BOARD OF EDUCATION Regular Meeting A regular meeting of the Board of Education was called to order at 7 p.m. at West Ottawa Public Schools Administration Office, 1138 136th Avenue. President L. Rutan opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. REGULAR MEETING CALL TO ORDER PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Members Present: D. Duistermars; Cathy Lebster; K. McCoy, who joined the meeting during recognition of the Art Department; S. McKanna; L. Rutan; R. Schipper;. Superintendent T. Martin, Associate Superintendent of Business Services/Treasurer J. English, and Student Senate Representative Dominic Aquino were also present. ROLL CALL Members Absent: K. McCoy (for only the Routine Business portion of the meeting) Moved by S. McKanna, supported by R. Schipper, to approve the minutes of the April 23, 2018, regular meeting as presented. Motion carried 6-0-0. Moved by C. Lebster, supported by D. Duistermars, that the agenda be approved as presented. Motion carried 6-0-0. Nathan Kukla, West Ottawa Art Department Chair, shared information on the 86 students who won 104 juried awards for their art this year. He also recognized art teachers Brent Jackson and Brian Kelly, who put their creativity and artistry to work with our students. The Board personally recognized the art students in attendance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES APPROVAL OF AGENDA RECOGNITION Art Department The Board recognized and thanked Dominic Aquino for his outstanding leadership as the Student Senate Representative to the West Ottawa Board of Education for this school year. J. English reported on the recent bond sale and that there is an action item on the agenda tonight to approve the ratification resolution of the sale. He stated we are four years into the 2014 Bond, which was a ten year plan. The plan is on schedule, and an update on the bond work and the construction that has been done will be available soon. Student Senate Representative Bond Sale Ben Scholten from GMB Architecture & Engineering presented the design plan for Woodside Elementary School. The site plan is to alleviate some of the parking issues, replace asphalt, expand parking by 50 or 60 spaces, bury rain water storage under the new parking lot, and improve traffic flow. The building plan includes the addition of two new classrooms, combining a storage room and current teachers lounge into a classroom, repurposing a very small classroom into a new teachers lounge, and replacement of glazing and the outside doors. Windows are also planned to be replaced at a later date. This project will go out to bid in June, and a special meeting may be required in July or August to approve a bid. We are planning for fall construction. GMB Design for Woodside Elementary

Page 2 C. Lebster recently attended an MASB school law workshop. She reported the following items were presented during the workshop: the history of Title IX, which was signed into law in 1992; enforcement of Title IV; expectations of the Office of Civil Rights; the different types of violations; case studies; and a review of Michigan s child protection laws. Superintendent T. Martin reported: (Cont d.) MASB School Law Workshop: Title IX and MI s Child Protection Law Superintendent s Update We are proud to announce that three members of the Class of 2018 earned recognition as one of only 7,500 students nation-wide to receive a National Merit Scholarship Corporation award. The Board s Student Senate Representative Dominic Aquino is a National Merit Scholarship Fund recipient. Sam Gruenler is a National Merit Corporate Scholarship recipient, and Isaac Sierra is a National Merit College-Sponsored Scholarship recipient. These three students were among 15 West Ottawa Seniors who earned National Merit Semi- Finalist status last spring by placing ahead of over 1.6 million qualifying students. Five of those 15 seniors qualified as National Merit Finalists placing them in the top 1% of all seniors nation-wide. These three gentlemen earned the rare recognition as National Merit Scholarship recipients this spring. Dominic is headed to the University of Michigan to study applied math and computer science. Sam plans to study international economics at Notre Dame, and Isaac is headed to the University of Chicago to study Astrophysics. Congratulations to Dominic, Sam and Isaac as well as their parents and teachers. There will be 529 West Ottawa graduates this year. The Senior Breakfast and Honors Convocation are tomorrow morning. Athletic Director Pat Marsman will be here next month to review the year in athletics. We received a rough draft of the survey we are going to do in June. Student Senate Representative Dominic Aquino reported on the following: Student Senate Update Next year s Student Senate Representative to the Board will be Jurrien Wilson. May 10 Yearbook Distribution May 14 Anatomoy and physiology field trip to the Mol Simulation Center at Spectrum May 15 Voter Registration Drive May 16 - Free physical night May 19 - IB Art at the GRAM The Girls Tennis Team are conference and regional champs. The Girls Water Polo Team went to the state tournament. Recent academic accomplishments were reported. The entire board was cordially invited to attend Senior Breakfast, Convocation, and Graduation.

Lebster reported changes to state assessments for next year, classroom learning labs and professional development on instructional practices were discussed during the May 2 Instruction committee meeting. D. Duistermars reported the following items were discussed during the May 2 Student Services committee meeting: indicators all districts have to monitor annually, special education parents meeting, and annual education reports. K. McCoy reported the following items were discussed during the May 3 Finance and Facilities committee meeting: bond sale, Woodside Elementary School design plan, meal price action item on the agenda tonight, 2018-19 budget plan, and the 2018-2019 Budget Hearing starts at 6:30 p.m. on June 18 (just prior to the regular June meeting). McKanna reported a staffing update, Michigan State Police bus inspection results, and the MPSERS (Michigan Public School Employee Retirement System) employer and employee contribution plans were discussed during the May 8 Finance and Personnel committee meeting.
