university of tasmania OPEN TO TALENT: STRATEGIC SNAPSHOT 2012 ONWARDS

open to talent

At their heart universities are about people: what they can become, what they can create and how they can inspire. Open to Talent As the only university based in Tasmania, UTAS has a unique and distinctive position, nationally and internationally. The closeness of our relationship with Tasmania defines us as an institution, our strength and character generated by the interplay between serving our community and being the best university we can be. We are a fine university, part of an established and esteemed collective of institutions spanning the world, and strategically global in all that we do. Our Statement of Values asserts that [w] e work in a unique setting and actively partner with the communities in which we live, in support of a healthy, civil and sustainable society. At the same time, we are outwardly focused and part of a global community, engaging with the rest of Australia and the world. This encapsulates our distinctive opportunity and informs the future articulated by Open to Talent. We will create this future by focusing on three key priorities: Research: creating new ideas and new knowledge; contributing to future prosperity via innovative approaches to the issues impacting our society and environment. Students: sharing our knowledge and the world of ideas, understanding lessons from the past and building opportunity and capability for the future. Community: drawing on our rich local resources to work with local, national, international and global communities, acting as a catalyst for change, demonstrating leadership and serving the public good. These priorities are informed by our belief that universities are about people: what they can become, what they can create and how they can inspire. Open to Talent, the motto UTAS adopted 75 years ago, remains a fitting description of our intent. Ingeniis Patuit Campus or the field is open to talent 3 www.utas.edu.au CRICOS Provider Code: 00586B

Students We will: S1. Expand and diversify our student cohort by providing Tasmanians with greater access to higher education and increasing our attractiveness to national and international markets. S2. Seek a more balanced distribution of students across our campuses. S3. Develop a renewed curriculum that incorporates greater intellectual breadth and provides graduates with the skills required for participation in the national and international workforce. S4. Form partnerships to expand our offerings in areas where we may be constrained, including pathways with schools and the VET sector and articulation arrangements with universities. S.5 Provide a distinctive, memorable and rewarding UTAS student experience. Community We will: C1. Engage with the economic, social, cultural and intellectual life of Tasmania and extend this engagement into national and international networks. C2. Use our relationship with Tasmania to inform research questions, test research solutions at systemic scale, and translate research models into solutions for modern society. C3. Enhance our education programs by engaging with Tasmania s society and environment, fostering skills that extend the curriculum and provide real world experiences for our students. C4. Attract scholars and thought leaders from around the world to UTAS and support our staff and students to spend time at other institutions. C5. Engage with the economic, social, cultural and intellectual life in Tasmania. Our Priorities Supporting and Enabling Open to Talent Realisation of our ambitions will depend on authentic, sustained and focused engagement with the Open to Talent vision and the judicious alignment of our people, infrastructure, resources and processes. We will: E1. Build rewarding careers and a healthy and engaged workforce and culture, positioning UTAS as an employer of choice. E2. Commit to campuses located in the South, North and North-West of Tasmania, supporting regional communities through access to world class education, research and infrastructure. E3. Be guided by a vision of sustainability that seeks to reduce environmental impacts, achieve economic efficiency, demonstrate social responsibility and enhance student experience. E4. Provide access to infrastructure of an international standing through strategic local investment and partnerships with external organisations. E5. Balance the provision of traditional library resources with our commitment to high quality collections and the development of eresearch capabilities. E6. Implement an operating model aligned with, and which serves, our aspirations. E7. Implement a budget model aligned with, and which serves, our aspirations. E8. Strengthen our income stream from government, fees, research grants and philanthropy. E9. Build the University s profile and brand, nationally and internationally. E10. Implement an institution-wide cycle of planning and performance evaluation, articulating the Open to Talent vision. 5 www.utas.edu.au CRICOS Provider Code: 00586B
