Students complete course requests with classes to meet graduation requirements and to be prepared for post high endeavors. The following are required courses for 12 th grade: Literature class and composition class, English 12 or AP English Literature & Composition 12 US Government or AP US Govt 3. Students may enroll in elective classes offering increased academic challenge, such as advanced and appropriate AP classes, in place of required grade level classes. See pages 4-5 for elective choice selections. 4. Registration will begin on January 29 and run through February 14. The staff at Stevens High School recommends that students consider career interests and scholarship requirements to make course choices. 5. The student s typical academic performance and participation in extracurricular activities should be considered when determining class load. 6. Students must enroll in courses needed to graduate and additional electives to meet the minimum graduation requirements of 22 credits. Students need to make sure they meet the minimum graduation requirements of 22 credits by reviewing their transcript and credit check. Students will also need to update My Academic Plan, formerly PLP, before graduation. 7. Students who have not tested at the ninth grade reading level (SRI: 1000), according to the district's mandated reading test, are automatically enrolled in a reading course. Students will continue to be automatically enrolled in reading each year until they reach the score of SRI: 1000 reading level. 8. Students will not be allowed to remove any course selections after February 14, 2018. Staffing is based on students course selections; therefore, dropping a class will only be allowed in rare and unique circumstances. *** South Dakota High School Activity Association policy is as follows: To be eligible for extracurricular activities, a student has to have passed four classes in the previous semester, and he or she also has to be currently enrolled in four classes and meet all district requirements as listed in the student handbook under Extra/Co-Curricular Student Activities Guidelines.
2 Graduation Requirements It is the student s responsibility to ensure graduation, post-secondary and scholarship requirements. Students must register each year for courses required to meet high school graduation, college and career goals. Counselors, teachers and principals are available to help students in their decisions. SDMyLife.com is a student resource for academic and career planning. ALL students must complete a Four Year Academic Plan, formerly called PLP, showing a minimum of 22 credits on to meet graduation requirements. The goal of the Four Year Academic Plan is to help students develop a four year high school plan that meets their career and education goals. Stevens 9 th and 10 th graders are provided this opportunity in class, and it is the responsibility for 12 th and new students to complete and revise this process before graduation. According to South Dakota Codified Law 13-28-37, any student in grades nine (9), ten (10), eleven (11), or twelve (12) may apply to a postsecondary institution (college, technical school) as a special dual enrolled student if he/she has not yet met graduation requirements. For information on Dual Enrollment Board of Regents Reduced Tuition Classes or Dual Enrollment Free Western Dakota Tech classes for 11-12 th grade, please see your school counselor. For Test Out Information Program, you can refer to the district website at www.rcas.org sometime in April. Under the heading of Parent & Students, click on Parent/Student Home then click on Test Out Program for more information. Online classes need to be taken through the state website: www.sdvs.k12.sd.us. Classes are fee based and need to be pre-approved by your school counselor and administrator. Forms are available in student services. It s the student s responsibility to check with NCAA (NCAA.org) or NAIA (NAIA.org) for eligibility requirements if he/she is planning to participate in college athletics.
