TRANSFORMING our world Scholarships: Investing in the Future of Temple Students

For many Temple students, a scholarship means the difference between attending Temple or another institution or not attending college at all. providing educational opportunity for talented students, regardless of their means, is at the heart of Temple University s mission. These students become the future teachers, thought leaders and role models in their fields and communities, and empowering them to achieve is vital. Economic challenges, decreases in state appropriations and increases in tuition make that task more difficult. However, Temple is as committed as ever to keeping the dream of founder Russell Conwell a reality for the nearly 40,000 bright and motivated undergraduate, graduate and professional students who are the heart and soul of the university. providing the resources to excel It is for that reason that Temple University has undertaken an historic initiative to raise funds in support of scholarships for Temple students. With the help of alumni and friends, Temple aims to increase financial aid resources by $100 million the largest amount for student scholarship aid in Temple history.

I was accepted to a number of colleges, but Temple gave me the financial aid I needed to start my life on the right foot. The freedom that merit scholarships have given me allows me to tutor high school students, volunteer in Temple s community gardens, serve as The gift of financial aid is a lifechanging one, as anyone who has received a scholarship themselves knows. A college education represents more than just academic achievement. It represents immense personal growth, finding a calling and building the tools needed to succeed in careers and relationships. It represents, in short, a gateway to a better life. an Owl Ambassador, and intern in a community housing program. Shay Kretowicz, CLA, Class of 2011 Scholarships empower students to excel in the disciplines of their choice, without being limited by the demands of working full time or having to take on excessive debt. This vital support changes not only the students lives, but all the lives these students touch when they graduate and take their places in the wider world. For these future leaders, financial aid may be the critical factor in their decision-making. By recognizing the power scholarships have to change lives and build for the future, Temple s alumni and friends can make an incredible difference for the men and women who study, learn and grow here. preparing for the future

when it comes time to give back, many alumni and friends support student scholarships. They remember fondly their own college days the excitement of opening an acceptance letter, the anxiety of the first semester s finals, the aha moments of finally connecting to a subject, and the exhilaration and immense sense of achievement surrounding graduation. And they recognize just how transformational those experiences were. Together, we can ensure those same opportunities are afforded to the next generation, and that current and future students continue to learn, grow and make a mark on the world, despite any financial barriers they may face. Your gift is the key. working together

As a medical student, I ve benefited significantly from scholarship support. Knowing there is support for my education has made it easier for me to focus on my studies and volunteer work. I plan to become a scholarship donor myself someday so that other The most direct way to support students is to make an unrestricted gift to student scholarships, allowing Temple the flexibility to direct scholarships to the areas of greatest immediate need and where they will have maximum impact on students. medical students can have the same opportunities. Wee Jhong Chua, School of Medicine, Class of 2012 Alternatively, your scholarship may be specifically designated in a variety of ways to benefit undergraduate students, graduate students, or students in a specific school or college, or to areas of critical importance such as financial aid for honors students or students from the local community. You also can determine whether your scholarship will be awarded based on financial need or academic merit. However you designate your gift, your choice will help to transform a life. making a difference

it begins with you You may choose to create an endowed scholarship, in which the principal of your gift is invested in the university s endowment and the annual return is directed to financial aid. Endowed scholarships are unique in that they exist in perpetuity, benefiting students for years to come. Your endowed fund s name, objectives and specific provisions for income distribution are agreed upon between you and the university. Alternatively, you may set up your scholarship support for immediate use ( term ), and your gift will be distributed in whole to students over a specified timeframe. However you make your gift, investing in student financial aid allows you to partner with Temple University in supporting the scholars who will become the leaders of tomorrow. transforming our world Supporting Undergraduate Scholarships at Temple University Ever since my uncle, an alumnus, took me to Temple football games when I was a kid, I wanted to go to Temple. But it wouldn t have been possible to leave Delaware and attend college out of state if it weren t for financial aid. I m working on my health professions degree, volunteering in a special education school, and I m proud to be an Owl. Lauren Frabizzio, CHPSW 14 Temple s 28,000 undergraduate students are the lifeblood of the university. They create Temple s campus culture, they drive academics and student activities, they determine Temple s local and global reputation, and, as future alumni and leaders, they set the course for Temple s future. Financial aid to undergraduate students enables Temple to fulfill its most essential function enabling bright, motivated students to attend college and gain access to the greatest opportunity of their lives. But more than that, for the students, financial aid allows them to make their marks on the world absent stifling debt or compromise. The majority of students hail from within Pennsylvania many from Philadelphia itself but also come from all 50 states and more than 123 countries. The undergraduate student body is one of the most diverse in the state, with more than half being female and more than 41 percent non-white. They also are among the best and brightest students in the country: Their average SAT scores are nearly 100 points higher than the national average and their graduation rate is 10 percent above that of their peers at other institutions. Temple undergraduates go on to be journalists, nurses, teachers, actors, engineers, entrepreneurs. Many will continue their educations through advanced study, becoming professionals and leaders in their fields. No matter what, their ability to realize their full potential through the gift of financial aid has a powerful impact on the students and on all the lives they touch after they graduate. Transform Our World Unrestricted gifts to financial aid are the best way to make an impact on Temple students lives, giving the university flexibility in meeting the most critical needs. Gifts can also be designated to support students at specific schools and colleges. Gifts can also create endowed scholarships which exist in perpetuity. Endowed scholarships can be created for any amount more than $50,000. transforming our world Supporting Honors Students at Temple University I had applied to six different universities when a friend suggested Temple. Ultimately, their Honors program and the financial aid package I received made the difference. Between Temple Honors and not having the specter of debt hanging over me, I have been able to double major, work as the executive producer and lead anchor of the Owl Sports Update for TUTV, and intern with the Eagles and the Flyers. None of that would have been possible without financial aid. Lindsey Bitler, SCT, CLA 12 The student body president. The commencement speaker. The editor-in-chief of The Temple News. The leads of school plays. Peer mentors and class tutors. At Temple, Honors students are more than just the smart kids. They are the opinion-leaders, difference-makers and role models on campus. They are students who could go to any college they wish, but choose to come to Temple. And, once here, they make tremendous contributions to student life, academics and nearly every area they turn their attentions to. The Honors Program at Temple is home to more than 1,650 of the university s most motivated and accomplished students. Giving to Honors scholarships helps Temple to remain a competitive destination for the nation s leading high school seniors, as well as to provide supremely talented students from the Philadelphia region with the viable option to stay local. Ensuring that Temple continues to receive the highest quality applicants helps ensure Temple s future as a leading national public research university. Temple Honors students are the campus leaders in every discipline and college, and their successes raise the bar throughout the entire university community. Of Temple undergraduates, Honors students win a majority of the prestigious national awards each year, including Udall, Fulbright and Marshall awards. Their experience prepares them for post-graduate study and leadership in a vast array of fields, and they go on to become business owners, innovators and leaders around the world. Honors scholarships make a measurable impact on the quality of Temple s student body and educational programs. They also provide high-achieving students from all backgrounds with opportunities that enrich their academic, social and professional development. In short, a stronger Honors program results in a stronger university and world. Your gift is the key. Transform Our World Your unrestricted gift to support Honors students is the most direct way to make an impact on Temple s highest-achieving students, giving the university flexibility in meeting the most critical needs. Gifts can also create endowed scholarships which exist in perpetuity. Endowed scholarships can be created for any amount more than $50,000. transforming our world Supporting Graduate and Professional Students at Temple University Being a graduate student is a full-time job; it takes a lot of time and resources to begin to master a field. I could not have done it without financial support, which allowed me to buy critical data and materials necessary for my dissertation, and to work full-time on the project, including through the summer. Because of that support, I was able to complete my Ph.D., and to do it in time to accept a new position as an assistant professor at Winston Salem State University in North Carolina. Richard G. Moye, CLA 11 Temple s nearly 10,000 graduate and professional students are among the most committed and accomplished at the university. Their career paths require intensive study and training, and many become so deeply invested in a subject that they want to follow their educational paths as far as they can go. It is no coincidence that these men and women often go on to become the teachers or role models in their fields. With 226 graduate and professional degrees available, Temple ranks as one of the most diverse and comprehensive public research institutions for graduate education in the United States. And with degree programs such as dentistry, law, medicine, pharmacy and podiatric medicine, Temple University is the fourth largest provider of professional education in the country and prepares the largest body of professional practitioners in Pennsylvania. Regardless of their tract, these students are truly the leaders of tomorrow the next generation of doctors, lawyers, professors and luminaries in their academic or professional fields. Their impact on the world is amplified because they are able to take their educations all the way at Temple. Gifts to support graduate and professional students allow Temple to continue to train leaders in their respective fields, and to offer the highest levels of education possible to some of the best and brightest students in the university. They also help Temple continue to build a national reputation as a leading comprehensive research university, as its graduate students produce research and scholarship that materially contribute to their chosen areas of study. Finally, graduate support helps draw some of the nation s most accomplished students to Philadelphia, where they establish their law and medical practices, enter government, teach, start businesses and more. Transform Our World Fellowships and scholarships for graduate and professional students can cover all or part of a student s educational expenses and can be designated to a specific school, college, department or program. Endowed fellowships and scholarships which exist in perpetuity may also be established for minimum gifts that vary depending on the school, college or program. All gifts may be made in five-year payments. Learn more about establishing a fellowship at Temple University and the ways in which you can make a meaningful impact: Contact Institutional Advancement at 215-926-2546 or scholarships@temple.edu.

transforming our world Temple 20/20 Scholarships: Investing in the Local Community For seventy years we of Temple University have taken the community s sons and daughters, kept them with us for awhile, then returned them to give to Philadelphia and its environs better homes, better schools, better health, more happiness, more civilization. Temple s third president, Robert Livingston Johnson, in 1954, in his speech The Case for Temple University Temple draws students from all around the world, but in Philadelphia specifically it serves as a beacon of educational opportunity for students across the city. Since its founding, a critical strength of Temple University has been its close relationship to the city and community that surrounds it. A true urban campus with permeable boundaries, Temple University both reflects and shapes the city of Philadelphia. Forty-three percent of incoming freshmen come from the Philadelphia area, and many of them stay in the area after they graduate a full one in seven of college graduates in the Philadelphia region holds a Temple degree, and Temple prepares the largest body of professional practitioners in Pennsylvania. The university and its neighbors grow and develop together, and in recognition of that fact Temple has created the Temple 20/20 Scholarships. Temple s 20/20 campus development plan seeks to deepen the university s commitment to its community. As part of that initiative, Temple is providing more than 20 undergraduate scholarships every year through the year 2020 more than 250 in total to talented students hailing from the surrounding neighborhoods (the four ZIP codes that border Temple s Main Campus 19121, 19122, 19132 and 19133). These scholarships offer a unique opportunity to make an extraordinary impact on the university, its undergraduate student body and the development of North Philadelphia at large. Ever since founder Russell Conwell began tutoring local citizens late at night to accommodate their work schedules more than a century ago, the history of Temple and the city in which it lives has been intertwined. Your gift to Temple 20/20 Scholarships continues and builds upon that legacy. Transform Our World Your commitment of $20,000 $5,000 annually for four years will support this important program, and will give the gift of a Temple education to one local area student, ensuring that Temple and its surrounding community continue to grow and develop together.
