MARY AIKENHEAD EDUCATION AUSTRALIA ADVISORY COUNCIL Following a process of review and discernment undertaken in 2012, the Trustees of Mary Aikenhead Ministries announced in 2013 the establishment of an advisory council to support them in the stewardship of their education ministry. The ministry currently consists of four girls secondary Colleges across three States: Mt St Michael s College, Ashgrove in Queensland, St Vincent s College, Potts Point in New South Wales, and Catholic Ladies College, Eltham and St Columba s College, Essendon in Victoria. Upon the establishment of the Council, Trustee Emeritus Professor Gabrielle McMullen AM stated, Mary Aikenhead Ministries are privileged to have stewardship of these fine colleges as part of their heritage from the Sisters of Charity of Australia. Into the future, the Trustees seek to deepen and broaden their education ministry. The role of the Mary Aikenhead Education Australia Advisory Council is to support the Trustees in their discernment and decision-making in relation to stewardship of the education ministry, Mary Aikenhead Education Australia. The Council is charged with providing high level strategic advice in regard to Mary Aikenhead Education Australia s fidelity to its Catholic identity and mission within a contemporary interpretation of the charism of Mary Aikenhead, particularly in its service of the poor and disadvantaged. It also ensures that the Trustees are kept abreast of developments in national and state education sectors, Catholic and Government, as well as providing advice in regard to leadership formation, and the deepening and broadening of Mary Aikenhead Education Australia. Mr David Hutton OAM, former Executive Director of Catholic Education in the Archdiocese of Brisbane, was appointed inaugural chair of the Advisory Council, which also has membership of Council members Ms Kate Clancy, former Principal of Santa Sabina College, Strathfield in Sydney; Professor Marie Emmitt, former Executive Dean of Education at Australian Catholic University; Mr Paul Herrick, Regional Director Melbourne of Marist Schools Australia; Ms Anna Ehler, Professional Assistant to the Executive Director of the Queensland Catholic Education Commission; and Ms Julie Taylor, former Mission Integration Manager at St Vincent s Hospital Sydney. Detailed information regarding the professional background and experience of each Council member is to be found below. Matters relating to the governance of Mary Aikenhead Education Ltd, which has responsibility for the fiduciary and civil accountabilities associated with the College companies and properties, continue to be undertaken by the Mary Aikenhead Education Ltd Board. The Trustees of Mary Aikenhead Ministries are currently the Directors of Mary Aikenhead Education Ltd.

Council Chair: Mr David Hutton OAM David Hutton was educated at Christ the King School, Graceville and Marist Brothers College, Rosalie. He subsequently completed bachelor degrees in Commerce and Education (University of Queensland) and Theology (Melbourne College of Divinity) and a Master of Educational Administration degree (University of New England). From 1985 to 1989 he worked for Brisbane Catholic Education as Executive Officer within the Religious Education Team and Faith Education Services. In 1990, he was appointed Assistant Director Administrative Services, a position he held for nine years. From November 1998 to January 2013 he was Executive Director of Catholic Education within the Archdiocese of Brisbane. David has been a member of the following bodies: the Ministerial Advisory Committee for Non-State Schools, the Ministerial Advisory Committee for Educational Reform, the Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC), the QCEC Executive, the QCEC Political Action Committee, the QCEC Catholic Capital Programs Committee, the Queensland Catholic Education Directors Forum, the Archdiocesan Pastoral Planning Committee, the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council, the Non-Government Schools Council and the Ecumenical Schools Group. He was appointed in 2012 by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference to the National Catholic Education Commission review panel. David is a Fellow of both the Australian Council for Educational Leaders and the Australian College of Educators, and an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Catholic University. In June 2012 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to education in Queensland. Council Member: Ms Kate Clancy Kate Clancy completed her secondary education with the Dominicans at St Mary s School, Maitland and has a Diploma of Teaching and Graduate Diplomas in Religious Education and Educational Studies, as well as Master of Education (Australian Catholic University) and Master of Professional Ethics (University of NSW) degrees. Kate has held significant leadership positions in Catholic education including Assistant Principal and Principal of All Hallows School, Fivedock and Principal of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Gladesville. From 1991 to 1997 she worked for the Catholic Education Office Sydney as a Regional Consultant, and in 1998 was appointed Head of Primary Curriculum, a position which she held until 2006, before taking up the role of Director for the Inner West Region in 2007. In 2008 Kate was appointed the first lay Principal of Santa Sabina College, Strathfield, retiring from this position at the end of 2012. Kate has been a member of the following bodies: the Association of Independent Schools Funding Committee, NSW Congregational Leaders of Religious Institutes Education Committee, Committees of the Catholic Education Commission, the Primary Curriculum Committee and A-E Committee of the NSW Board of Studies and the Professional Learning Advisory Committee of the NSW Institute of Teachers.

In 2012 Kate was recognised for Excellence in Community Engagement by the NSW Parents Council. She is a Fellow of the Australian Council for Educational Leaders, and a member of the Australian College of Educators and the St James Ethics Centre. Council Member: Mrs Anna Ehler Anna Ehler was educated in Kempsey, NSW, attending St Joseph s Primary School, Pius X High School and Kempsy State High School. She later graduated from the University of New England with a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education (First Class Honours), and from the Brisbane College of Advanced Education with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching. Anna has been involved in Catholic education in Queensland as a teacher, parent, university lecturer and executive officer for almost 40 years. She is currently employed at the Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC) as the Professional Assistant to the Executive Director and is Executive Officer for the QCEC Catholic Education Week Sub-committee. Anna s introduction to the tradtion of the Sisters of Charity and the charism of Mary Aikenhead began in 1999 when the first of her two daughters commenced her secondary education at Mt St Michael s College, Brisbane. In 2004 Anna was appointed a Director of the Mt St Michael s College Board and chaired the Board from 2008 to 2011. She also participated in a number of reflection and formation days during the implementation and establishment phases of Mary Aikenhead Ministries. Council Member: Professor Marie Emmitt Professor Marie Emmitt recently completed her second term as Executive Dean of Education at Australian Catholic University (ACU), a position she had held since 2004. Prior to this appointment Marie was Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) and Head of School, Faculty of Education at Deakin University. Marie attended St Joseph s School in Finley, NSW and completed her secondary education at Genazzano College in Kew, Victoria. She has a Trained Infant Teachers Certificate (Toorak Teachers College) and a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and Master of Education (Monash University). Marie s professional career began as an infant teacher and she has maintained a long interest and expertise in language and literacy education. Her research includes early years, middle years and workplace literacy. She was the Director of the Middle Years Literacy Research Project, and the Literacy Project Leader for the Review of the Implementation of the Early Years Literacy and Numeracy Programs for the Victorian Department of Education and Training. In the 1990s Marie was the Academic Director at Deakin University for a World Bank project on training primary school teachers in Indonesia. More recently she has worked with colleagues from

ACU and other universities and some members of the Jesuit community to provide tertiary education to refugees in camps along the Thai-Burma border. Through the University she was involved in education in Timor-Leste, Pakistan and Mauritius and more recently with the Jesuits in establishing a secondary school and teachers college outside Dili in Timor-Leste. Marie has been a member and chair of a number of State English curriculum committees, a member of the National Curriculum Board, national President of the Australian Literacy Educators Association, and a Council member of Xavier College, Kew and St Ignatius College, Riverview. She is currently chair of the St Mary s Primary School Board, East St Kilda and a member of the Faithful Companions of Jesus Education Advisory Board and a former member of the Jesuit Schools Commission. She is a life member and Fellow of the Australian College of Educators. Council Member: Mr Paul Herrick Paul Herrick has gained the qualifications of Bachelor of Arts, Diploma in Education, Graduate Diploma in Curriculum and Master of Educational Leadership. He has over twenty years experience as a Principal in both primary and secondary schools, including Marcellin College, Bulleen and Marymede Catholic College, South Morang in Victoria and Newman College in Perth. Paul held the position of Manager, Leadership and Accountability at the Catholic Education Office Melbourne before joining Edmund Rice Education Australia as Southern Regional Administrator covering Victoria and Tasmania. He is currently Regional Director Melbourne for Marist Schools Australia. He has served on the St Columba s College Board, Essendon since 2004 and was appointed Chair of the Board in January 2012. Paul is currently a member of the Marist Schools Australia Leadership Team, the Marist Schools Australia representative on the Catholic Religious Victoria Education Committee and the Catholic Religious of South Australia Education Committee, and a Director of Catholic Capital Grants Victoria Ltd. Council Member: Ms Julie Taylor Julie Taylor was educated at St Aloysius College, Hamilton in Newcastle and completed her Higher School Certificate at Mercy College, Chatswood. She has a Diploma in Teaching (Kuring-gai CAE), Bachelor of Education (Mitchell CAE) and Graduate Diplomas in both Religious Education (University of South Australia) and Theological Studies (Sydney College of Divinity). She has also completed a Master of Education in Adult Education (University of Technology Sydney) and a Master of Arts in Theological Studies (Sydney College of Divinity). Julie is the former Mission Integration Manager at St Vincent s Hospital Sydney, Darlinghurst Campus. She has previously had a number of significant roles in the Catholic education sector. She has been an Advisor, Disadvantaged Schools Programme for the Catholic Education Office Sydney. Between 1988 and 2002 she held leadership positions in Catholic education, including as Assistant Principal at both St Luke s Primary School, Revesby and All Saint s Primary School, Liverpool and Principal at St Mark s Primary School, Drummoyne. From 2003 to

2011 Julie was one of the founding Directors of the Chevalier Institute of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, Kensington and also lectured at the Broken Bay Institute in courses offered by the Chevalier Institute and at Australian Catholic University. Julie has served on the following committees: Principals Executive Committee for the Catholic Education Office Sydney, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart National Spirituality Ministries Committee and Lay and Professed Council, and the Mission Competency Reference Group for Catholic Health Australia.
