Mathematical Applications for Business Mathematics 2355 Fall 2016 Course Materials: Software (required): MyMathLab (includes access to the e-book). If you have an old access code that you have used in the past with this edition of the book and it is not older than one year, you can still use it. You will enroll in MyMathLab using an access code (access code can be purchased from the university bookstore) through the shell in WyoCourses. Details on how to enroll for MyMathLab will be posted on the course website on WyoCourses. For best results, purchase your access code NOW and start working on your homework from the first day of class. Internet access (required): You will need it to use the MyMathLab software to finish your online homework. Physical textbook (optional): We will use the textbook College Mathematics for Business, Economics, Life Sciences, and Social Sciences by Barnett, Ziegler, and Byleen 13th Edition. If you buy your access code from the university bookstore, you can get the physical copy of the book at a lower cost if you purchase them as a bundle. Calculator (required): A scientific non-graphing calculator. During exams and quizzes, you will not be allowed to use a graphing calculator or a cell phone and you will not be allowed to share a calculator with someone else. Note Card (optional): For each exam you will be allowed to use both sides of one 3 x5 index card for handwritten notes. Includes linear programming, mathematics of finance, probability and statistics. A computer lab using spreadsheet software will meet one day per week. Exams 70% Exams 1-3 will be given during the regularly scheduled class time (9:00-9:50 am) on the dates shown below. Exam 4 is from 8-10 am on Wednesday of finals week. Exam 1 Friday, 9/16 Covering sections 1.3, 3.1-3.4. Exam 2 Friday, 10/14 Covering sections 4.1-4.6. Exam 3 Friday, 11/11 Covering sections 5.1-5.3, 6.1-6.4. Exam 4 Friday, 12/16 Cumulative with emphasis on 7.2-7.4, 8.1, 8.2. Make-up Exams If you will not be able to take an exam on the scheduled date and time you must make other arrangements with the instructor well in advance. In cases where proper notification has not been given, or if the reason for missing the exam is not valid the make-up the exam may be penalized or may not be given. MyMathLab Homework 7.5% The instructions for registering for MyMathLab, MML can be found on the WyoCourse site. Online assignments are usually around 10-12 questions per section. These problems are chosen as representative of the basic concepts presented in the sections. You should settle for nothing less than 100% on each online homework assignment. None of the MML assignments will be dropped. MML assignments are due by 11:59pm on their due date and will not be accepted late. Check the attached course schedule or the course calendar on the MML website for the due dates. Notebook 7.5% The notebook consists of your handwritten solutions for each of the suggested problems listed at the end of this syllabus. Please adhere to the following requirements: You must use a spiral bound notebook or composition notebook. All of the sections and problems must appear in the same order that they are listed at the end of this syllabus. Write the chapter and section number at the top of each page, and the problem numbers should be written in the left hand margin of the page. An example page is posted on WyoCourses. Your legible name (first & last), course number (2355) & discussion section number must be printed on the outside of the front cover of your notebook. The notebooks will be checked three times over the semester in your computer lab meeting time (see schedule). At these checks your discussion leader may suggest ways in which your notebook could be improved but no grade will be assigned. The notebooks will be collected for grading during your computer lab time on Tuesday December 6. The notebook should include all problems except those from Section 8.2. The notebook grade will be based on completeness, neatness, and adherence to the above requirements. Notebooks turned in late will receive a zero. If you are repeating the course, you may not turn in your notebook from a previous semester. Notebooks will be returned during your discussion time on Thursday December 8. Any notebooks not picked up during this time will lose 2 of the possible 12 notebook points. Excel Labs 7.5% Tuesday discussion sessions are reserved for help with computer labs using Microsoft Excel. The labs are designed to reinforce and extend the ideas covered in class. Over the semester you will complete 10 labs. None of the lab scores will be dropped. Each student is expected to create the Excel file for each lab themselves. Sharing your Excel file with another student, and copying an Excel file from another student 2
are both violations of the academic honesty policy for this course (see Academic Honesty) and are subject to the sanctions outlined in UW Regulation 6-802. Hard copies of the completed computer labs can be left with the instructor at the beginning/end of the Wednesday lecture or placed in the plastic file holder outside my office (Ross 225) before 8:30 am on Friday. Your discussion leader does not collect the labs. Labs DO NOT go in my department mailbox or under my office door. Any that show up in my department mailbox or under my office door will receive an automatic grade of zero. The Excel file should be uploaded to the associated lab assignment in Grades on WyoCourses by 8:30 am on the due date. Both the hard copy and the electronic files are due by 8:30 am on Fridays. The due dates are listed on the lab and the course schedule. Late labs will not be accepted and will receive a grade of zero. Quizzes 7.5% A short quiz will be given at the end of each Thursday discussion (see schedule). The quizzes will cover the sections indicated in the schedule and will be similar to the MML homework and the suggested problems from the text. You are allowed to use a non-graphing calculator on each quiz. Your three lowest Quiz scores will be dropped. Extra Credit up to 1.75% Students can earn up to ten points of extra credit. These points are added to the total of your Exam 1 score and if you earn all ten it adds 1.75% to your overall average in the class. One extra point may be earned each time you politely point out any mathematical errors made during the lecture. To receive these points you must turn in a sheet of paper with your name and documentation of the error. Other opportunities for earning extra credit will be announced in the lectures. Discussions Each Thursday discussion section will be devoted to answering questions concerning problem sets assigned from MML or the book (those listed on the last page of this syllabus) and clarifying concepts presented in lecture. To prepare for the discussions you should do the assigned MML homework and look over the suggested problems from the text. Bring your questions about any of these problems to the discussion. Be sure to write down or take a screen shot of any MML problem that you would like to discuss. Trying to reconstruct the specific details of a problem that you did not write down can be frustrating for you and your discussion leader. You are expected to bring a notebook, calculator, note card and questions. At the end of each discussion a quiz will be given. Each quiz will be worth 10 points. You must be in class the entire hour if you wish to take the quiz. Your three lowest quiz scores will be dropped at the end of the semester. Math Assistance Center You can seek out for FREE tutoring in the Math Assistance Center (MAC). The MAC, located in Ross Hall 29, offers free mathematics assistance for 1000 and 2000 level math classes including MATH 2350. The MAC Fall hours are typically Monday-Thursday, 10:00 am 5:00 pm and Friday 10:00 am 1:00 pm. No appointment is required, just drop in. You can even go there to do your homework and you do not have to ask any questions or to seek any help. It is also a good place to meet your group mates. The MAC has 9 desktop computers that you can use to do your online homework in addition to a smart board/projector. You can find current textbooks, mock exams, cheat sheets, and other helpful study resources. Of course, in addition to the friendly helpful staff! Grading Rubric Throughout this course your written work on quizzes and exams will be evaluated in the spirit of the following rubric. You should strive to produce written solutions that are clear and well organized, make proper use of mathematical notation, demonstrate an understanding of the mathematical concepts involved and result in a correct solution. If you practice these skills while working on your MML problems as well as the suggested problems from the text you will be more likely to meet the standard expected of your written work on quizzes and exams.
