participate. Each selected participant will be required to submit a fully refundable $25 deposit check, which will be returned at the conclusion of the program. Transportation and parking costs ($8/day, subject to increase) are the responsibility of each participant. What are the benefits of attending UCI TEACH Math & Science? Priority will be given to current community college students with a UC Transferable GPA of 2.5 or higher, and those who are admitted to transfer to UCI for Fall 2010. Students not meeting these criteria will be considered if space permits. UCI TEACH MATH & SCIENCE - PARTICIPANT AGREEMENT Participants must carefully read and fully agree to the terms and conditions outlined in this document in order to participate in UCI TEACH Math & Science. 1. Participants will be expected to show proper respect and consideration to all faculty, staff, and peers throughout the program. Dorm life is more agreeable when you are considerate of other participants and staff. 2. UCI TEACH Math & Science is a residential program; as such, students must reside on campus. Participants will not leave the University of California, Irvine campus during UCI TEACH Math & Science, except for program related field trips. 3. Participants agree to have no outside visitors at UC Irvine during UCI TEACH Math & Science except on designated visiting day(s), if applicable. 4. Participants will be responsible to attend and be on time to all classes, special lectures and academic field trips. Special circumstances such as family commitments, emergencies, or illness will require the participant to notify the UCI TEACH Math & Science Director. 5. Participants will complete all homework assigned by faculty or teaching assistants, if applicable. 6. Participants must abide by the hall/dorm lounge retirement schedule at the conclusion of each day. 7. The use of inappropriate or offensive language will not be tolerated. 8. Possession of any type of weapon will lead to reprimand and/or dismissal. Weapons include knives, guns, pellet guns, BB guns, sling shots, water pistols, or any other kind of device that could inflict injury to yourself or others. Toy replicas are not permitted. 9. Violence and abuse of any type, including physical, sexual, or verbal abuse of others, and any form of conduct which may cause another individual harm (or potential harm), or feelings of discomfort will lead to reprimand or dismissal. 10. Consumption or possession of alcoholic beverages and/or illegal drugs of any kind will lead to automatic dismissal from UCI TEACH Math & Science. 11. Participants of the opposite sex will not be permitted in any participant s room. 12. Tampering with any fire equipment is a misdemeanor subject to a $1,000 fine or one year in prison. 13. UCI TEACH Math & Science staff will have permission to enter any participant s room for unannounced room checks. 14. Participants who abuse or damage University property will be billed for the cost of replacement or repair. 15. Participants will abide by the UCI TEACH Math & Science dress code. 16. UCI TEACH Math & Science is not responsible for damaged and/or loss of personal items including but not limited to personal electronic equipment such as personal computers, and peripherals, walkman/discman, and/or cellular phones. Acknowledgement of Understanding: I have read this waiver of liability, assumption of risk, and indemnity agreement, fully understand its terms, and understand that I am giving up substantial rights, including my right to sue.
