Information for Students with Prior Graduate Coursework and University of Oregon Coursework Substitutions Master s Degree credit is determined by the Department (via the student s three-member advising committee and the Graduate Education Committee). The basis for this determination is that the student has completed a research thesis based upon empirical data which meets Departmental standards for scholarly content and ethical guidelines. If this is successfully negotiated, the First Year Research Practicum can be waived. Waivers of other course requirements should be discussed with the Director of Clinical Training. Students should prepare a short statement requesting the waiver and evidence of equivalent coverage. Information essential for determining the applicability of the prior coursework includes course syllabi, reading materials used, assignments, grading system, and overall level of sophistication of the course structure and content. Most often, the faculty member teaching the particular course in the Department also will judge the suitability of the prior course for the objectives of the Departmental or Clinical Program requirement. For all waivers of Departmental requirements, the Graduate Education Committee must make a final approval; for all waivers of Clinical Program requirements, the Clinical Faculty must make a final approval. Petitions for waivers must be submitted in writing, with places for endorsement by the Director of Clinical Training, by the person in charge of the course requested to be waived, and by the person from the appropriate final decision committee (i.e., the Director of the Clinical Program or the Chair of the Graduate Education Committee). The waiver must be included in the student s file. On other occasions, a student might elect to take courses elsewhere in the University that have obvious relevance for required clinical courses (e.g., an assessment or therapy course offered by another department). Under these conditions, the student should petition the clinical faculty to formally approve the substitution and it should be entered into his or her file. Receiving a course waiver will not guarantee a reduction in the amount of time toward the PhD. Departmental Financial Support (entering cohort Fall 2018) In the first year, a student entering our graduate program will be offered a nine-month academic year appointment as a.49 full time equivalent (FTE) graduate employee (GE) with teaching assistance or research responsibilities. In addition, we are especially excited to offer you a First Year Merit Award in recognition of your outstanding record, in the form of a scholarship of $4,000.00 to be provided in the spring term. For a student entering with a bachelor s degree, your first year support will total $23,074. For a student entering with a master s degree in psychology (or closely related field), this will total $23,583. For some students, it may be possible to supplement this with a summer research appointment, which could further increase your annual income by up to $6,358 (or $6,528 with a master s degree). Beyond the first year, students will be offered a nine-month academic year appointment as a.49 FTE GE (at least $19,074 before a masters is obtained, or at least $19,584 after a masters is obtained), and a possible three month summer appointment with additional teaching or research responsibilities, which could further increase your annual income by up to $6,358 (or $6,528 after a master s degree is obtained). Students are also eligible for a Travel/Research Award of $500 in each of the first 5 years in the program, to help offset the cost of research expenses related to a required research project (First Year Project, Supporting Area Project, or Dissertation), OR conference travel for the purpose of presenting (as first author) the result of research performed while at the University of Oregon. Graduate employees with an appointment equal to or greater than.20 FTE each term receive a tuition waiver that exempts them from payment of the instruction fee portion of tuition on the first 16 credit hours per term. During the 2017-2018 academic year, the tuition waiver is valued at $4,842 per term for residents and $8,505 per term for non-residents. Graduate employees are assessed non-instructional fees set by the Oregon University System at $692 per term for 2017-18, of which the university pays $631; the student is responsible for the balance of $61 as stipulated in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the University of Oregon and the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation. The one-time $430 matriculation fee normally required of new students is waived for each new student who is a graduate employee in their first term at the university. Graduate fellows are also eligible to receive health insurance benefits for themselves at very little cost, and at subsidized rates for family members. During the 2017-18 academic year, the value of the health insurance benefit for a single graduate fellow is approximately $1,734 per term. Support after the first year is contingent on a student's satisfactory progress in the program and the availability of funds. The Department places a high priority on supporting our graduate students and has an excellent record of doing so. In fact, nearly all students in the last several decades have received at least four years of support.
