Nurturing New Avenues in University Education among South Asian Countries: Challenges & Prospects 16 th & 17 th October, 2013, About the Conference: The conference on Nurturing New Avenues in University Education among South Asian Countries: Challenges & Prospects is to make an assessment of higher education systems of South Asian countries in terms of structure, access, quality, equity, resources, and contribution of private enterprise. South Asian countries have collective features, such as geographic and climatic conditions, and share issues concerning the socioeconomic, cultural, and educational advancement of their people. Higher education affects every area of national development and deserves requisite attention. All South Asian countries have a similar higher education structure, including entry qualifications and age, duration of courses, and instructional management system. The pressing demand for higher education and a strong desire for foreign qualification by youth are common issues. Opportunities are limited, with gross enrolment ratios varying among South Asian countries from less than 5 percent to 10 percent. The participation of women is not more than 40 percent in any South Asian country, and the quality of education is inadequate. Spending on education ranges from 2 percent to 4 percent of the gross national product (GNP), which is less than UNESCO standards for developing nations. Private enterprise, a recent phenomenon, limits its role market-oriented, professional, and technical education. It is high time for South Asian countries to evolve common educational forums and collaborative strategies to deal with the situation. In the present century the scenario in higher education has changed drastically and in the export and import of higher education, there is a cut throat competition, so the cost-benefit analysis has become an essential part of management of higher education of any country. From international mobility of students the globe as a village concept will be closer to be true, but import system may also cause problems for indigenous culture, institutions, economy and to the overall value system. Thus balance in approach is the need of the hour so that basic infrastructure of any country does not collapse but continues to be world competitive in nature. Issues to be discussed: 1. Endeavouring Higher Education Policies in the South Asian countries for making a Knowledge Society 2. Impact of Global Networking in Higher Education Institutions 3. Leveraging of existing competencies in IT, Telecom, Bio- technology, Financial services and Management 4. Conserving Regional literatures, Cultural Diversity, Heritage and Unified understanding 5. Natural Disasters Management as part of curricula
Though in the era of liberalization, educational experts are taking transnational movement of education as Brain Circulation instead of calling it Brain Drain, but they are much aware that now higher education is not the basket of Social Sector and if the region wants to be strong it has to open its field of education to all. Thus, expansion of higher education is a public demand as well as it is the demand of the time.
