The following information concerns the GSID Master s Program for the Academic Year 2012. Those who meet one of the following qualifications are eligible to apply: (1) Have graduated from an accredited Japanese university or will graduate by the end of March, 2012. (2) Have been conferred a Bachelor s degree according to Article 104(4 1) of the School Education Law or will be conferred a Bachelor s degree by the end of March, 2012. (3) Have completed at least 16 years of formal education in their home country or will have completed 16 years of formal education by the end of March, 2012. (4) Have completed up to 16 years of formal education in Japan through correspondence education managed by a foreign school or another recognized educational institution or will complete 16 years of formal education by the end of March, 2012. (5) Have graduated from a university in Japan that is a recognized university belonging to the system of higher education of a foreign country and is approved by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (only those who have completed at least 16 years of formal education) or will graduate by the end of March, 2012. (6) Have graduated from a Post-secondary Course of a Specialized Training College recognized by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (limited to applicants who have attended for at least 4 years, and to those who have fulfilled requirements as approved by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), or will complete their degree by the end of March, 2012. (7) Have been approved by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Ministry Notice No. 5 of 1953). (8) Have been recognized by GSID as those who were on the register at an accredited Japanese university for no less than 3 years or completed at least 15 years of formal education in their home country and received necessary units of credit with good grades or graduated from a university in Japan that is a recognized university belonging to the system of higher education of a foreign country and is approved by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (only those who have completed at least 15 years of formal education) or expected to do so by the end of March, 2012. (9) Have been recognized by GSID based on individual screening of qualifications as being comparable in academic ability to a Japanese university graduate, and of an age not less than 22 by the end of March, 2012. For those sending applications by (registered) mail, applications MUST reach the office by 16:00 on August 19, 2011. Any applications received after this date and time will not be considered for processing. The following documents should be submitted to the Educational Affairs Division for the Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSID administrative office). The original forms are provided in this pamphlet. Please fill out and send in. Please type or write clearly using black ink. (Please use A4 sized paper, and write or type your statement of purpose and research proposal in approximately 600 words in English or 1,500 characters in Japanese. Clearly specify the title of your research topic.) (4) Statement concerning applicant s working and/or research experience. (Submission is optional.)

(5) Photograph Card, Examinee s Registration Card and Receipt Forms: Attach photo (4cm 5cm) taken within the last 3 months. Please write your name on the two Receipt Forms. (Forms provided) (6) Self-addressed Envelopes: Please use the two envelopes provided in this pamphlet with stamps worth 360 yen attached to each. If Japanese stamps are not available, please send instead 6 International Return Coupons which are available at post offices. (7) Contact Address Labels: Please fill out these forms, marked, with your contact address. (Labels provided) (8) Letter of Recommendation (submission is optional): Must be written and sealed by the applicant s academic advisor from the university s/he attended. A letter from your present supervisor or a self-recommendation is also acceptable. (9) Official academic transcripts from each school, university, or professional school attended after graduating from high school, whether or not a degree was awarded. (10) Certificate of Graduation, or Certificate of Prospective Graduation issued by your present university. (11) Applicants without Japanese nationality must submit a photocopy of the page of their valid passport showing the passport number and the applicant s photograph. Those applicants who are currently residing in Japan must also submit a photocopy of Alien Registration Card (both sides). (12) A photocopy of certificate of English or Japanese language proficiency, if any. The applicants of DID DICOS who apply for the exemption from the Foreign Language Examination should submit a copy of their official scores of TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS taken within the last two years (see notes 2 and 3 on page 6, and specify it in the Application Form. Institutional scores are not acceptable. If you are an employee of an organization, you are requested to submit a letter of consent from the head of your organization or, in place of that, a letter of self-responsibility after you have passed examination. If you have questions regarding any of the information above, please contact the Educational Affairs Division for the Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSID administrative office). (1) Items (1)-(12) should be completed and submitted to the Educational Affairs Division for the Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSID administrative office). In addition to these documents an examination fee of 30,000 yen is required(non-refundable). In Japan, please use a Japanese Postal Money Order but Do Not fill in anything. The students funded by the Japanese government ( Monbukagakusho scholarship students ) do not need to pay the examination fee. Such students need to submit the certificate of their scholarship unless they are currently enrolled in Nagoya University. (2) If items (9) and (10) are sent directly from your home university, please make sure that those items reach the Educational Affairs Division for the Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSID administrative office) during the filing period. (3) For those who fall under category (8) or (9) in the Application Requirements, the following paper work MUST reach the Educational Affairs Division for the Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSID administrative office) by August 3, 2011 (Wednesday) in order to receive the Eligibility Screening for the Examination. Results of the Eligibility Screening for the Examination will be sent to applicants by August 10 2011(Wednesday). Applicants can be exempted from taking the Foreign Language Examination by submitting their copy of official TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS test score 2 3 Essay Writing Use of dictionaries is not permitted. Essays should be written in Japanese or English. Essay questions are intended to test applicants basic knowledge of issues concerning international development and cooperation. Essay Writing This essay should be written in Japanese or English. This section is to check your understanding of the basic elements in international communication. Use of dictionaries is not permitted. Foreign Language Japanese applicants must choose one of the following languages: English, German, French, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, or Korean. Foreign applicants must choose Japanese language. Graduate School of Economics Both foreign and Japanese applicants use at most 2 dictionaries. Use of Electronic dictionaries and the like is, however, not permitted. Notes: Foreign applicants include not only those who meet Application Requirement (3), but also those who have graduated from Japanese universities and have completed at least 12 years of formal education outside Japan. Depending on your educational background, you might be assigned to take the exam for Japanese applicants, not for Foreign applicants. TOEFL Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEIC Test of English for International Communication IELTS International English Language Testing System To be considered for admission, a minimum overall TOEFL score of 550(paper-based) or 79(internet-based), a TOEIC score of 730, or an IELTS score of 6.0(should include Academic Reading and Academic Writing) is required.
