This doctoral degree was originally an applied doctorate degree. The doctoral program has evolved through the years to focus more on information and interaction design, and is now offered through the Sdlool of Information Arts and Technologies. The degree was also changed to a research degree, rather than an applied doctorate, in fall 2009. We'd like to change the name of the degree to a Doctor of Science in Information and Interaction Design, to reflect its current requirements and current focus. This new degree name will benefit our students by more accurately reflecting the content and focus of their doctoral work. It will also facilitate recruitment efforts, which are currently hampered by the uniqueness of the DCD degree designation (it is the only DCD degree in the world). It was designed for students or professionals in Publications Design who wanted an advanced degree that would add more innovative and often entrepreneurial applications. As an applied doctorate, with a fairly narrow focus, the uniqueness of the DCD degree (it is the only DCD degree in the world) was not a strong liability. However, the Doctor of Communications Design degree as currently constituted focuses on designing computer-based communication and information systems for educational or public sector applications, or on preparing graduates to work as advanced user research or online interaction design professionals. Some graduates also use the degree to prepare to teach in college and university settings. It is now a research degree, and the uniqueness of the degree is a serious liability both for our students (who must often explain that it is a real degree, and that they really have a doctorate degree) and for our recruitment efforts. Projects must be a work of application demonstrating the ability to apply professional skills of design and writing, to analyze a problem, to define an audience, and to integrate content, medium and market. Projects may be done in print, Internet, CD-ROM, or video. Skills Courses (9 credits): Three courses in information design, graphic design, and developing new media using PHP, ActionScript, or Ajax. Areas of Focus (9 credits): Two courses from one of the following areas: User Research Interaction Design for New Media Government/Public Sector Applications Educational Applications Electives (6 credits) Qualifying Exam Dissertation/Doctoral Project (12 credits) Dissertation projects must represent an original work of scholarship that contributes to the use of digital information systems in the areas of user research, interaction design, education, or the public sector. The dissertation project will generally combine theoretical and applied components. The practical component must have been developed through user-centered, iterative design. The theoretical component of the dissertation project must place the applied component into its scholarly and professional context through an extensive literature review. Projects must include a written analysis of the problem that included an audience and market analysis; a business or implementation plan; and an analysis of the social impact of the project or the values developed in it. Projects must have a direct application to the business community, to
