The School is a member of the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centres, Universities and National Academies, the Association of Schools of Public Health in the uropean Region, and the Consortium of Universities for Global Health. 2 The Library & Archives Service The primary role of the Library & Archives Service (LAS) is to support the School in its mission to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide, working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice. The Library & Archives Service seeks to provide excellent information-related services, resources and support to the School s staff and students, and to contribute to a creative and supportive working environment in line with the School s values. The Library & Archives Service also welcomes external researchers and visitors who wish to consult its specialist collections. The Library & Archives Service provides an excellent standard of customer service in the delivery of services to users, and offers an extensive programme of information skills teaching and support. It facilitates access to a comprehensive collection of printed and electronic material in the fields of 1

public and global health, and provides support for open access publishing within the School. The archives of the School date from the mid-nineteenth century and consist of correspondence and personal papers of scientific, medical and global health professionals. The service also provides a records management service and support for research data management within the School. The Library & Archives Service organogram is attached. This post is part of the User Support & Information Services Team, one of three sections within the Library & Archives Service. Within this wider team the responsibilities of the post include staffing the nquiries Desk at the weekends and on bank holidays, provision of support to users, and assisting with projects in support of the service as demand dictates, particularly in the area of Information Services, but also in the areas of User Services, Collection Services & Research Publications as necessary. 3 The Post The post is based in the Library & Archives Service led by the Head of Library & Archives Service. The post is based within the User Support & Information Services Team managed by the User Support Services Librarian, and reports to the Assistant Librarian (Information Services). The post holder is required to work 12.00-17.00 on Saturday and 11.00-17.00 on Sunday for 38 weekends during term time. They will not usually be required to work during vacations or for the four week period of the summer term immediately following exam dates (usually in early June). In addition, the post holder is required to work 11.00-17.00 on the Spring Bank Holiday Monday (late May) and Summer Bank Holiday Monday (August). There may be occasions when members of staff are approached to work at other times in order to cover for colleagues who are off sick or on leave. The post is part-time permanent (0.236 FT). Duties commence as soon as possible after interview. 2 days training (9.30am-5.30pm on a weekday) will be arranged following appointment. 2

4 Job Description Job Title: Library Assistant (Weekends) Department: Library & Archives Service Faculty/Professional Service: Professional Services Location: London Reports to: Assistant Librarian (Information Services) Responsible for: N/A Full Time/Part Time/Casual: Part-time permanent Hours: 0.236 FT Grade: PSP 3 Overall Purpose of the Job The Library Assistant (Weekends) is one of two part-time Library Assistants who staff the Library at weekends and on bank holidays and who undertake various projects in support of the service, reporting to the Assistant Librarian (Information Services). The Library Assistant (Weekends) is responsible for supporting and assisting all aspects of the delivery of library services, ensuring an excellent standard of customer service. The Library Assistant (Weekends) is responsible for staffing the nquiries Desk, and for the provision of support to users. The post holder works alongside the other Library Assistant (Weekends), and is responsible for opening and occasionally closing the Library at the appointed time. The Library Assistant (Weekends) assists with projects in support of the service as demand dictates, particularly in the area of Information Services, but also in the areas of User Services, Collection Services & Open Access as necessary. The post holder assists with the collation of statistics as required, and with the provision of signage, user guides and web information. The Library Assistant (Weekends) actively engages with users to promote the service and to gather feedback, and actively contributes to the development of the service. The post holder participates in staff meetings and events, staff rotas and nquiries Desk duties, and induction training as required. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Communications Communicating regularly with relevant School staff and external institutions/ organisations in the operation of library services Designing and producing signage, guides and web information for Library users Communicating daily with the Library Team, and with Library users in the course of answering enquiries received in person, by telephone, via email and social media Providing written and verbal reports to the Assistant Librarian (Information Services) and User Support Services Librarian on matters relating to library services Promoting the Library services and collections to members of the School and beyond Teamwork and Motivation Working with the Assistant Librarian (Information Services), User Support Services Librarian and other Library & Archives Service staff to ensure the successful delivery of library 3

The salary will be on the Professional Support Pathway Grade 3 scale in the range 24,761-28,053 per annum pro-rata inclusive. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this, there are discretionary Director s Days. Membership of the Pension Scheme is also available. 5

The post holder is required to work 38 weekends during term time, 12.00-17.00 on Saturday and 11.00-17.00 on Sunday.
