02 LASALLE POSTGRADUATE PROSPECTUS

MA ARTS PEDAGOGY AND PRACTICE 03 Students in the MA Arts Pedagogy and Practice Programme are able to expand their knowledge of current teaching and learning strategies and apply them directly to their work in the arts. They are able to research from an interdisciplinary stance, reflecting on their own arts teaching experience, and contribute to a body of knowledge in the arts that is unique and valuable. Dr Kie Watkins, Programme Leader, MA Arts Pedagogy and Practice As an MA Arts Pedagogy and Practice candidate, you are concerned with developing your contemporary arts practice and nurturing future generations of emerging artists. Candidates come from a full range of creative and performing arts disciplines as well as visual, design, and curatorial practice. They are practicing artists and active educators who wish to integrate current arts pedagogy into their work. For individuals who are deeply invested in nurturing and mentoring the next generation of emerging artists, the Programme underscores the importance of developing a critical pedagogical approach. This is in order to enable long-term capacity for exploration and openness to new and varied experiences that will support teaching in the arts in a constantly repositioning society and landscape. Candidates will develop critical skills, self-awareness, and reflexivity within their own perspective to become highly effective in supporting their students growth as artists working across diverse areas. Candidates have the opportunity to transform their practice for the benefit of their students, community and industry, themselves, and to contribute to the growing field of research in arts education. The MA Arts Pedagogy and Practice Programme is a one-and-ahalf year, three-semester programme. It is structured to offer an educational development opportunity while enabling individuals to continue with professional practice. LASALLE offers an interdisciplinary teaching and learning environment where experienced artists from vastly different backgrounds and interests are immersed in pedagogical discussion and research. The Programme is designed to develop artists, practitioners, educators, and researchers who wish to know more about educational theories, curriculum design, and content delivery, as well as assessment strategies. Students will build upon their skills and knowledge, and develop strategies to support students to break boundaries and create new contemporary work.

04 LASALLE POSTGRADUATE PROSPECTUS PROGRAMME STRUCTURE Students will engage in discussions about teaching the arts in a global city where many arts traditions from East and West collide, mingle, and transform into new hybrid art forms. You will journey through three semesters of work that correspond to the following areas of investigation: MODULES DESCRIPTION & CREDIT POINTS SEMESTER 1 Investigating Practice Experiencing Diverse Pedagogies SEMESTER 2 Research Methods Transforming Practice SEMESTER 3 Research Investigation and Presentation CREDIT POINTS MODULE 1: Investigating Practice You are encouraged to reflect on the context in which you teach and make art, and to evaluate the impact this has on your current practice. Critical reflection of your current pedagogy in relation to arts practice is emphasised. You will examine your individual preferences to enable you to articulate your perspectives in a meaningful and informed manner. MODULE 2: Experiencing Diverse Pedagogies This module prepares you to evaluate best-practice teaching, and how you can integrate your practice/research into the teaching and learning experience. You will have the opportunity to witness, understand, and appreciate a range of approaches and methodologies used by fellow educators within your immediate circle of interest and influence. Through such interactions, you will critique and evaluate your pedagogical approaches. This module also introduces you to interdisciplinary processes and to theories and concepts within collaborative pedagogical research. 20 40 CREDIT POINTS 20 40 CREDIT POINTS 60 MODULE 3: Research Methods In this module, you will be introduced to research methods from traditional quantitative and qualitative strategies as well as those that are ethnographic, embodied, or theoretical in nature. The content of the module will also lead to the study of research design, and will give you the opportunity to learn about the various parts of a research proposal. You will develop a draft research proposal with intentions for that draft to be actualised in the next module, Transforming Practice. MODULE 4: Transforming Practice The purpose of this module is for you to engage with new/other forms or processes in research to transform your arts practice and pedagogical approach. You will be involved in researching, applying and experimenting with one or more of the following: cross/trans/inter-disciplinarity practice cross/trans/inter-cultural practice alternative pedagogical practices new media or technologies to the practice As a result, you will enact your research plan in order to demonstrate and evaluate this new/renewed approach, method, art form, context, theory, or collaboration to ascertain if it can transform your practice, and transform the learning of your own students as emerging artists. MODULE 5: Research Investigation and Presentation In this module, you will engage in research on an aspect or aspects of arts education of particular interest to you. You will expand your knowledge of the rigour and process of academic research and writing as well as other approaches to arts research, such as practice-based and practice-led research, in order to further develop your analytical, reflective, and communicative skills. You will have the opportunity in this module to complete a traditional academic thesis with an oral/visual presentation component, or to complete a personal arts presentation and an academic thesis of shorter length.
