. EXHIBITION AND SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING CONFERENCES ANNUAL CONFERENCE FOR TEACHERS OF ENGLISH YANGON, LOWER MYANMAR 24-25 SEPTEMBER 2016 MANDALAY, UPPER MYANMAR JANUARY 2017 www.britishcouncil.org.mm 1

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The British Council is the UK s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations. We are on the ground in six continents and over 100 countries, bringing international opportunity to life, and every day. The British Council promotes a friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and people worldwide, making a positive contribution to all the countries we work with and, in doing so, making a lasting difference to the UK's security, prosperity and influence. In Myanmar, we have a proven relationship with Ministry of Education and a Memorandum of Understanding under which we support the development of Education in Myanmar. As part of our work in English for Education Systems, we support the Ministry of Education and other ministries which have a role in the Myanmar education sector, as well as other educational organisations working to support education reform. English for Education Systems programmes focus mainly on upgrading the teaching and learning of English. We reach out to both private and public English sectors by holding annual conferences, training English language teachers, training teacher educators sharing teaching and training materials, and offering consultancy services. We have held English Language Teaching conferences in Yangon for 16 years and in Mandalay for 5 years. The main objective of these annual conferences is to support the teaching and learning of English in Myanmar by bringing together professionals connected to the field to participate in professional workshops, discussion and professional networking. These interactive conferences create a space for all English language teachers, teacher trainers and curriculum developers from Myanmar, the region and beyond to share ideas and best practice. Our presenters come from all over the world with keynote speakers being renowned ELT specialists. As such, the conferences create opportunities for educators continual professional development as well as educational policy development, key objectives in Myanmar s national reform process. The 2015 Yangon conference attracted 500 participants with over 60 presenters, while Mandalay had 200 participants and 40 presenters. Our conferences are two-day events attracting policy makers, education stakeholders and teachers from both public and private sectors, especially from ELT institutions. 2016 is set to be our most successful year yet, with more speakers than ever before from around the world. It was a unique event in Myanmar. I could contribute more than 40 years of my experience as a teacher, township education officer and director of Basic Education to the improvement of English Language Teaching in Myanmar. I also learned a lot from presenters and workshop facilitators from all over the world. Last but not least, I could network with the real practitioners in Myanmar, teachers from both private and public sector, to learn their daily challenges, how they tackle them and what they value. In the end I could dare say that this conference is a rare development opportunity which they would never miss! U Tin Hlaing, Retired Director or Basic Education, Ministry of Education, Myanmar 2

REACH AND IMPACT 2016 September: 17th Annual Conference for Teachers of English in Yangon 2017 January: 6th Annual Conference for Teachers of English in Mandalay Speakers: 76 (Keynote, Panel Discussions, Interactive Presentations) Countries: 8 (Dubai, Vietnam, Singapore, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Korea, Hong Kong, China) Total Audience: Covered by 18 media sources including 4 TV stations 6.4 million opportunities to view Total Attendees: 700 (International/ Private School Expat/ Local Teachers, Freelance Teachers, University Teachers) CONFERENCE THEME This year s theme is: English and Opportunities. The conference aims to explore the opportunities English brings and how to enhance those opportunities through curriculum development and quality teaching of English. We have identified three different strands: 1. English methodology in the classroom 2. English curriculum development 3. English for employability The first strand is designed to explore how English is taught in various contexts. The participants will experience different interactive teaching styles from the region and around the world. Over 50 workshops will give participants the opportunity to develop their skills, broaden their knowledge and engage with those teaching in contexts very different from their own. The second strand focuses on the challenges of developing an appropriate English curriculum. Central to the strand is the need to consider learning needs in order to design suitable learning outcomes and assessment methods, The scope of discussion could include communicative learning objectives, learning to learn, Content Integrated Language Teaching (CLIL) English as the medium of instruction (EMI) and approaches to assessing language learning. The third strand will look at how learning English in diverse sectors of education, such as formal, informal, technical and vocational and alternative education, enhances learners employability and opportunities to reach their potential. The workshops hope to capture the skills gaps facing school leavers and graduates and provide remedies. We are also aware that technology plays an important role in contexts where its use is appropriate and possible. Therefore, some sessions can focus on how to best to integrate it into modern teaching contexts to enhance learning and develop digital literacy The conference s presentations and workshops under the theme English and Opportunities aim to contribute practical and context-appropriate strategies to support Myanmar educators, with a focus on methodology, curriculum development and 3 Exhibition and Sponsorship Opportunities The British Council

English as a skill for employability. In all, these strands will inform Myanmar s strategic decision-makers as well as teachers practice. Diverse policies in language teaching across the world recognise the need for teachers to be involved in the decision-making process, our panel sessions will explore the role teachers can play in shaping the future with specific reference to Myanmar teachers in the current education scenario. We hope that by attending this conference, educational professionals will be better able to explore new ways of overcoming the challenges of teaching, learning and managing education in their own contexts, and by sharing their own experiences, support the development of English teaching in Myanmar, the betterment of education overall and learners employability prospects. 'I have attended this conference yearly since 2011 under the British Council's kind invitations to state education, monastic education and non governmental organizations. The conference enriches us not just with knowledge on ELT matters but also on wider themes in education such as how to prepare our students for the 21st century. I represent Monastic sector. I coordinates main programmes in monastic education in Myanmar and I do acknowledge that the conference is crucial in widening my knowledge about other sectors, strengthening my links with them and in building relationships.' U Aung Ko Oo (Monastic Education Development Group) 4 Exhibition and Sponsorship Opportunities The British Council
