Then [Jesus] said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the Harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Matthew 9:37-38 NIV Student Ministry Handbook The Student Ministries Handbook provides an overview of the Student Ministries Program of Kingswood University. The Handbook describes the philosophy, objectives, and administration. Descriptions of approved Student Ministries are also included.

PHILOSOPHY Service is an integral part of the training program at Kingswood. Jesus Christ Himself is our model:... the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve... (Matthew 20:28). Jesus demonstrated this servant attitude when He taught and fed crowds of thousands, when He dealt individually with outcasts like Zacchaeus and the Samaritan woman, and when He washed the feet of His disciples, saying, I have set you an example, that you should do as I have done for you... Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them (John 13:15, 17). With such a powerful example and glorious promise for inspiration, Kingswood s Student Ministries Program supports the mission of the school in the following ways: Students are helped to develop a sound knowledge of the Scriptures by experiencing opportunities both to articulate their faith and to integrate biblical truths with practical concerns of life. Students are enabled to develop ministry skills for a life of Godly obedience and service as they practice these various skills in supervised settings in local churches, community agencies, or in University ministry opportunities. At Kingswood, we believe practical application of theoretical principles is vital. Therefore, Student Ministry assignments are designed to allow students to integrate classroom learning and practical ministry. The felt concern and practical input from the faculty in developing, coordinating, implementing, and supervising the Student Ministries Program will enhance the personal growth and vocational skills of the student. 3

OBJECTIVES Student Ministries provide the student with opportunities to integrate information, principles, and skills learned in the classroom with practical field ministry. As a result of involvement in Student Ministries, students should: Head (Cognitive what you should know and understand): Gain insight into the types of vocational and service opportunities available in the church and the community Discover and develop personal spiritual gifts and skills for ministry Heart (Affective what you should feel and appreciate): Cultivate a sensitivity to see needs and appropriately respond to them out of genuine Christian love Develop the desire to live selflessly, to give sacrificially, and to love wholeheartedly for the sake of Christ Gain an appreciation for the local church, God s agency for the propagation of the Gospel Hands (Behavioral what you should experience and do): Develop leadership qualities of planning, organizing, initiating, directing, supervising, and evaluating Increase personal confidence through positive service experience Develop cooperative working relationships in a variety of situations with various age groups Develop skills in self-evaluation and reflective thinking in order to promote selfawareness Habits (Tendency how you should apply what you have learned in your life): Use the tools to apply servant-hood with life-long learning and on-going engendering of spiritual growth and maturity. Apply ministry placement skills including interviewing and supervisor and site assessment skills 4

ADMINISTRATION Student Ministries Office The Director of Student Ministries (DSM) oversees the Student Ministry program at Kingswood University (KU), planning and supervising the program. Faculty advisors and program directors share in the responsibility of advising students to ensure Student Ministry assignments meet program objectives and students vocational goals. Directorship of this program includes: giving leadership to all areas of Kingswood s Student Ministries Program. coordinating Student Ministry assignments by working in harmony with local churches and agencies. encouraging students to put the required effort into their ministry assignments. periodically evaluating each student s ministry and keeping records of these evaluations. assigning student grades for this program and reporting them in Populi (the online student management system). Supervisor A Student Ministries supervisor may be a pastor, local church leader, agency personnel, faculty member, or other responsible person approved by the DSM. Supervisors play a vital role in the Student Ministries Program and help ensure a positive experience for all participants. With extremely few exceptions due to extraordinarily circumstances, a fellow student cannot supervise another student. It is our expectation supervisors will: become partners with KU in the training and development of each student. get to know the student and establish a warm, open relationship. provide reasonable and clearly communicated expectations for each ministry assignment. provide adequate observation of the student worker in order to instruct, encourage, and challenge as appropriate. schedule at least one meeting per month with the student for feedback and evaluation. contact the DSM in case of problems in which cooperative effort is needed. prepare and return the Supervisor Evaluation Report at the end of the semester. If possible please review the Supervisor Evaluation Report with the student. Communications and suggestions regarding the Student Ministries Program are appreciated. Students Selecting an Assignment Students are responsible to seek appropriate ministry opportunities in consultation with their faculty advisor and with the approval of the DSM. If absolutely necessary, the advisor and DSM will assist students in securing assignments. 5

Students should select 100-200 level ministry assignments during their first (frosh) and second (sophomore) years of study and 300-400 level assignments during their third (junior) and fourth (senior) years of study. No changes in assignment may be made without the prior approval of the supervisor and the DSM. At least one of your required Student Ministries should be directly related to your study major. Specific opportunities for ministry will vary from year to year according to the needs of churches and agencies. Students are limited to one intensive Student Ministry credit (which can be completed in a week). Faithful Involvement Student Ministry assignments require involvement throughout the entire semester. The student must take the initiative in faithfully fulfilling this obligation. However, in the event an absence is necessary, the student must contact the supervisor and DSM well in advance of the assignment. Failure to do so will result in severe grade reduction. Preparation and prayer for each ministry assignment requires the student s best effort. Faithful attendance and punctuality is of vital importance to the success of any ministry assignment. Dress and Deportment Classroom wear is appropriate for many Student Ministry assignments; however, students should dress in keeping with the occasion and situation. Students should consult with the ministry supervisor concerning appropriate dress. Students are required to adhere to the Code of Conduct as articulated in the Kingswood Student Handbook. In conduct, speech, and attitude students should show themselves to be exemplary - friendly, courteous, gracious, cooperative, and helpful. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS As with any university course, there are specific requirements for Student Ministry credits at Kingswood University. Details of due dates for written assignments, etc. are included in the syllabus on Populi. Initial Registration Students indicate interest in earning a Student Ministry credit at pre-registration, or at any time before the start of the ministry. Students register for the generic Student Ministry course SM 000 until a Student Ministry Contract is submitted. More details about selecting and registering for Student Ministries will follow below. 6

Submit a Contract To complete registration for a Student Ministry credit, students must submit a Student Ministry Contract. The contract must be submitted by both the student and the supervisor and then approved by the DSM. The purpose of this requirement is to ensure Student Ministry assignments are appropriate for the program and vocational objectives of each student. Contracts must be submitted by due date designated on syllabus. Students wishing to do a Student Ministry during Spring Break or during the summer should submit a contract at least one week prior to the beginning of the ministry. 1 Students who do not submit a contract must complete a Drop/Add form to avoid receiving an F grade for the ministry. Failure to complete a Student Ministry after registering and submitting a completed contract will also result in a grade of F. The contract is found online at: https://kingswooduniversity.wufoo.eu/forms/student-ministry-contract/ Complete the Ministry Students are expected to be involved in their ministry for at least ten weeks for a minimum of three hours per week. The three hours includes responsible preparation, performance of task, and any necessary consultation with field or faculty supervisors. This required time does not include travel, attending worship services, or other normal involvement (unless the latter constitutes a part of the student s ministry assignment). Activity Log Students must keep a log of the time spent in their ministry assignment including preparation time. Log entries must include the date of the activity, the activity, the number of hours spent at the activity, and the log entry date. Logs must also include the total number of hours spent on the Student Ministry assignment and the total number of weeks in the ministry assignment. See a sample of an Activity Log at end of this handbook. Reflective Journal One of the goals of the Student Ministries Program is to help students develop skills in selfevaluation and reflective thinking in order to promote self-awareness. This is achieved through writing periodic reflective journal entries. Each entry should be a brief description of ministry activities and reflections concerning them. See Objectives earlier in this handbook. Each entry must include the date of the ministry activity and the date of the journal entry. See samples of journal entries at end of this handbook. Activity Logs and Reflective Journals are to be submitted periodically during the semester, as well as at the end of the semester; see the syllabus on Populi for specific dates. Use the Wufoo form for submitting. The link is: 1 Students must pay for summer Student Ministry credits at the same time as they submit the contract. 7

https://kingswooduniversity.wufoo.eu/forms/sm-activity-log-reflective-journal/ Activity Log and Reflective Journal are combined documents. Reflection Paper In addition to weekly journal entries, students are required to write a 500 to 700 word reflection paper about the Student Ministry assignment. The paper must describe the ministry and tell about the rewards, challenges, lessons learned, and areas in which the student struggled. Please include a word count with your paper. Suggested Grade As part of the reflection process, students must suggest the grade they feel fairly represents their work at the ministry, and include a brief statement of why they would assign themselves this grade. This grade should be based on how well they feel they performed through the entire assignment preparations, performance, and evaluation (log, journal, reflection paper). The Reflection Paper and Suggested Grade are due at the end of the semester; see the syllabus on Populi for specific dates. All written assignments are to be submitted as MS Word files;.pdf or.rtf formats are permitted if you do not use MS Word. Supervisor Evaluation The Supervisor Evaluation Report is to be completed by the ministry supervisor near the end of each semester. Reports must be returned by date listed on syllabus. Usually a reminder will be sent from the Student Ministry Office shortly before the report is due. The form is found online at: https://kingswooduniversity.wufoo.eu/forms/student-ministry-supervisor-evaluation-report/ GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR SELECTING & REGISTERING FOR STUDENT MINISTRIES Students are encouraged to seek appropriate ministry opportunities in consultation with their faculty advisor and with the approval of the DSM. If a student is unable to secure an appropriate Student Ministry assignment, the advisor or DSM will assist in this process. Before students may begin their first Student Ministry they must have passed Wellness (GE 100), or have met with the DSM to review the administration of Student Ministries, writing requirements, and reflective thinking. Each student in a bachelor s degree program must earn a minimum of three Student Ministry credits to meet graduation requirements. Students in the A.A. (General Education) degree 8

program must earn two Student Ministry credits. Students who have previously been enrolled in the A.A. (Evangelism & Compassion Ministry) or A.A. (Early Childhood Education) programs will receive the equivalent of one Student Ministry credit in another degree program for the practical ministry component of these degrees. After the first year, and upon approval by the DSM, a student may earn a credit each summer in addition to credits earned during the school year. Regardless of the number of activities in which a student may be involved, only one Student Ministry credit can be earned each semester or summer. Exceptions may be made for the inclusion of one-week (40-hour minimum) intensive ministry assignments. To ensure diversity in ministry experiences, each Student Ministry earned must be different. The DSM may permit a credit to be repeated in consecutive semesters one time only. While the University values ministry experience gained prior to enrolment in one of Kingswood s programs, normally credit is only granted for Student Ministry assignments completed while enrolled as either a part-time or full-time student in one of the regular University programs. At least one of your required Student Ministries should be directly related to your study major. B.A. (Ministry) students should seek to complete at least one ministry in a church setting; those pursuing pastoral ministry should aim for more than one. B.A. (Christian School Education) students should seek to complete at least one ministry in a school setting. In the event an exceptional circumstance arises causing a student to believe it is necessary to withdraw from a Student Ministry assignment, he or she must receive permission from the DSM. Failure to do so will result in a letter grade of "F. There is no withdrawal policy for one-week intensive Student Ministries. GRADING Grading of SM assignments is outlined in the syllabus (posted on Populi). These are the main components: Effective & consistent fulfillment of the ministry assignment Activity Logs & Reflective Journals Reflection Paper Supervisor Evaluation Report It is important to note that all requirements for the Student Ministry assignment must be met in a satisfactory manner. The Student Ministry Contract must be completed and returned to the DSM Office prior to the beginning of a Student Ministry assignment to be eligible for credit. Penalties will be assessed for late submission of the Final Reflective according to academic policy in the Kingswood University Catalogue. Late submission of weekly reports will cost twenty-five percent per day. 9

It is expected students will complete ten weeks of ministry during their Student Ministry. Completing less than nine weeks may result in a grade reduction or failure of the Student Ministry. Full participation is required for one-week intensive or summer Student Ministries. 10
