Introduction FPA Australia offers the following national qualifications: PRM20406 Certificate II in Asset Maintenance (Fire Protection Equipment) for fire protection technicians responsible for non trade installation and regular servicing of fire protection equipment and systems. PRM30406 Certificate III in Asset Maintenance (Fire Protection Equipment) for fire protection technicians responsible for installation, commissioning and complex servicing of fire protection systems, or supervision of fire protection services work. Our training and assessment is available nationally and is designed for you to work through at your own pace, and at a time and place that suits you and your employer. You do not need to attend classes. Sometimes, if you have sufficient experience and current ability in a unit of competency you can bypass the learning and go directly to the assessment. This process is known as Recognition of Prior Learning and is explained further in this guidebook. Remote Assessment process overview If you would like to be assessed for an FPA Australia course, or any unit from a course, but cannot find a suitable FPA Australia registered workplace assessor you may wish to organise a remote assessment. This is a process where you gather or produce evidence of knowledge and practical skills at your workplace and send it to FPA Australia to be assessed. For each unit FPA Australia will provide you with: a set of practical skills assessment checklists a set of knowledge questions. After FPA Australia receives your assessment evidence we will arrange for one of our registered workplace assessors to assess it. If the assessor identifies any gaps in your skills or knowledge, or has queries about your evidence, they will contact you. They may request that you provide further evidence or undertake additional activities, for example a phone interview or extra training. Steps in the process Step 1 Choose an observer Step 2 Prepare for your practical assessment Step 3 Do your practical assessment Step 4 Do you knowledge assessment Step 5 Obtain a letter of support from your observer Step 6 Prepare your assessment evidence Step 7 Obtain a statutory declaration Step 8 Submit your evidence to FPA Australia Remote Assessment Overview March 2011 Page 1

Note: A few units only have a knowledge assessment. If you are being assessed for one of these units you will only be sent Part C: Underpinning Knowledge Written Assessment. In this situation you may disregard Steps 2 and 3. Step 1: Choose an observer Organise for an experienced person to observe and verify that you have undertaken your assessment activities safely and correctly. Depending on your circumstances, this person may be: your supervisor your trainer a mentor a colleague who already has the units of competency in which you wish to be assessed. Your observer will be required to: observe your practical skills demonstrations complete the Observer(s) section at the beginning of each set of practical assessment exercises and knowledge questions complete the checklist for every practical assessment exercise by: o ticking the boxes under the columns C (competent) or NYC (not yet competent) o adding their name and signature provide a letter of support (see page 5 ) Important: Before you commence your assessment contact FPA Australia to confirm the suitability of your observer. Step 2: Prepare for your practical assessment: Check the items in each checklist Before you undertake your practical assessment: read the checklists in Part A: Practical Assessment so that you know what to do for each assessment exercise review the information in the relevant participant guide check whether there are any other requirements that you may need to take into account, for example: o o o company or manufacturer documentation such as system specifications, approvals listings, maintenance manuals Australian Standards, regulations, codes of practice legal or industry requirements, including OHS policies and procedures. Remote Assessment Overview March 2011 Page 2

Note: All assessments are open book assessments. You may use any written resource normally available at the workplace, including those suggested above, during your practical assessment. Organise resources for each exercise Read the checklists for each assessment exercise to identify the resources you will need. Physical resources Physical resources could include: a workshop equipped for the assessment exercises that you will be doing, including all necessary tools, equipment and spare parts personal protective equipment workplace documents that relate to the activity such as procedures, checklists, forms, permits reference materials (see Check requirements for each exercise above) if the exercise is a practical skills demonstration, resources to record the demonstration are need. For example resources with the ability to produce digital imaging, record it such as a digital video camera. Human resources If the exercise is a practical skills demonstration you will need to make arrangements for: your observer to watch you undertake the demonstration someone to digitally record your demonstration. Photocopy of your current licence with a picture on it along with a statutory declaration stating that it is you in the photo. Step 3: Do your practical assessment Practical assessment exercises are generally one of the following types: an exercise that requires a practical skills demonstration an exercise that requires documentary evidence an exercise that covers ancillary skills. You should be able to identify which type an exercise is by reading its checklist. Practical skills demonstration If an exercise requires a practical skills demonstration you must demonstrate the items in the exercise to your observer and record your demonstration. You and your observer must complete the checklist for the exercise. If you wish, you may attach supplementary evidence, such as relevant workplace documents, that help to show that you have the practical skills that you have demonstrated. Remote Assessment Overview March 2011 Page 3

RECORDING THE DEMONSTRATION FPA Australia will accept any of the following formats: video on a DVD Important: Accompany the video with a brief explanation of what was done at each stage of the demonstration, clearly showing the sequence of the activity. SUPPLEMENTARY EVIDENCE FOR PRACTICAL SKILLS DEMONSTRATIONS When preparing the evidence of your practical skills demonstrations consider whether you have any supplementary evidence that could help to show that you have the practical skills that you have demonstrated. Here are some examples. Documents relating to your work experience and employment such as: records, reports, checklists and forms that you have written or completed job description or duty statement your résumé or CV references from supervisors testimonials from customers. Documents relating to training that you have undertaken such as: awards or certificates records of results records of attendance or participation descriptions of training programs that you have undertaken. Other evidence such as: a map or chart of work experience which lists the duties in each job and the equipment used in that job pages copied from a work diary or log book feedback forms and surveys of team members or customers company awards, performance reviews. Important: Supplementary evidence is optional. Only include supplementary evidence if: it is relevant to a practical skills demonstration it is your own work or about you and your work. Documentary evidence Remote Assessment Overview March 2011 Page 4

If an exercise requires you to provide documentary evidence you must gather and/or complete the items specified in the exercise. You and your observer must complete the checklist for the exercise. Ancillary skills Ancillary skills are the skills you must have so that you can undertake particular tasks or activities. For example, in order to complete a maintenance schedule on a fire extinguisher you must be able to use tools and equipment correctly. Using tools and equipment correctly is an ancillary skill. Most assessment exercises that list ancillary skills have the heading Demonstrate specific skills needed to achieve the performance criteria. You do not need to demonstrate ancillary skills separately, however you and your observer must still complete the checklist for the exercise and your observer must confirm in their letter of support (see page 5) that they have observed you using these skills. Your observer may have seen you using the ancillary skills when you undertake other practical assessment exercises or in the course of your day to day work. Either situation is acceptable for the purpose of confirming that you have the specified ancillary skills. Step 4: Do your knowledge assessment Answer the questions in Part C: Underpinning Knowledge Written Assessment without the assistance of anyone else, including your observer. Note: All assessments are open book assessments. You may use any written resource normally available at the workplace during your knowledge assessment. Step 5: Obtain a letter of support Ask your observer to write a letter of support to FPA Australia to confirm that: you have undertaken your practical assessment safely and correctly you have completed the knowledge assessment without the assistance of others you have the required ancillary skills (if they have been specified in practical assessment exercise(s). The letter must: be on the observer s company letterhead be dated be signed by the observer include the observer s work title e.g. Supervisor contain the following wording: I (observer name) certify that: (participant name) has demonstrated the practical assessment exercises for (list unit code[s] and title[s]) safely and correctly (participant name) has answered each underpinning knowledge question without the assistance of others Remote Assessment Overview March 2011 Page 5

(participant name) has demonstrated the ancillary skills listed in (list relevant unit code(s) and practical assessment exercise number). Your observer may need to adjust the wording of the letter to account for variations in your assessment. For example, you may have been assessed in unit(s) that do not have a practical assessment or that do not have an assessment exercise for ancillary skills. Important: Include the original of the letter with your evidence and keep a copy for your own records. Step 6: Prepare your assessment evidence Use the following checklist to help you prepare your evidence for each unit being assessed. Practical assessment Participant Information: Part A completed by participant and observer For assessment exercises requiring a practical skills demonstration: Checklist completed by participant and observer Record (video) of demonstration attached to checklist Brief explanation of what was done at each stage of the demonstration, clearly showing the sequence of the activity, attached to checklist Supplementary evidence, if relevant, attached to checklist For assessment exercises requiring documentary evidence: Checklist completed by participant and observer Documentary evidence attached to checklist For assessment exercises covering ancillary skills: Checklist completed by participant and observer Letter of support confirms participant has demonstrated ancillary skills Name of participant added to each item of evidence Unit code (e.g. PRMPFES04B) and number of practical assessment exercise added to each item of evidence Copy of completed Part A: Practical Assessment and evidence kept for participant s records Knowledge assessment Participant Information: Part C completed by participant and observer All questions answered by participant Name of participant added to each sheet of questions and answers Copy of completed Part C: Underpinning Knowledge Written Assessment kept for participant s records Letter of support Letter of support from observer (must be the original) included in evidence Remote Assessment Overview March 2011 Page 6
