Nestled at the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, Morristown is a place rich in natural beauty and Appalachian culture. The city and surrounding area offers great places to visit and explore. Morristown is a bustling town with nearly 28,000 permanent residents with a combined total of more than 62,000 permanent residents in Hamblen County. Morristown is centrally located between the Smoky Mountains, Knoxville and the Tri Cities, and is only a day's drive from nearly two thirds of the nation's population east of the Mississippi River. There are more than 700 hotel/motel rooms available in Hamblen County. Panther Creek State Park offers hiking, mountain biking, horse trails, pool, picnic facilities and pavilions. Hamblen County ranks fifth in terms of travel related expenditures in the 16 county East Tennessee Region and 20th out of the state's 95 counties. Morristown is the gateway to Cherokee Lake, Clinch Mountain Range and the Tennessee Wilderness Road all nestled along the 25E East Tennessee Crossing Scenic Byway. Named for the Native American tribe that once lived in the area Cherokee Lake covers 30,300 acres at full pool, is 59 miles long, and has 463 miles of shoreline attracting more than 2.5 million visitors annually. To our south, Douglas Lake offers 513 miles of shoreline. The first European settler of what eventually became Morristown was a farmer named Gideon Morris. The movie The Evil Dead was filmed in Morristown. The cabin featured in the film has since burned down, though the chimney remains. The movie Five Across the Eyes was filmed in Morristown. Hamblen County has 21 Century Farms. There are more than 30 golf courses within a 50 mile radius of Morristown.
Crockett Tavern Museum This Museum was built on the site of the boyhood home of Davy Crockett. It is a reconstruction of the 1790s John Crockett Tavern. Panther Creek State Park Panther Creek State Park is a 1,435 acre park located on the Cherokee Reservoir just outside of Morristown City limits. The park has 17 hiking trails covering more than 30 miles of terrain at all levels of difficulty. Hikers can enjoy magnificent views of Cherokee Lake and the Cumberland Mountains. There are also more than 15 miles of mountain biking trails and 7 miles of horseback riding trails. MORRISTOWN REGIONAL AIRPORT The Morristown Community has valued the importance of General Aviation from the early 1950s. In 1953 a grass strip, small maintenance hangar and office structure sat at this site. The first paved runway was completed in 1958. The first professional terminal building was dedicated in 1968. Morristown has been the beneficiary of several other improvements funded by federal, state, and local dollars since. Today the importance of general aviation is even greater. Morristown Regional Airport and the Evelyn Bryan Johnson Terminal is the front door to Morristown. This door opens our community to a world of business opportunity, development, and employment. POLICE The Morristown Police Department consists of 88 full time sworn officers, 13 reserve officers and 6 civilian personnel, and serves a population of approximately 29,000 citizens. Several units make up the Morristown Police Department; each unit specializes in different areas of police work. Although the many units of the department have different tasks, every officer and civilian is dedicated to providing professional law enforcement services to the citizens of Morristown.
Public Transportation East Tennessee Human Resource Agency (ETHRA) provides the only federally funded public Transportation within the LAMTPO region. ETHRA Public Transit provides door to door, non emergency transportation service including accessibility to persons with disabilities. Anyone can ride with ETHRA, however children need adult supervision inn order to ride on the ETHRA vehicles.
