Look at the transformation which has gone on around us since the laws of gravitation, electricity, magnetism, and the expansive power of heat have become known to us. It has altered our whole state of existence one might say, the whole face of the globe. We owe this to science, and to science alone; and she has other treasures in store for us, if we will but call her to our assistance. PROFESSOR ALICE GAST PRESIDENT, IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON Welcome to the Imperial 1851 Circle Imperial s leadership giving circle which honours philanthropic donors to the College Welcome to the Imperial 1851 Circle, which honours the visionary group of donors who have given between 1,000 and 4,999 to the College in a 12-month period. We are tremendously grateful for your commitment to sustaining Imperial s future as a leader in learning, innovation and research. By investing in Imperial at this level, you play a leading role in the College community and we honour your generosity. Prince Albert s vision The Circle is named in recognition of Prince Albert s vision for a new scientific and cultural quarter in South Kensington, which was made possible following the success of the Great Exhibition of 1851. Historic origins Look at the transformation which has gone on around us since the laws of gravitation, electricity, magnetism, and the expansive power of heat have become known to us. It has altered our whole state of existence one might say, the whole face of the globe. We owe this to science, and to science alone; and she has other treasures in store for us, if we will but call her to our assistance. A L B E RT, P R I N C E CO N S O RT. 1849. + Imperial can trace its origins back to the Great Exhibition of 1851, organised by Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria and one of the most visionary thinkers of his time. Following the success of the Great Exhibition, Prince Albert championed the development of a scientific and educational hub in the South Kensington area, of which Imperial is now part. The Queen s Tower, shown here, is one of the oldest structures on the College s South Kensington Campus, and is a symbol of Imperial s long and enduring heritage, which owes much to the extraordinary legacy of Prince Albert.

+ Scholar Julian Martin Make a lasting impact As a member of the Imperial 1851 Circle you are making a transformative impact, enabling the College to provide essential support and address immediate needs in areas such as scholarships, research, teaching and outreach initiatives. (Geology) visits the lab of Professor Marc Sephton (left) to learn about his work on the ExoMars joint ESA/ NASA mission to deliver rovers to the surface of Mars, where they will search for evidence of past or present life on the planet. For our scholars like Julian and Clarissa (right), your gift can open doors to an Imperial education and help them make the most of their College experience. For research staff and academics, your gift provides the opportunity to pursue truly innovative and world changing research. And support for the College s outreach initiatives makes a tangible difference to improving communities both locally and around the globe. + Imperial College PhD Scholarship recipient Rowan Brackston (Aeronautics) is working on experimental research into flow control for bluff-body drag reduction which aims to reduce drag for automotive vehicles. His work could lead to many further improvements in aerodynamics in the future. Thank you for choosing to invest in the future of the College; it is through the generosity of our donors that we can enhance the breadth and scope of philanthropically funded initiatives and help sustain Imperial s leadership in the fields of innovation and discovery. + Scholar Clarissa de Pentheny O Kelly (Medicine) with endocrinologist Professor Waljit Dhillo in his laboratory at Imperial s Hammersmith campus. They are discussing his research which has identified novel targets for the development of anti-obesity drugs.
