Unit Assignments Unit I Reflection Paper In your textbook, you read about Sir Robert Peel, credited for being the founder of modern policing. Your assignment is to review Peel s Nine Principles and reflect on how each of them has affected the way police officers handle their jobs today. Do you believe that police officers today still uphold those principles? Please explain why you feel this way. In addition, reflect on the changes that have occurred in policing throughout the past 60 years in the United States. Also, include information regarding the roles of English policing, expansion, and development and how they contributed to American policing. Your reflection paper should consist of at least three pages. Please view the following video that discusses Peel s legacy; it may help as work on your reflection paper: http://www.pearsoncustom.com/mct-enterprise/asset.php?isbn=1256689785&id=15398 Unit III PowerPoint Presentation For this assignment, you will be asked to put yourself in the role of trainer for your police department. You have been asked to provide a PowerPoint presentation to new employees in which you discuss the role of police, police discretion, and ethics. Seeing that these employees are new to your department, you want to be sure to convey clear and concise information at the initial orientation for employment. In order to prepare for this assignment, you will need to review Chapter 5, The Police Role and Police Discretion, and Chapter 8, Police Ethics and Police Deviance, in your textbook. For this assignment, you will prepare a three-part PowerPoint presentation. The assignment requires a minimum of 10 slides, not including a title slide and reference slide. You must reference a minimum of one additional source in addition to the textbook. Part I consists of a discussion about the role of police in society. The assignment requires the discussion of the role of police and the two major views of policing. Also in this section, be sure to discuss the goals that should be addressed through policing and the methods used to achieve these goals through police duties. Part II consists of a discussion of police discretion, which is a major challenge that U.S. police face in today s society. You will need to discuss what police discretion is, how police discretion is exercised, and why this discretion is exercised. Part III consists of defining and describing ethics as they relate to policing. BCJ 2001, Theory and Practices of Law Enforcement 2
Unit IV Article Critique Using the CSU Online Library, please locate an article regarding entrapment. Your article should be no more than five years old and should come from a professional or scholarly journal. After reading the article and briefly summarizing the purpose for the study, address the following questions: What the main point of the article? Who is the intended audience? Do the arguments offered by the author(s) support the article s main point? What evidence supports the main point? What is your opinion of the article? Do you agree with the article s findings? What evidence, either from the textbook or additional sources, supports your opinion? Your paper should be a minimum of three pages in length, not counting the title page and references. Use APA format for your paper, including all references and in-text citations. Unit V Case Study In order to prepare for this case study, you will need to review Chapter 13, Police and the Law, in your textbook. In your case study, you will address the following: Analyze and explain the use of the exclusionary rule by the Supreme Court of the United States. Define how the exclusionary rule has affected the use of evidence acquired from police search and seizure cases. Compare and contrast each of the following cases and the effects that the ruling decision by the Supreme Court has had on evidence obtained from police search and seizure. What constitutes a reasonable search (include information regarding the ways that the police can use probable cause and execute a search warrant)? How is search and seizure governed by the Fourth Amendment? How do you feel that the police could have completed their searches in these cases more efficiently? Base your case study on the following three cases: Weeks v. United States (1914) Exclusionary rule applied to federal law enforcement agencies Rochin v. California (1952) Exclusionary rule applied to all cases involving extreme police misconduct Mapp v. Ohio (1961) Exclusionary rule applied to all law enforcement agencies (local, state, and federal) The completed assignment must be a minimum of five pages in length, not including the title page and references pages. Community policing and problem-solving policing has become an integral element of policing in the 21st century. In order to prepare for this assignment, you will need to review Chapter 12, Community Policing: The Debate Continues, in your textbook. Taking into consideration what you have learned regarding community policing and problem-solving policing, you will write a paper reflecting what community policing and problem-solving policing entails and explain any benefits and drawbacks of using these strategies. Your essay must be at least three pages in length. Unit VIII Reflection Paper In this reflection paper, discuss the differences and similarities between the four theories of punishment. Then, discuss how educational programs within prisons can function as rehabilitation for inmates. Be sure to include the constraints of establishing these education programs as well as the components and benefits involved in developing and implementing these programs. Your reflection paper should be at least three pages in length. APA Guidelines The application of the APA writing style shall be practical, functional, and appropriate to each academic level, with the primary purpose being the documentation (citation) of sources. CSU requires that students use APA style for certain papers and projects. Students should always carefully read and follow assignment directions and review the associated grading rubric when available. Students can find CSU s Citation Guide by clicking here. This document includes examples and sample papers and provides information on how to contact the CSU Success Center. Grading Rubrics This course utilizes analytic grading rubrics as tools for your professor in assigning grades for all learning activities. Each rubric serves as a guide that communicates the expectations of the learning activity and describes the criteria for each level of achievement. In addition, a rubric is a reference tool that lists evaluation criteria and can help you organize your efforts to meet the requirements of that learning activity. It is imperative for you to familiarize yourself with these rubrics because these are the primary tools your professor uses for assessing learning activities. Rubric categories include: (1) Discussion Board, (2) Assessment (Written Response), and (3) Assignment. However, it is possible that not all of the listed rubric types will be used in a single course (e.g., some courses may not have Assessments). The Discussion Board rubric can be found within Unit I s Discussion Board submission instructions. The Assessment (Written Response) rubric can be found embedded in a link within the directions for each Unit Assessment. However, these rubrics will only be used when written-response questions appear within the Assessment. Each Assignment type (e.g., article critique, case study, research paper) will have its own rubric. The Assignment rubrics are built into Blackboard, allowing students to review them prior to beginning the Assignment and again once the Assignment has been scored. This rubric can be accessed via the Assignment link located within the unit where it is to be submitted. Students may also access the rubric through the course menu by selecting Tools and then My Grades. Again, it is vitally important for you to become familiar with these rubrics because their application to your Discussion Boards, Assessments, and Assignments is the method by which your instructor assigns all grades.
