It forms a part of the Craigavon Two-Tier system of education in which pupils transfer at eleven from primary school to all ability junior high schools and subsequently at fourteen to senior high schools; either to a senior high school (grammar) on the basis of academic selection or to the non-selective Craigavon Senior High School. The school therefore caters for Key Stage 4 pupils who transfer from the junior high schools in Lurgan, Portadown and Tandragee. The school seeks to provide pupils with a challenging and rewarding educational experience that is founded on good relationships and mutual respect between pupils and staff. As a school, we seek to develop pupils self-esteem and confidence in a secure and caring environment while catering for their different interests, aptitudes and aspirations within the framework of a balanced curriculum that is designed to equip them with the knowledge, skills and values that will enable them to play an active and constructive role in the workplace as well as their community. LOCATION The school currently operates as a single school on two sites with one Board of Governors and one Principal. Both the Lurgan and Portadown Campuses are shared with the Southern Regional College. 1

CURRICULUM The school prides itself on the delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum in which high quality vocational and technological education plays an important role. There has been significant investment in Information Communication Technology which has enabled the school to develop an extensive programme of work related learning opportunities. On the basis of guided choice, and junior high school recommendation, pupils are allocated to one of two programmes. Full GCSE programme 8/9 GCSEs or equivalents Combined GCSE/Vocational Programme 7 GCSEs or equivalents The availability of some optional GCSE subjects can vary from year to year depending on pupil numbers and preferences, but the range of subjects on offer currently includes Art and Design, Business and Communication Systems, Business Studies, Child Development, Construction, Design and Technology, English Language and Literature, French, Geography, History, Food and Nutrition, Information and Communications Technology, Learning for Life and Work, Mathematics, Motor Vehicle and Road User Studies, Physical Education, Religious Education and Science (Single and Double). A number of core subjects are compulsory for all pupils after which further subjects are selected from a number of structured option groups. Religious Education, Physical Education and Careers Education and Guidance also form an important part of the school curriculum although they are not subject to compulsory external examinations. Pupils who enrol in the Combined GCSE and Vocational Programme take five subjects at full GCSE level and two Occupational Studies Awards. Within these programmes pupils are allocated to classes using information provided by the junior high schools. It is school policy to group pupils according to their ability. EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES The school provides all pupils with the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of extracurricular activities. Pupils encouraged to participate in sports including, cricket, boys and girls hockey, netball, rugby, soccer and volleyball. The school also has a range of clubs and societies which cater for interests such as music, drama, computers, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Scripture Union, Student Council and many others. Subject support clubs also operate regularly after school. 2

CRAIGAVON SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL VICE PRINCIPAL PERSON SPECIFICATION Applicants must, at the closing date for applications, comply with the following criteria: 1 Qualifications Essential Criteria (Shortlisting criteria) Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant aided schools in Northern Ireland; Possess a degree. Desirable Criteria (possible shortlisting criteria enhancement) Preference may be given to those applicants who: Have successfully completed a professional qualification for headship or a similar post graduate qualification, in the area of educational leadership. 2 Experience Essential Criteria (Shortlisting criteria and possible further Shortlisting enhancement) Have a minimum of 8 years teaching experience in a paid capacity in post-primary education and/or equivalent experience in an affiliated educational body, within the last 10 years, as at the closing date for receipt of completed applications. Currently hold or have held within the last 5 years, AND for a minimum of 2 years; - a promoted post of at least 2 Teaching Allowance(s)*, as a Head of Department / Head of Year / Senior Teacher; and/or - a post of Vice-Principal; and/or - a post at the equivalent level within an affiliated educational body. Equivalence to be regarded as salary placement at least equal to L4 41,562 per annum on the Leadership Group Pay Spine. Demonstrable experience of managing pastoral and/or behaviour issues for a minimum of 1 year within the last 5 years. The Board of Governors reserves the right to enhance the essential criteria if necessary in order to facilitate a manageable shortlist. Applicants must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) upon taking up employment. Please note the onus is on candidates to provide sufficient detailed information on their application forms in order to demonstrate how they meet each of the criteria. Failure to do so may result in a candidate not being shortlisted since Selection Panels cannot make assumptions in the absence of essential information. 6

EDUCATION AUTHORITY CRAIGAVON SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT TO POST OF VICE PRINCIPAL 1. The person appointed must have such qualifications as may be approved by the Department of Education and must comply with all other legal conditions applicable to the post. An applicant must establish that he/she possesses the appropriate qualifications required for the post before submitting an application. Only application forms from persons who meet the terms of the post will be considered. Applicants should ensure that their application forms are completed in full and that all necessary information is included thereon to enable their eligibility for the post to be assessed. A separate Curriculum Vitae will not be considered and must not be submitted with the application form. No additional pages should be submitted with the application form. 2. The appointment is subject to the approval of the Department of Education and such terms and conditions as it may attach. 3. The appointment is also subject to the person offered the post signing an agreement in the form approved by the Department of Education. 4. The salary for the post will be in accordance with the regulations of the Department of Education. As a Group 5 school, the salary will be in the range L15 - L19 54,503-60,131 per annum (at current salary levels). The starting salary will be L17 57,237 per annum. 5. The general functions and professional duties attached to this post are set out in the attached job description which will form part of the successful candidate s contract. 6. Applications will be considered by the Board of Governors and it is anticipated that the shortlisted applicants will be invited for interview on week commencing 6 November 2017 (date to be agreed). It should be noted that the levels of qualifications and experience advertised represent only the minimum requirements. The Board of Governors may shortlist only those candidates who are deemed to have enhanced levels of qualifications and experience. Shortlisted applicants will have the opportunity to visit the school on the afternoon of Monday 16 October 2017. Following interviews the Board of Governors will make a recommendation of appointment and in accordance with paragraph 20.1 of the Teaching Appointments Scheme, the EA Membership and Teaching Appointments Committee shall consider the recommendation and shall where they adopt the recommendation, make the appointment accordingly. 7. In connection with interviews it should be noted that interviewees shall pay their own travelling expenses. 8. Applicants must not submit Inspectors Reports or extracts from them.

10. An application will not be considered unless signed by the applicant. 11. Canvassing will disqualify. Canvassing is defined as: Any approach direct or indirect by the candidate or with the knowledge or approval of the candidate to any member of the Board of Governors or the Education Authority or the Teaching Appointments Committee thereof, provided that a candidate requesting a member of the Board of Governors or the Authority to act as a referee is not deemed to be an approach within the meaning of this definition of canvassing. A personal or written request to the Principal or the Education Authority for information regarding the post will not be regarded as canvassing. 12. Applicants should NOT furnish testimonials but should supply names and address of two referees. To avoid embarrassment applicants should state on their application forms that they have obtained the prior consent of the person named as referees. 13. If a member of the Education Authority (whether or not a principal) is requested to act as a referee in connection with a teaching post: 13.1 provided he/she is not a member of either the Board of Governors or the Appointing Committee concerned he/she shall be free to act as a referee; or 13.2 if he/she is a member of either the Board of Governors or the Appointing Committee concerned he/she shall be free to act as a referee but, if he/she does, he/she should withdraw from that part of each meeting at which the appointment is under consideration. 8

CRAIGAVON SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL VICE PRINCIPAL JOB DESCRIPTION The Vice Principal in Craigavon Senior High School works closely with the Principal and other member of the Senior Leadership team, to ensure the effective running of the school and to secure improvement in all areas of school life. The Vice Principal has also a key role to play in the leadership, management and development of all staff and dealing carefully and sensitively with matters of staff welfare. PROFESSIONAL DUTIES The Education Authority requires a Vice-Principal to carry out his/her professional duties in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Employment of Teachers as stated in Schedule 3 Regulation 5 and in particular of Vice-Principals as stated in Schedule 2 Regulation 4 of the Teachers (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (NI) 1987 and 1994. In addition to normal teaching duties and existing 1987 and 1994 Regulations the Vice-Principal will be required to work under the direction of the Principal and will be a member of the Senior Leadership Team. GENERAL DUTIES 1. The education and welfare of pupils in accordance with the requirements of the Teachers (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, having due regard to the requirements of the Northern Ireland Curriculum, the school s aims, objectives and schemes of work, and any policies of the Board of Governors. 2. To assist the Principal with all issues relating to the welfare and discipline of pupils including liaison with external agencies. 3. To promote good relationships between all staff and with parents, Governors and the wider community. 4. Additional duties included in Schedule 2 of the Teachers (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987. The following duties are identified but are subject to change as the need arises; a) To assist the Principal in the day to day running of the school including: Staff cover and supervision duties, ensuring that all classes are suitably covered at all times, particularly during teacher absence; this can include the arrangement for substitute teachers. b) To deputise for or represent the Principal when required. c) To assist the Principal with whole school planning and the development of policies including the development, implementation and monitoring of the School Development Plan and all relevant statutory policies. d) To be responsible for the drawing up, monitoring and evaluation of the School s Inclusivity and Pastoral Plan and to set, monitor and evaluate appropriate targets in line with DENI benchmarking. 9

e) To manage Year Heads through the Senior Pastoral Team, ensure the appropriate development of relevant policies and offer advice to Year Heads supporting the pastoral curriculum of the school. f) As a member of the Senior Leadership Team to contribute to the discussion and decisions taken about all aspects of School Policy, including acting as secretary for all staff meetings. g) To construct, implement and evaluate the school timetable including arranging cover for absent teachers ensuring that all classes are suitably covered at all times and overseeing the provision of substitute teachers within the budget allocated for this purpose. h) To organise staff duty rotas, including early morning, cafeteria, break, lunchtime and bus duties and provide a weekly briefing to staff. i) Assisting in monitoring of LMS expenditure, including requisitions and photocopying. j) To promote the enhancement and maintenance of the school buildings and grounds. k) To update the school s Health and Safety Policy and monitor its implementation and ensure that all risk assessments are completed and updated as required. l) To acquire a working knowledge of the C2K system, complete all DENI returns and promote its effective use and development. m) Assist with the implementation of the PRSD Scheme in school. n) To act as a Curriculum Leader within the Senior Leadership Team, keep oversight of curriculum developments and their implementation in school and support Middle Managers when necessary to ensure the appropriate development of relevant policies. o) To support the SENCO as required. p) To oversee induction of new staff and mentor through Beginning Teacher and Early Professional Development, revise the Staff handbook each year and contribute to the work of the Parent Support Group. q) To take School Assemblies as required and prepare the Assembly rota. r) Teaching commitments (reduced according to the extent of management duties) to include co-ordination of an area(s) of the curriculum and fill the role of Designated Teacher for Child Protection. s) To report to the Board of Governors as appropriate. t) To assist with Attendance Monitoring of staff and return to work interviews in line with the Board s Attendance Policy. u) Any other duties that the Principal may reasonably decide to allocate from time to time. 10

The Vice Principal will have responsibility for leadership and management in the following specific areas: Staff Development As a member of the SLT to plan and manage in-service provision. As a member of the SLT to train staff and/or arrange for their appropriate training where required. Organisation Manage specific projects as required Draw up and oversee duty lists as required. Ensure that appropriate risk assessments are carried out and evacuation procedures are in place and have been practised. Assist the Principal to manage staff attendance and provide records for monthly returns as appropriate. Ensure that the school attendance registers are always up to date. Take oversight of school trips, determining appropriate levels of staff cover, ensuring that best practice is followed and that health and safety issues are complied with. Assist with monitoring and evaluation of curriculum teams Establish and develop a parent, teacher and friend association within the school. Pastoral Care Oversee the management of the pastoral care team. Take responsibility for the implementation of behaviour, pastoral care, PSHE, RSE, Anti- Bullying, Safeguarding & Child Protection and other relevant policies and practices including the involvement of outside agency support and EA staff where appropriate. Be the designated teacher for Child Protection and lead the Safeguarding Team. Act as Link Teacher for the School Council. Oversee and assist in the organising of events to support pastoral programmes for pupils and staff. Oversee the planning and administration of parents meetings. Manage the provision of home tuition on behalf of the school. Be responsible for first aid arrangements in school, managing the Pupil Care Protocol and medical inspections. Provide support and counselling for pupils which will sometimes be of a sensitive personal nature. Support and counsel staff who have been involved in stressful incidents. Oversee the management and administration of the Special Needs Code of Practice including the management of the work of the SENCO, recording and updating computerised records. Oversee the development, monitoring and evaluation of the Pastoral Teams and positive behaviour procedures including school rewards and sanctions, to ensure that each pupil is encouraged to behave in a manner which enables them to learn effectively and to achieve. Assist in monitoring the academic progress and personal, social and emotional needs of pupils. Behaviour and Inclusion Manage after school detentions and the Pupil Support facility. Leading and Managing Staff Provide high quality leadership to secure improvement; Collaborate and network with others within and beyond the school; Foster a culture of shared/ distributed leadership; Develop, empower and sustain individuals and teams; Support the development of an open, fair, equitable culture and manage conflict effectively; Support and challenge performance in order to raise standards; Work with others to lead professional development for all staff within the context of the school s development plan in order to support effective teaching and learning. Leading Learning and Teaching Cultivate enthusiasm for and commitment to the learning process; Contribute to the development of an effective learning and teaching culture; Lead and manage the self-evaluation process; work with others to analyse a range of data, interpret outcomes and plan for improvement; Ensure effective implementation of the NI Curriculum, share good practice and work with others to challenge and address pupil under-achievement. Developing the School in the Community Work with the leadership team and others to promote and present a positive image of the school within the local community and beyond; Develop strong and effective relationships with parents and the local and wider community; Assist in the development of effective channels of communication between the school and the local and wider community; Listen to, reflect and act on community feedback; Work with the Principal and others to ensure that strategic planning takes account of the richness and diversity of the school s communities and community feedback; Work closely with other relevant statutory and voluntary agencies to enhance the education of all pupils.
