GRACE ACADEMY COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 2018-2019 WITH BOOK AND SUPPLY LIST Textbooks are subject to change. To order books, please see the Publishers Information on the last page. Publishers and the ISBN numbers are listed next to titles. Grace Academy recommends ordering books no earlier than 6/15/18. Each K-1 student is required to bring each of the following: Pencils - 12 count Glue sticks Elmer s 6 count Child scissors - round tip child Erasers 2 count smudge free pink Disinfecting Wipes- 75 count in plastic closable container We recommended brand name as they are better quality and last longer. Your student will not keep the supplies with them or take them home they will be community used supplies in each classroom (this does not apply to the art classes). Please see below for any additional supplies needed. Fees will be totaled per family and included in your Family Folder at Orientation. Fees will be due the first week of school payable to Grace Academy. K-1 Classes: The following courses are Kindergarten and 1 st grade level unless otherwise noted. Art This class will introduce students to the art world through the Elements of Art: Line, Shape, Color, Texture, Value, and Space. Students will be continually creating projects that help them develop motor skills, increase their awareness of the world around them, and encourage confidence in independent decision making. They will be introduced to a variety of art medias: pencil, crayon, marker, paint, watercolor, paper mache, clay, and collage. All lessons are integrated with other areas of learning and will encourage the students problem solving and linking skills. All students will have projects included in the Night of the Arts show in the spring. Supplies: 1 box of Crayola crayons, 1 box of Crayola colored pencils, and 1 box of Crayola markers, roll or package of paper towels (These supplies go into the Art Room s shared supplies.) Character Lessons/Bible Students will learn character development through the stories of creation, Jesus and various Old Testament and New Testament people. The focus will be on God s gifts, growing in our knowledge of the Bible through class discussion and weekly lessons. Art, Bible verses, and songs are incorporated into lessons. Workbook: Enjoying God s Gifts, 1 st Grade Positive Action Bible Curriculum (978-1-59557-062-8) Supplies: one 2-pocket folder labeled for this class Drama (Grades K-3) - Students will learn theater skills, techniques and history by performing simple skits and plays based on parables and popular fairy tales, incorporating the principles of Galatians 5:22-23. This course includes storytelling, puppet theater, speaking and confidence building activities. Students will also be given the opportunity to sing simple songs with choreographed movements. Enrichment (Grades K-5) Enrichment is a fun and exciting time for K-5 th Grade students from 12:35-2:00. Students will eat lunch together, socialize and participate in enrichment activities, such as art, exercise, music, science experiments, cooking and seasonal projects. Supply Fee: $15

Health/PE (Grades K-2) - This class is to help improve student s sport skills and fitness. Students will participate in exercises, games and various sports. These activities will teach coordination and build confidence. Most games are cooperative in nature and will have a low-key competitive element or variation that will help students understand how to work together. Students learn how to compete appropriately and use good sportsmanship. Students will also learn about important health issues, such as how to take care of their body, exercise and proper nutrition. Students will learn the value and benefits of physical activity. Supplies: Comfortable clothes for activities and tennis shoes and a folder. Bringing athletic wear to change in to change for class is optional. Math (Kindergarten) This class is very hands-on! Students will learn recognition and applications of numbers 0 through 30. Concepts of measurement, recognizing basic shapes, collecting data, creating and extending patterns will be covered. Homework and parental involvement are required to reinforce concepts learned. Textbook: Mathematics Kindergarten- Purposeful Design Publications (9781583315750)- To be ordered from Christianbook.com Supplies: One 2-pocket folder Math (1 st Grade) - This class will introduce and explore Mathematical topics through a hands-on approach. Patterns, addition, subtraction, and problem solving will be discovered through the use of manipulatives. Students will learn these concepts in a fun way and be able to see the reasoning behind the math. Homework and parental involvement are required to reinforce concepts learned. Textbook: Mathematics Grade 1 Purposeful Design Publications (9781583315774)- To be ordered from Christianbook.com Supplies: Addition and subtraction sets of flash cards (can be found at Dollar Store, Target, or Wal-Mart), cow-marbled notebook, 2 pocket folder Music (Grades K-5) - In this class, students will explore the basics of music. Using fun classroom songs and hands-on activities, students will learn about rhythm, melody, harmony, expression, the basics of music reading, and mentorship through elementary school. In this class, there will be songs about learning, fun worship songs, Holiday-themed songs for Thanksgiving and Christmas and a musical theater study! Students will also learn about composers and what instruments they used. This class is designed to be colorful and fun- filled allowing students to use their right brain and expand their knowledge through creativity and music. Performing Arts (K-3) - Students will acquire performance skills through hearing, creating and performing skits and one-act plays that will often incorporate the use of music, song and choreographed movements. They will build confidence and sharpen speaking skills by working together to produce skits and plays from many genres including parables, fairy tales, and stories from around the world. Reading/Phonics I - This hands-on class will focus on learning phonics in a structured manner in order to prepare students to learn to read. Homework and parental involvement are required to reinforce concepts learned. Reading/Phonics II - Prerequisite: Students should start class with a working knowledge of basic phonics rules and the ability to read easy reader books, or have completed Reading/Phonics I at Grace Academy. - This class will build on the phonics rules and work on reading comprehension skills. Homework and parental involvement are required to reinforce concepts learned. Students will be provided with opportunities to use science process skills and the methods of science as they explore weather and seasons, sun, moon and stars, the five senses, water, energy (sound, heat and light), forces and motion. Supplies: one 1-inch 3 ring binder, 5 plastic dividers with pockets Workbook and Lab Fee: $20 Social Studies Students will learn about rules and laws, where people live, resources, US symbols, people of long ago, the first Americans and immigrants, and about goods and services. The students will learn about holidays, celebrations and will also learn basic geography skills. Textbook: Harcourt Social Studies Student Edition, Grade 1, A Child s View (9780153858826) Supplies: One 2-pocket folder, labeled for this class Spanish - This introductory class will emphasize vocabulary building. Students will be able to identify and understand words in Spanish through fun activities involving music and games. Homework is important in order to enhance class participation. Classes are conducted on a bilingual level. One project will be assigned per semester to reinforce the student s knowledge of geographical and cultural aspects of Spanish speaking countries. Workbook Fee: $15 Writing - Students will be using the WriteShop curriculum in this course. WriteShop Primary uses hands-on activities to teach the concepts of the writing process at the very simplest level. It s perfect for pre-writers as well as beginning writers. Lessons are divided into Activity Sets to fully cover a topic without hurrying the child. Even at this young age, children can learn that writing is a process made up of several steps: Planning. Familiar topics, simple graphic organizers, and teacher guidance help unlock your child s creative ideas. Writing. Children who can t write independently are encouraged to dictate stories to you. Writing assignments grow from 3 to 5 sentences. Lessons build incrementally, and as children grow in skill and confidence, they are encouraged to become more independent writers. Editing. From the beginning, children learn that editing is a natural part of writing. Handwriting without Tears is a handwriting curriculum that will also be taught in the class. Study Hall Independent study/homework time available to students K-12 during periods when no class is assigned. A Grace Academy teacher supervises Study Hall. Students must always attend study hall if they are not enrolled in a class. They may not leave campus. 8/13/18 4
