I've loved playing the last 20 years at PHBC (nearly!) and love you all so much. Love to all and looking forward to 2017. Melanie Martin Pastor Randy Janet and I had already decided that if or when Glynda Turner had surgery we would want to be there to support her, Mike, and the family. Word came Monday that the surgery would indeed be done Wednesday. Immediately, I began making provision for us to be able to go to Dallas. Our quarterly business meeting was originally scheduled for January 25, the fourth Wednesday of the month. However, our plans were to be in Georgia (I have meetings in Atlanta next Monday and Tuesday). So, we moved the meeting to January 18 in order for me to moderate. Now, with my absence both Wednesdays, it is not necessary to have the business meeting early. We are moving it to the original date and Joni Lee, Deacon chair, will guide the meeting. Tommy Havens will lead the MidWeek service this week. I am grateful to both for their help and leadership. Our plans are to go to Georgia from Dallas. Jason Smith will be preaching this Sunday, and I encourage you to be present to support him. Jason serves as a Congregational Engagement Specialist with the Alliance of Baptists, working collaboratively with partner congregations and Alliance leadership on development strategy and congregational relations. He is an adjunct professor in the school of social sciences at his alma mater, Ouachita Baptist University. Previously, he served as Director of Youth and Ministry Assistant at Calvary Baptist Church, Washington, DC. While in DC, he studied at Wesley Theological Seminary ('14, M. Div.), where he focused on urban ministry. He was ordained at Calvary Baptist Church in June 2014, serves on the board of directors of Interfaith Arkansas, and the Executive Committee of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty. Jason grew up in Costa Rica where his parents served as Baptist missionaries, and continues to be involved in special projects collaborating with communities of faith in Latin America; he co-led an intercultural immersion and housing construction project in El Salvador in 2012, has served as a New Testament Instructor with churches in the Kuna Yala province of Panama through the Latino Network of Virginia Baptists in 2014, and has represented the Alliance of Baptists on official visits at the Fraternity of Baptist Churches of Cuba in 2015 and 2016. Jason and his wife Myra live in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where Myra is an Assistant Professor of History at Ouachita Baptist University.
United through Christ in Solidary and Support." Reading Jason's bio above shows you why they are so passionate about their work. This is a wonderful family, they have strong Arkansas roots, and I'm proud to call them friends... and am grateful that Jason is able to be here with you this Sunday. Marty I wanted to let you know Marathon Sunday is approaching. This year it falls on March 5th. The Little Rock Marathon organizers would like to help make the whole event safer and are requesting that ALL volunteers sign up. And as an Official "Entertainment" and Cheering Venue, we are all technically volunteers participating in the marathon! The point of signing up is so that they have a way to contact you if something like bad weather or a danger on the course causes a safety risk to us and to runners. I encourage you to sign up with as much real information as you feel comfortable giving so that we can be in the know come Marathon Day. The website is here: http://littlerockmarathon.com/volunteers/ When you get to the page, click on "Volunteer Today" This is the correct page.
Scroll down and select "Course Entertainment Groups" as your volunteer "duty" Keep scrolling down until you get to the form. (Be honest with things like how to contact you on race day. If you are uncomfortable with giving information like your birth date, give them a date that will prove you are not a minor.)
Yes, you are volunteering with a group. That group is PHBC. Look for the name and select it.
