RE: AQUACAMPS Summer WEX Placement The Vancouver Aquarium is currently recruiting 90 Full Time, and 25 Part Time students for our Marine Educator Aqua Camps Work Experience Placement. As a Work Experience Student, you will be: This placement will provide an excellent opportunity for students to gain experience working with children in an educational setting, work on their communication and leadership skills, develop a sense of teamwork and explore career options. Title: Marine Educator Aqua Camps Work Experience Placement Department: Point Persons: Key Dates: Placement Dates: Children s Programs Nicole Straughan Mandatory Training: all students must attend both days 1. Core Training (For Groups A & B): Sun. June 19 th, from 2. Core Training (For Groups C & D): Sun. July 17 th, from 3. Core Training (For Group E): Sun. July 31 st, from 4. Specific Training (For Groups A & B): Sat. June 25 th, from 9:30am-3:00pm 5. Specific Training (For Groups C & D & E): Sat. July 23 rd, from 9:30am-3:00pm. Placement Dates: (18 full time and 5 part time students/group) Group A: July 4-8, 11-15. Group B: July 14 (Shadow Day), 18-22, 25-29. Shifts: Description of Volunteer Opportunity: Full Time Shift = Monday Friday, 8:30am -3:30pm Part Time Shift = Monday Friday, 2:00pm 6:00pm Assist with the preparation, delivery and clean-up of Spring Camp program. Enhance participants experience through group activities using hands-on, interactive activity stations and props. Help supervise and lead small groups of children during play and gallery exploration time. As work experience students, candidates will work with a team of staff and volunteers to activate the Vancouver Aquarium s galleries this summer. Their days will be filled with fun and varied tasks and they will have the opportunity to engage, amaze and inspire thousands of guests of all ages and from all around the world! Description of Volunteer Opportunity: Interact with visitors and answer questions in the Discover Rays (primary task) Supervise Face Painting (primary task) Educate the public with stories and props in all galleries (primary task) Assist staff cleaning the Goldcorp 4D Theatre Assist staff with visitor surveys Assist staff with office tasks, including laundry and some light cleaning Complete self-led educational modules to increase knowledge of aquatic life ** subject to necessity Skills Preferred: Outgoing, enthusiastic and self-motivated Students currently in Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. Genuine interest in working with the public Strong communications skills, including excellent spelling/grammar and average typing skills. Experience with delivering excellent customer service Second language an asset Ability to learn quickly from self led activities, studying written documents, and some group activity work. Please Note: This is not an animal handling position. Students will have limited contact with marine animals. Please Note: Placement dates are mandatory. When applying, candidates must clearly note any dates they cannot attend. Candidates will not be considered for a placement if they are unavailable for more than three dates within that placement.
