September 9, 2015 Dear 5 th Graders, Parents, and Families, It is with great excitement that we officially welcome you to 5 th grade! Our names are Tara McHugh and Christina Johnson, and we will be your child s teacher and paraprofessional this coming school year. We believe our role as teacher and paraprofessional is to help guide and facilitate your child s learning. We look forward to working with you and your child during their final year at PS 261! We hope that you had a relaxing and enjoyable summer. This packet contains a lot of important information. Please read through the classroom policies and fill out the attached sheets. We are looking forward to working with you this school year and please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Enclosed in this packet: Class 5-412 Policies Photo Release/ Walking Trip Form Family Information/ Emergency Contact/ Parent Survey Dismissal Information Please fill out the attached pages and return it to me by Monday, September 14, 2015. Sincerely, Ms. Tara and Ms. Johnson Contact Information: Teacher: Tara McHugh Paraprofessional: Christina Johnson Class: 5-412 Email: ps261class412@gmail.com Class Website: http://class412ps261.weebly.com/ School Phone Number: 718-330-9275

Class 5-412 Policies Communication: The best way to communicate with me is through email. My email is http://class412ps261.weebly.com/. I will do our best to respond to your email within 48 hours. You can also write me a note if that is easier! Please view our class website frequently for the most updated information. Arrival and Dismissal: Your child is expected to be outside at lineup or in the auditorium, ready to go upstairs by 8:20 a.m. sharp. If your child arrives after 8:20 they will be marked late. We will begin instruction immediately at 8:20, so please understand that it is very disruptive if children come in late. Your child will be dismissed outside at 2:40 p.m. daily. Before your child is dismissed please make sure they have said goodbye to us for the day. Be sure to specify who may pick up your child on the attached information sheet. Homework: Homework will be assigned daily from Monday through Friday. Homework will not exceed an hour a night (if it takes your child significantly longer, please let us know). Homework is a reinforcement of the learning your child is completing in school. If there is an extenuating circumstance that their homework cannot be completed, please write us a note explaining the situation so your child will not be held accountable. I expect students to make their best effort when completing their homework and to do it independently. As part of the homework assignment every night students will read for thirty minutes and respond to their reading. Numerous studies have shown that students become better readers from reading, so please make sure they read at home every night! Snack: As 5 th graders we eat lunch at 12:00 everyday. It is difficult to concentrate and work productively when you are hungry, so please send your child in with a snack to be eaten mid morning. I call this a working snack which means it is eaten during independent work time. Therefore it should be something easy to consume and healthy. Some suggestions are Fruit, Granola bars, Pretzels, etc. *Please do not send your child with a snack that needs utensils, refrigerating, or warming!

Classroom Supplies If you haven t heard, the fifth grade had all of their supplies funded and paid for by Donors Choose. Thank you to all of those families who donated money last spring. This process made it easier to get uniformed supplies and helped save time and money for back to school shopping. There are a few more individual supplies we are asking for! 1 FUN Spiral Notebook. The notebook can be any type of notebook except for a black and white marble notebook. This will be used as a Homework Notebook. Pencil case and hand held pencil sharpener (Feel free to add a pack of colored pens to your pencil case to make your writer s notebook fun!) 1 plastic sturdy folder with your child s name and Homework Folder written on it. We are also asking for an additional $20 per child to be used for magazine subscriptions and interactive fun learning game website site called Sumdog. Each student will have a subscription to the website and be able to work on specific math skills and grammar/spelling skills personalized to his or her needs. We are in the process of ordering Odyssey, Faces, Time for Kids, Sports Illustrated for Kids, and National Geographic Explorer. Some of these magazines will stay in the classroom and others will go home with your child. We do not need any other supplies besides the list above. Local organizations and families paid for everything else online. If you have any questions about supplies please do not hesitate to contact us. Sincerely, Ms. Tara and Ms. Johnson * We do have a wish list on our class website, http://class412ps261.weebly.com/. As the year moves along we will add items to our wish list that we think will enhance the learning in our class community.
