Science and biotechnology are at the forefront of developments in health, medicine and biotechnology. If you want to produce the next important vaccine, find important cures or protect the biological borders of Australia, this could be the career for you. CERTIFICATE III IN LABORATORY SKILLS (MSL30116) The Certificate III in Laboratory Skills is a general course developed for inclusion as a school program (VCE or VCAL). This course is designed to provide you with entry level technical training in laboratory skills across a range of industries. It will also assist you in making an informed decision as to whether or not you would like to pursue a career within the science industry. Units 1 and 2 of the program include occupational health and safety awareness, recording and presenting data, planning and conducting laboratory/field work, performing a range of basic laboratory tests and maintaining the laboratory fit for purpose. Units 3 and 4 offer scored assessment that contributes to your ATAR. Units in the second year include perform aseptic techniques, contributing to the achievement of quality objectives, preparing working solutions and culture media and performing microscopic examinations. The Units 3 and 4 of the VCE VET Laboratory Skills are not designed as stand-alone units. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS This course can only be completed as part of your VCE or VCAL program in Year 11 & 12. You need to have successfully completed Year 10 (or Year 9 by negotiation) and have the approval of your school to enrol in the course. CAREER OUTCOMES The Certificate III in Laboratory Skills may lead you to apply for entry-level employment as a sampler or tester, or laboratory/field assistant. CERTIFICATE IV IN LABORATORY TECHNIQUES (MSL40116) This course provides you with the essential skills and knowledge to work as a technical officer or laboratory technician in a range of science based industries or as a pathway into future studies in science. You will gain hands-on experience in our laboratories. Gain technical skills and scientific knowledge in microscopy, chemistry, microbiology, histology and tissue culture to start your career in science. In highly practical classes, you will prepare your chemicals, equipment and learn to use modern laboratory equipment as you undertake a wide range of analytical testing experiments. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS You must have successfully completed Year 10 of education, or equivalent. CAREER OUTCOMES After successful completion, you may wish to apply for employment opportunities as a laboratory technician or technical officer in a science-based industry. STUDY PATHWAYS After successfully completing this course, you may wish to progress directly into final year of the Diploma of Laboratory Technology or apply for entry into one of the science degrees offered at Box Hill Institute or another education provider. Laboratories may include medical testing, biological, chemical or environmental testing. In a warm and supportive environment with small class sizes, you will acquire practical scientific knowledge and technical skills in areas of aseptic techniques and microscopy, microbiology, histology, environmental testing, molecular biology and electrophoresis and chemical testing. You will learn to plan and conduct laboratory work, use application software, analyse data and report these results. You will have the opportunity to use relevant instrumentation in modern laboratories to develop your practical hands-on experience throughout your course. In the final year, you can showcase your laboratory skills to potential employers in our work placement program. CAREER OUTCOMES After successful completion, you may wish to apply for a range of employment opportunities as a technical officer, laboratory assistant, and scientific officer. Other industry options may include quality assurance in private and government laboratories such as biological, environmental or chemical testing laboratories, secondary schools, medical research and pathology laboratories and pharmaceutical R & D laboratories. STUDY PATHWAYS After successful completion, you may wish to apply for entry into the second year (if eligible) of the Bachelor of Biosecurity at Box Hill Institute, you will be offered 24 credit points the equivalent of 6 months. Alternatively, you may wish to apply for the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) at RMIT where you will be eligible to 96 credit points, equivalent to one year. BIOSECURITY Change the face of medicine, biotechnology and the environment with a career in Biosecurity. Training is run at the Biosecurity Centre of Excellence and industry placements will help you gain the all important experience needed to land your first job. BACHELOR OF BIOSECURITY SCIENCE (BBS01) Combine your interests in Agriculture, Animals and Plants with Science in a rewarding and practical career in Biosecurity. Become equipped with the knowledge to: Protect our farms, livestock and crops from pests and disease Help prevent the incursion of weeds and feral animals Protect people and the community from zoonotic diseases. This course will develop your skills and practical knowledge in the plant and animal sciences in combination with an understanding of the science and regulation of biosecurity. The Bachelor of Biosecurity Science is the only dedicated undergraduate biosecurity course offered in Australia and it is run in association with Box Hill Institute s Biosecurity Centre of Excellence. You will commence your studies with foundation studies in biology, microbiology, chemistry and research methods. Specialised subjects include: Plants and animals Anatomy and physiology Plant and animal production Animal health and diseases Plant pests and diseases Epidemiology. Biosecurity Surveillance and monitoring Risk management Legislation, regulation and policy Compliance and enforcement. Final year industry project Biosecurity industry project - a two-month industry placement to evaluate and report on biosecurity practice. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Year 12 (VTAC): You must have successfully completed your VCE or equivalent with units 3 and 4 in Mathematics (any) and a study score of at least 20 in English (any). Direct entry (Non-year 12 applicants): You must have good English language skills and a minimum of 5 years relevant employment experience. Equivalent education or other evidence of ability to successfully complete the program will be considered. You will be required to book an interview for Bachelor of Biosecurity Science. CAREER OUTCOMES After successful completion of the Bachelor of Biosecurity, you may wish to apply for a range of professional employment opportunities in industry, government or research institutions. Employment opportunities may include biosecurity compliance officer with a large retail organisation or government department specialising in agriculture, viticulture, equine or dairy, technical officer biosecurity with the federal department of agriculture, biosecurity inspections officer with a department or industry group, biosecurity policy officer, quarantine, field or extension officer with government or industry group, livestock industry: dairy, beef, equine, porcine, poultry, grains and horticulture industry and biosecurity research organisation. STUDY PATHWAYS After successful completion, you may wish to apply to study an Honours or Master s degree at any Australian university that offers a related course. The LN Support program is flexible, and provides support in classrooms and/or in group tutorials and with online activities. Students are enrolled in LN Support program units based on their Core Skills Diagnostic Test. When students have successfully completed these units, they receive a Box Hill Institute Statement of Attainment. The LN Support Program is nationally accredited course and students use their second government subsidised place for that year.
