5031A GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS (FOR THE GRADUATING CLASSES OF 2009, 2010, 2011) The Glendale Union High School District diploma is designed to satisfy the graduation requirements established by the State Board of Education and those of the Glendale Union High School District Governing Board, and provides students with a strong foundation for success in adult life. Meeting these requirements will result in a high school diploma, but may not satisfy all requirements for acceptance into a college or university. Twenty (20) total credits are required for the Glendale Union High School District diploma. The student and his/her parents are encouraged to check the admission requirements of any college or university the student wishes to attend. Specific courses that satisfy requirements for the Glendale Union High School District diploma are as follows: 4 Credits of Language Arts that must include: 1 Credit of English 1-2 1 Credit of English 3-4 1 Credit of English 5-6 1 Credit of English 7-8 * * Or the approved ELL sequence 3 Credits of Social Studies that must include: 1 Credit of World History and Geography/Arizona Geography 1 Credit of United States/Arizona History 1/2 Credit of United States Government/Arizona Government 1/2 Credit of Economics 2 Credits of Science (one credit of which must be a lab science) 1 Credit of Thinking Science* 1 Credit of Biology* *Required of all students unless exempted to move into a higher-level Science 2 Credits of Mathematics 1 Credit of Algebra I* to be taken during the freshman year 1 Credit of Geometry* to be taken following successful completion of Algebra I 1 Credit of Fine Arts/Performing Arts or Career and Technical Education (CTE) This requirement can be satisfied by successfully completing two semesters (1/2 credit each) to be selected from the approved list of District courses which fulfill the state graduation requirements for fine arts or CTE. This requirement can also be satisfied by successfully completing two semesters of a fine arts subject as defined by the Arizona Board of Regents. 1 Credit of Physical Education 7 Elective credits to be selected from the course offerings approved by this District Students transferring from other schools will be eligible to graduate if they meet the requirements of this District.

ENDORSED DIPLOMA (FOR THE GRADUATING CLASSES OF 2009, 2010, 2011) A student in the Glendale Union High School District may pursue a Glendale Union High School District endorsement on his/her transcript and diploma, which indicates the student has exceeded the Glendale Union High School District and State requirements for graduation. It also indicates that the student has met or exceeded prerequisites for entering any one of Arizona s three state universities, provided he/she maintains a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in each of the following six core areas: Language Arts, Social Studies, Lab Science, Mathematics, Foreign Language and Fine Arts. Students opting for an endorsement will be required to complete twenty-three (23) credits of study and maintain a 3.0 grade point average or rank in the upper 25% of their class. STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE SEAL The Glendale Union High School District has provided the opportunity for all students to receive a "Standard of Excellence" seal on their diplomas. The "Standard of Excellence" seal will be placed on the diploma of each student who maintains an overall honor point average of 4.20. This honor point average will be computed at the end of seven semesters and will reflect all high school level course work taken up to that time.

ADVANCED AND HONORS DIPLOMAS (BEGINNING WITH THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2013) A student in the Glendale Union High School District may pursue a Glendale Union High School District ADVANCED DIPLOMA or HONORS DIPLOMA, which indicates the student has exceeded the Glendale Union High School District and state requirements for graduation. It also indicates that the student has met or exceeded prerequisites for entering any one of Arizona s three state universities, provided he/she maintains a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in each of the following six core areas: Language Arts, Social Studies, Lab Science, Mathematics, Foreign Language and Fine Arts. Students opting for an ADVANCED DIPLOMA or HONORS DIPLOMA will be required to meet the requirements set forth on the following pages. ADVANCED DIPLOMA The ADVANCED DIPLOMA requires a student to earn twenty-three (23) total credits. Additionally, a student must maintain a grade point average of 2.75 or rank in the upper 25% of his/her class at the end of seven semesters. An ADVANCED DIPLOMA indicates the student has met the prerequisites for entering any one of Arizona s three state universities. Specific courses that satisfy requirements for an ADVANCED DIPLOMA are as follows: 4 credits of Language Arts that must include: 1 credit of English 7-8* *or the approved ELL sequence 1/2 credit of economics 3 credits of Science (one credit of which must be a lab Science) 1 credit of Thinking Science* 1 credit of Biology* 1 additional credit of Science * Required of all students unless exempted to move into a higher-level Science 4 credits of Mathematics 1 credit of Algebra I * to be taken during the freshman year 1 credit of Geometry * to be taken following successful completion of Algebra I 1 credit of Algebra II or equivalent * 2 credits of Foreign Language (must be two years of the same foreign language) 1 credit of Fine Arts This requirement can be satisfied by successfully completing two semesters (1/2 credit each) to be selected from the list of Fine Arts subjects as defined by the Arizona Board of Regents. 5 elective credits to be selected from the course offerings approved by this District

HONORS DIPLOMA (BEGINNING WITH THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2013) The HONORS DIPLOMA requires a student to earn twenty-four (24) credits. additionally, a student must successfully complete a minimum of six honors/ap credits with four of the six credits taken during his/her junior and senior year; maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or rank in the upper 25% of his/her class at the end of seven semesters; and obtain a score of exceeds on at least two of the state-mandated tests (AIMS). An HONORS DIPLOMA indicates the student has met the prerequisites for entering any one of Arizona s three state universities. Specific courses that satisfy requirements for an HONORS DIPLOMA are as follows: 4 credits of Language Arts that must include: 1 credit of English 7-8* *or the approved ELL sequence 1/2 credit of Economics 3 credits of Science (one credit of which must be a lab Science) 1 credit of Thinking Science* 1 credit of Biology* 1 additional credits of Science * Required of all students unless exempted to move into a higher-level Science 4 credits of Mathematics 1 credit of Algebra I * to be taken during the freshman year 1 credit of Geometry * to be taken following successful completion of Algebra I 1 credit of Algebra II * *required of all students unless exempted to move into a higher-level math 2 credits of Foreign Language (must be two years of the same foreign language) 1 credit of Fine Arts This requirement can be satisfied by successfully completing two semesters (1/2 credit each) to be selected from the list of Fine Arts subjects as defined by the Arizona Board of Regents. 6 elective credits to be selected from the course offerings approved by this District Students transferring from other schools will be eligible to graduate if they meet the requirements of this District. CORE POINT AVERAGE (CPA) The Arizona Board of Regents establishes selection criteria for entrance into our three state universities: Arizona State University, University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University. The Board of Regents has determined that calculation of Grade Point Average (GPA) for admissions must be computed using the core subjects listed below when admission is based upon courses taken in high school: Subject Credits Specifics English 4 credits Devoted exclusively to the study of English. Mathematics 4 credits Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and one additional class for which Algebra 2 is a prerequisite. Science 3 credits All Lab Sciences. Social Science 2 credits US History and one additional year from courses such as: 1. European or World History 2. Economics 3. Sociology 4. Geography 5. Government 6. Psychology 7. Anthropology Foreign Language 2 credits Must be the same foreign language. Fine Arts 1 credit May be either Fine or Performing Arts. For admissions purposes, Arizona State University, University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University each calculate grade point averages based upon the sixteen units of core coursework requirements mentioned above. ix Revised January 2009
