Colonial Virginia Aeromodelers Chapter 1474 Monthly News Volume No XII Issue 4 Editor: Freeman Post Date: 1 April 2012 Club Web Site cvarc.homestead.com John Backes President Presidents Column 2012 Meeting Schedule All meetings (except for the Christmas Dinner) in 2012 will be held at the Williamsburg Christian Church (200 John Tyler Lane) on the second Thursday of the month, starting at 7 PM. The next meetings will be April 12 and May 10. Directions to Williamsburg Christian Church. At the intersection of Route 199 and Route 5, turn the OPPOSITE direction that you would turn to go to the field. Go 50 yards and turn right (left is Strawberry Plains Rd.). You can t miss the Church; it is on the right just past the Professional Park that can be seen from Route 199. Everyone needs to be warned that there is an additional fine of $200 for going over 25 MPH and the cops are there a lot. Mall Show The Mall Show was held on March 17 & 18 with setup on March 16. We had a very successful show with lots of interest from the public and the participation level by club members was up from the last couple of years. Thanks to all that worked to make this happen, especially Bill VanCleave who spent a lot of time and effort preparing for the show and making sure that hundreds of little details are properly addressed. Having Fun? In the February column, I suggested that you should examine what aspects of the hobby were giving you the most fun and to try something new if your current efforts were not supplying the necessary amount of fun. For myself there are two areas that have been enjoyable. The first is electric airplanes. I have done a great deal of flying so far this year and that would not be possible without the electric airplanes. I have 98 flights so far this year and that is nearly double the amount in my next best year. I have flown four times at three different indoor sites. I have also found a place to fly at lunch at work. Much of the flying would not have been possible with a glow or gas powered airplane. The second area that brought enjoyment was building the blue foam airplanes. We had a lot of fun last year with the Slow Combat One Design planes and I made a pusher version that I first flew on January first. After a few modifications, it is flying well now. I also am finishing a new design that I hope to fly at the Electrics over Williamsburg in a couple of weeks. I stated that you could get a lot accomplished during the mall show and definitely was please with the amount that I got completed. An added benefit of doing it at the mall show was having extra people to help. Having an extra pair of hands definitely made things much easier when I was trying to epoxy several large pieces together.
Did you take the time to examine what you are doing and what areas would be the most fun? Have you taken any action? Show and Tell We are going to have a short show and tell at the end of each meeting. Bring in your project or some new item that you purchased. Cliff Casey Safety Officer Safety No input this month. Joe Musika Activities Coordinator Activities Another month is here, and we're starting to get into the schedule. But, before we talk about it, some info on some recent events. Newport News held a fun-fly the first week in March. March winds prevailed, and some of us backed out of flying. We were represented by two members, John Backus and Gary Clifford. Brave souls that they are!!! All events were worked around bomb drops. Despite the weather, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Once again, we held our annual mall show in March. There was a good turnout in display planes. The turnout of visitors was better than the previous year. Lots of work on planes got done by attending members. Everyone felt it was a good event. There was a swap meet in Hanover last month. Now, for our summer schedule: Electric Fly-in Apr. 14. You need AMA membership and electric powered plane to be able to fly in this event. Spring Picnic May 12. Bring your plane or planes and appetite. Also bring a dish to share if you want. Profile May 19. Open to all profile planes. Warbirds over Williamsburg June 2.This is a popular show, featuring both WW1 and WW2 planes. Apr. 21 HRRC holds their Spring Fly-in. A great event put on by Suffolk. More news next month...
2012 Mall Show Bill reports visitors at show lighter than normal. Raffle plane was won by a Newport News RC club member. The show went well and Bill wants to thank all that participated and helped. Bill has headed up this event sense 1999...Thanks Bill.
Alan Fry Traning Officer Training Corner Website of the Month Anything with an outrunner motor and ESC will fly. Don t believe me? Well, click on this month s website called HaddadRC. HaddadRC is a very entertaining website with plenty of pictures and videos that will prove that anything with an outrunner motor and ESC will fly. Thanks to John Backes for submitting this website. Here is the link: http://www.haddadrc.com/ Do you have a favorite website? If so, let me know and I will put it in the newsletter. Favorite online store, how to build, how to fly, etc- send me the link! My email address: AlanWFEmail-CVA@yahoo.com RC Engine Bearing Replacement The weekend of the mall show I replaced the bearings in an OS 46 AX. Since this was my first time replacing bearings in a RC engine, I searched around for as much information as I could find. Replacing bearings is not by any means rocket science, but knowing a few tricks sure does make the job easier. Several CVA members gave me some good advice (Thanks to all!) and I found some information online. Here are some links to an article and videos for replacing RC engine bearings: http://masportaviator.com/2004/03/08/changing-your-2-stroke-bearings/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuzeco3edum http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olsoxplgzoi&feature=channel See you at the field.
