BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program features two tracks: the Generic Process track and the Flexible Process track. The Generic Process track is the traditional educational approach designed for individuals with no previous nursing education or experience. The Flexible Process track allows registered nurses and licensed vocational nurses an opportunity to obtain course credit by examination. Both tracks are divided into two phases. The First Phase is comprised of 62 hours of lower-division work (liberal arts and nursing perquisites) which may be completed at any regionally accredited college or university. The Second Phase is comprised of 60 hours of upper-division work in the nursing major and is completed at the School of Nursing. The following courses are required for students who plan to obtain the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Nursing. All courses are subject to approval by the School of Nursing when the student enters. No student may enroll in upper-division nursing courses until he/she has completed the 62 hours of prerequisite courses and has been formally accepted. Page 2 Physician assistant courses are offered on the campus of The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio (HSC), the Laredo Campus Extension in Laredo, and at clinical sites throughout South Texas. The curriculum includes interdisciplinary courses with medical students. Coursework is completed over seven consecutive semesters beginning with the fall semester of year one and ending with graduation in May thirty-three months later. Students spend their final year in clinical training and are required to do at least two rural or remote rotations. Admission to the Physician Assistant Studies Program is highly competitive. Selection is based on objective criteria that reflect leadership, work/health care experience, community service, written communication skills and a commitment to the PA profession, south Texas, and primary care. Composite GPA and race/ethnicity/diversity factors are also considered. Bilingual skills, especially Spanish, are considered valuable. A small number of applicants will be invited for a personal interview. Final selection will be based on an overall assessment of the applicant, including the personal interview and an essay written at the time of the interview.
