Kingsport City Schools Monitoring: Review: Annually, in April Descriptor Term: System Descriptor Code:.00 Rescinds:.00 Issued Date: 0/0/ Issued: 0/0/ 0 The Board believes that the issuance of grades serves to promote continuous evaluation of students' performance, to inform students and parents of students' progress and to provide a basis for bringing about changes in students' performance, if such changes are necessary. Subject-area grades shall be expressed by the letters A, B, C, D, and F, with corresponding numerical values. This grading system shall be uniform throughout the school system for each grade. The grading system to be used beginning with the 00-00 school year is as follows: A... - 0 B... - C... - D...0 - F...Below 0 Weighting for Honors Courses and National Industry Certification Shall include the addition of three () points to the grades used to calculate the semester average. Weighting for Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment Courses A student must take the AP Exam in an Advanced Placement course in order to receive AP level credit (+ points). Students who do not take the AP Exam will only receive honors level credit (+ points) for the course in question. Effective immediately and retroactive for all courses for students in grades - (Classes of 0, 0 and 0): Add. points to the base grade weight (-A, -B, etc.) for honors courses and.0 points to the base points assigned for an AP course. Add. point to the base weight grade for the upper numerical ranges of A's, B's, and C's in honors courses and. points to the base weight grade for the upper numerical ranges of A's, B's, and C's in AP courses. These are designated as + grades. Adopt the new GPA as soon as they can be calculated but freeze the rank until it is scheduled to be recalculated in January 0. Version Date: January, 0

System.00 0 0 Effective immediately for students in the class of 00 and subsequent classes: Add.0 to the base points assigned for a dual enrollment course and. for state dual credit courses. Conduct shall be marked as follows: O...Outstanding S...Satisfactory N...Needs Improvement U...Unsatisfactory Conduct grades are based on behavior and shall not be deducted from scholastic grades. Attendance records shall be used in determining the awarding of grades, or the passing of a course, or promotion or retention. Absences, however, shall not be used in awarding grades. Plus and minus evaluations are not to be added to letter grades with the exception of Honors and AP courses. Grades are not to be changed once recorded on the report card. If an erroneous grade has been recorded or grades are changed due to retesting, etc. the new grades must be corrected and updated in the system database. Grade reports and/or progress reports given at the end of each four and one-half ( /) weeks, nine () weeks shall be determined from academic performance. Weighted System Students who take Honors level courses will have three () points added to their final semester numerical average. Students who take Advanced Placement courses and complete the Advanced Placement Test will have five () points added to their final semester numerical average. This internal weighting is consistent with what is allowed for the Tennessee Lottery Scholarship Program, the Tennessee Board of Regents Colleges and Universities, and the University of Tennessee College System. The unweighted (.0 scale) GPA allows for the internal weighting of the additional three and five points. The external weighted grade point average will be in place to recognize rigor and strength of schedule for students. This is the grade point average that will be utilized for class rank and submitted to colleges and universities. This average incorporates the internal addition of points for Honors courses and points for Advanced Placement courses. The external rank will incorporate plus (+) grades for the higher numerical ranges for A s, B s, and C s. The grade point average will be calculated and rounded to the thousandths place. This procedure could result in more than one person having the same rank. Page of

System.00 Grades issued on the first and third nine weeks report card and on progress reports will not reflect the additional or points. The additional points are reflected on the final semester grade. The final semester grade is the only grade that appears on the transcript.
