This doctoral degree was originally an applied doctorate degree. The doctoral program has evolved through the years to focus more on information and interaction design, and is now offered through the Sdlool of Information Arts and Technologies. The degree was also changed to a research degree, rather than an applied doctorate, in fall 2009. We'd like to change the name of the degree to a Doctor of Science in Information and Interaction Design, to reflect its current requirements and current focus. This new degree name will benefit our students by more accurately reflecting the content and focus of their doctoral work. It will also facilitate recruitment efforts, which are currently hampered by the uniqueness of the DCD degree designation (it is the only DCD degree in the world). For new courses or changes in existing courses (needed by Registrar) OLD Title: Course# I HE GIS Code: Credits: NEW Title: Course# I HEGIS Code: Credits: 0-2: Set forth the rationale for the proposal: The DCD or Doctor of Communications Design degree was established in 1999 as part of the Communication Design Division. The doctoral program has evolved through the years to focus more on information and interaction design, and is now offered through the Sdlool of Information Arts and Technologies. It was originally an applied doctorate degree, and was changed in 2009 to be a research doctorate degree. We'd like to change the name of the degree to a Doctor of Science in Information and Interaction Design, to reflect its current requirements and current focus. This new degree name will benefit our students by more accurately reflecting the content and focus of their doctoral woric The original Doctor of Communications Design degree focused on communications design, and was offered by the School of Communications Design. It was designed for students or professionals in Publications Design who wanted an advanced degree that would add more innovative and often entrepreneurial applications. As an applied doctorate, with a fairly narrow focus, the uniqueness of the DCD degree (it is the only DCD degree in the world) was not a strong liability. However, the Doctor of Communications Design degree as currently constituted focuses on designing computer-based communication and information systems for educational or public sector applications, or on preparing graduates to work as advanced user research or online interaction design professionals. Some graduates also use the degree to prepare to teach in college and university settings. It is now a research degree, and the uniqueness of the degree is a serious liability both for our students (who must often explain that it is a real degree, and that they really have a doctorate degree) and for our recruitment efforts. See the attached comparison of the original and current degree goals and requirements.

~~--~----- Original Program Description and Goals (1999): Current Program Description and Goals (2010): The DCD is a first professional degree that will prepare students to be leaders in a digital information society. It is intended that students will graduate with an understanding of the new digital technology, digital economy and digital culture; an appreciation of emerging communications systems; a critical and analytical perspective informed by history; a well-developed ability to produce content addressed to a variety of audiences; and the competence to create and manage complex projects in business, educational, or public sector environments. Original Program Requirements: 48 credits Core Courses (12 credits): PBDS 720 The Digital Economy PBDS 754 Promotional Strategies PBDS 810 Pro-Seminar One of the following: MGMT 762 Opportunity Analysis MGMT 763 Commercial Planning MGMT 797 New Venture The Doctor of Communications Design (DCD) prepares graduates to lead in developing and applying advanced communications techniques to commerce, culture, and society. Students learn to understand computing, networks, and communications media on both practical and conceptual levels. Learning Goals When students graduate they will be able to: Use and design new media effectively and innovatively Communicate their design solutions to communication problems effectively Apply principles of user-centered and iterative design to the development process Test aspects of the system for usability and appropriateness to its intended audience Evaluate new media in terms of a historically-informed, research-based scholarly and professional context Describe the social and cultural effects of information systems and their implementations Develop systems that can accommodate change and growth (plan for change and growth) Teach and publish in the area of new media (education track) Develop effective new media communication systems for the government or the public sector (public sector track) Current Program Requirements: 48 credits Core Courses (12 credits): IDIA 612 Interaction and Interface Design IDIA 842 User Research Methods PBDS 720 The Digital Economy IDIA 810 Proseminar
