RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Graduate Research Assistant, Cynthia Korpan, Learning and Teaching Centre, UVic 2013 2014 This research project, initiated by the Teaching Assistant and Graduate Student Advancement (TAGSA) executive committee and funded by the Educational Developers Caucus (EDC) of the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE), is a national survey of Canadian post-secondary institutions' teaching assistant orientations. The outcome is to have at the end of the year a comprehensive analysis and report about teaching assistant orientations from all Canadian post-secondary institutions. Working closely with the TAGSA executive, my role as graduate research assistant is to get ethics approval, construct and conduct the survey, and to assist in preparing the final report and article for publication. LATHE Graduate Certificate Candidate, Educational Psychology and Leadership Studies, UVic 2012 2014 Completion of this Graduate Certificate includes research into the pedagogical foundations of university teaching and well as practical skills in course design and implementation. I am currently redesigning, from the ground up, a new introductory-level course in Canadian history. PhD Candidate, History, UVic 2011 Present My doctoral research is in the history of rural development and sustainability in nineteenthcentury Ontario. Through a microhistorical study of the township of Brudenell, Ontario, 1850 1910, I examine the relationship between settlers and their local environments (social, economic, political, and cultural) within the context of Canadian colonial expansion. My evidence is derived from extensive research in assessment rolls, censuses, and field reports of colonization agents from the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century. Graduate Research Assistant, Dr. Eric W. Sager, History, UVic 2010 2011 I assisted Dr. Sager with his research on income inequality in twentieth-century Canada. My primary duties included searching for newspaper and magazine articles on income inequality, researching the impact of Pierre Berton s The Smug Minority (1968) on debates over income inequality, and examining the 1944 family allowances debates in the House of Commons. Master of Arts, History, Guelph 2008 2009 My major research paper was based on a deep analysis of the 1871 Census of Brudenell, Ontario, combined with the exploration of contemporary maps. Graduate Research Assistant, Dr. Smaro Kamboureli, TransCanada Institute, Guelph 2008 2009 I was Dr. Kamboureli s research and administrative assistant. My primary duties included general office and administrative work, compiling and annotating research portfolios, and planning workshops and conferences at TransCanada Institute. Graduate Research Assistant, Dr. Matthew Hayday, History, Guelph 2008 2009 I assisted Dr. Hayday with his research on the reception of official bilingualism policies in English Canada in the 1960s. My primary duties included scanning and compiling newspaper articles on bilingualism from a number of prominent Canadian newspapers. Researcher, Dr. Kris Inwood, 1871 Scotland and Canada Census Project, Guelph 2008 I worked as part of the research team on the 1871 Scotland and Canada Census Project. My primary duty was to index all mention of Aboriginal peoples in the 1871 Census of Canada.
