LADIES, WELCOME TO HOUSTON! Although no organized activities will be offered to wives attending the 2015 National Narrow Gauge Convention, we have put together a list of suggested activities. We will also have a ride sharing message board so that groups of wives can get together to visit some of the things to see and do in Houston. We have listed just a couple of ideas to start with and will be adding more as time gets closer to the Convention. First off, there is always shopping: The Galleria (5085 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77056-5673) Spanning 2.4 million square feet of space, housing 400 fine stores and restaurants, two high-rise hotels, and three office towers, The Galleria is Houston s most popular retail and tourist destination, meeting every style and taste. A plethora of amenities, including a full-size ice rink for recreational and figure skating, a state of the art children s play area, two swimming pools, a video arcade, three full-service national and international banks, two tailor shops, 12 beauty salons, and a post office, continually serve a wide range of shopper delights. A.7 mile, 15 minute, walk from the hotel or a $ 5 cab ride (we can share cabs and cut the price). Post Oak Plaza (1800 Post Oak, Houston, TX 77056-5673) Truly eclectic, Uptown offers its visitors sophisticated international cuisine amid high fashion. A wide variety of cafes, wine bars and premier restaurants highlight an exciting neighborhood where the world comes together for a taste of the best in fashion, food and fun. A.4 mile, 7 minute, walk from the hotel or a $ 6 cab ride. Then there are the museums: Houston Museum of Natural History (5555 Hermann Park Drive, Houston Texas 77030-1799) As one of the most heavily attended museums in the United States, and one of the most attended venues in Houston, the Museum houses the Burke Baker Planetarium, Wortham GIANT Screen Theatre, Cockrell Butterfly Center and a fascinating variety of permanent exhibit areas that examine astronomy, space science, Native American culture, paleontology, energy, chemistry, gems and minerals, seashells, Texas wildlife and much more. In addition, the museum frequently presents traveling exhibitions on a variety of topics. A 6.5 miles, (walking is not an option) from the hotel or a $ 16 cab ride each way. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet, Houston, Texas 77005 Located in the heart of Houston's Museum District, the MFAH is a dynamic cultural complex comprising two gallery buildings, a sculpture garden, visitors center, library, movie theater, gift shop, café, two art schools, and two house museums. A 6.2 miles, (walking is not an option) from the hotel or a $ 16 cab ride each way. These two museums are within easy walking distance of each other..just a tad over a mile. So, if you go to the Museum of Fine Arts on Thursday morning (it is free all day Thursday) then walk over to the Museum of Natural Science after lunch (it is free from 2pm-5pm on Thursdays), you will be in for an interesting and not very expensive day!

THE GALLERIA 5085 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77056-5673 More than 26 million visitors each year seek the dynamic & fine shopping environment uniquely offered by The Galleria, Texas largest shopping center and fourth largest domain nationally. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston 1001 Bissonnet, Houston, Texas 77005 Welcome to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. I hope you find mfah.org an inspiring guide to the wonderful experiences in store for you here at the Museum, and I am delighted to invite you to explore all of the exceptional exhibitions and installations on view. Gaze in wonder at brilliant paintings and monumental tapestries by Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens in an unparalleled exhibition. Spectacular Rubens reunites the panel paintings he created for the Triumph of the Eucharist series with four of the original tapestries. We are also pleased to share masterworks of art from the Islamic world through our partnership with Kuwait s renowned al-sabah Collection. To complement the expanded installation now on view, two dedicated galleries feature objects from the Museum s own growing Arts of the Islamic World collection. Another collaboration the annual Eye on Houston exhibition offers a unique look at the diversity of our city through photographs by students from local high schools. Works from the MFAH collections fill the galleries year-round with art embracing every era of history across the globe. Fangs, Feathers, and Fins brings together examples of sacred animals from the Pre-Columbian collection, and important additions to the Museum's silver holdings are on view in Silver: An American Art. Our series highlighting Modern and Contemporary Art features major paintings and sculptures that span the early 1900s to the present, and Line: Making the Mark considers the historic 20th-century shift marking artists' use of line as its own definitive subject. Take advantage of the ever-changing calendar of events brimming with activities for all ages throughout the Museum, including the Glassell School of Art and our two house museums: Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens and Rienzi. We offer a number of ways to enjoy the Museum for free. For example, the Lunch + Look program provides free same-day general admission on weekdays from noon to 2 p.m. with your receipt from the on-site food truck or Cafe Express. Museum members receive free general admission every day, and Family-level memberships include the children in the household. Children 12 and younger are always admitted free, and on weekends all children receive free general admission when they show their card from any Texas public library. General admission is free for everyone on Thursdays, courtesy of Shell. For me, the Museum is a place of wonder and enlightenment, as I hope it is for you. Please visit often, and say hello when you see me in the galleries.
