Opportunities to earn money and gain valuable work experience before graduation. One 6-month co-op available in all majors; many offer a 3 co-op option. In 2010 the average 6-month co-op salary was nearly $16,000. International students can fully participate in the Drexel Co-op. Intensive English program 11- and 6-week terms year round Six levels from Beginning to Advanced Successful students complete one level each term At least 18 hours of classes per week Program Highlights Placement tests to assess Speaking and Writing levels at the start of each term Orientation program before classes start to help new students learn about ELC classes and activities Their teachers, their classmates, and the ELC staff Drexel University and Philadelphia Living in the U.S. and staying safe and healthy Certificates for successful completion of each full or half term Tutoring sessions available free of charge Small classes for individualized attention Average class size is 10-12 students Largest classes have 15-16 Teachers with Master s degrees in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) or related fields. Lots of experience teaching in the U.S. and abroad. Curriculum Our flexible curriculum lets instructors tailor classes to their students needs. Core Courses 15 hours per week in the morning or afternoon Listening/Speaking classes focus on listening competence, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, and help students develop their communication skills and abilities. Reading/Writing classes help students improve reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammatical structure and mechanics, mastery of paragraph and essay format, idea development, and writing process. Special Topic Courses 3 hours per week, Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday Scheduled between morning and afternoon classes Students choose from a list of topics according to level and interest. Classes concentrate on specific skills or test preparation.

Examples include Vocabulary Development, Oral Presentations, English for Everyday Life, Advanced Grammatical Analysis, TOEFL Preparation or IELTS Preparation. Global Business English Global Business English/Pre-MBA (GLOBE) program Designed to meet the needs of prospective and pre-mba students as well as business professionals. For participants with a university degree who place into ELC level 4 Listening/ Speaking AND Reading/Writing (or higher). Special Features Lecture opportunities at Drexel s LeBow College of Business and Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship Prospective MBA workshop on topics like choosing an MBA program, writing an application essay, or preparing for an interview Monthly networking receptions sponsored by the International Visitors Council of Philadelphia MBA class observations arranged each term 21 hours of classes per week The Language of Business Information is a modular integrated skills course that focuses on concepts and key vocabulary related to specific topics such as marketing, finance, international business, and human resources. Topics vary each term; all modules are covered over a 2-term sequence. The course uses case studies and current business news from authentic sources and includes research and visits to local businesses. Academic Reading/Writing classes emphasize essay writing, advanced academic reading, research skills, and strategies for graduate level coursework. Special Topic courses: GLOBE students can choose TOEFL/GMAT Preparation or two other advanced level topics such as Oral Presentations and Vocabulary Development. International Gateway begins in the Fall term and prepares students to begin fulltime undergraduate study at Drexel the following Fall. Applicants must: Be academically qualified for admission to Drexel University. We do not pre-screen or offer evaluations of academic qualifications without a complete application. International Gateway is not designed for transfer students. Have standardized English proficiency test scores in the following range: TOEFL score from 53 to 70 IELTS score from 5.0 to 5.5 Students with higher scores should apply to directly to Drexel University for undergraduate admission. Students with lower scores are welcome to apply for the Intensive English program at Drexel ELC.

American Cultural Connections A unique program that encourages and facilitates contact between International Gateway and American university students through a wide range of activities: Service learning opportunities such as volunteering at a food bank, senior center, or other community organization. Peer-guided course visitations that match Gateway and Drexel students for classroom visits to learn the culture of the U.S. classroom. Family guest activities that pair Gateway students with Drexel and other community families who wish to host international students for special occasions. International guest receptions where Gateway students are recognized as welcome guests at Drexel and on other university campuses. Academic course linkages through Gateway courses with American students seeking intercultural communication experiences.

Apply for International Gateway Applicants who meet the admission criteria (see Who Can Enter? on the previous page) should follow the International Gateway Application Instructions on the ELC website to: Complete the online International Gateway Application. Use World Education Services to authenticate and evaluate your secondary school transcripts. Pay the $100 application fee. Make your Housing Choice Because different students prefer different lifestyles, several types of housing are available. Reservations must be made directly with the housing providers. Links are available on the Housing page of the ELC website. Depending on the term, options include: Drexel Residence Halls: On-campus accommodations in double rooms or suites are available on a limited basis. University meal plan and immunizations required. Right at Home Homestay: Students live in an American home where they can practice English and learn about American culture. The Axis: A luxury student residence with a reasonable price, just minutes from campus. Meal plans available. International House: A large dormitorystyle residence providing private bedrooms with shared bath and kitchen facilities, near the Drexel campus.
