Waitaki Boys High School FROM THE RECTOR Greetings all As we approach the middle of Term 2 it has been a relatively quiet time regards major events on the school calendar. This has enabled staff and students to really focus on our core business which is teaching and learning. Last week we recognised anti-bullying week, culminating with a mufti-day on Friday where boys were encouraged to wear pink shirts/clothing in recognition of the anti-bullying cause. The mufti day raised over $600 and these funds are going towards Oamaru Youth line who do a great job in raising awareness and dealing with mental health. Here at WBHS we have a zero tolerance policy towards bullying and at the Rector s assembly last Wednesday we discussed our aim to become a safe telling culture which encourages all students to report bullying, whether they are the target, the initiator or the bystander. A safe telling culture reassures students they have done the right thing whenever they report bullying. Sadly, we are dealing with a number of issues regarding commitment at the moment particularly in regards to playing or showing up for sports teams. If you son is in an extra-curricular group or team could you please ensure that he gets to practices and competitions. If your son has made a commitment to participate then the right thing to do is honour that commitment. We have many volunteer coaches/helpers who put in untold hours providing opportunities for our boys and we need to give them all the support they deserve. Thanks for your support with this. Newsletter 25th May 2018 on the 7/8th June. It is a wonderful occasion and the boys who participate have a great time. I understand numbers have been very low at current rehearsals. There are a great deal of positive life-lessons that can be gained by getting out of your comfort zone. So come on boys Give it a go! Yesterday we entertained all the students from Oamaru Intermediate School as they took part in our Agricultural Field Day on the Fraser Farm. Thanks must go to Ms Prentice for organising an awesome day along with numerous supporters of the school who put on rural displays which the students thoroughly enjoyed. As we now swing into the marketing season it would be pertinent to signal that our Open Night this year is on Monday August 6th (see last page of newsletter). Your positive feedback is our best marketing, so please if you know of any families with boys in Year 8 or even younger encourage them to come along and have a look at the amazing opportunities available at Waitaki Boy s. Have a great weekend and also enjoy the upcoming long weekend that is Queen s Birthday. Ma ponga ma whero ka oti - By black and red together it s done.
