HAYWOOD CHEUNG 2014 DBA Graduate 2012 EMBA Graduate President, The Chinese Gold & Silver Exchange Society Chairman, Target Insurance (Holdings) Limited President, The New Territories General Chamber of Commerce Dr Cheung has been engaged in the financial services sector for over 30 years, involved in trading precious metals, securities and futures, and foreign exchange. This earned him a reputation as the "King of Gold". In recent years, whenever the media reports on gold trading and monetary affairs, Dr Cheung is invited to offer his comments and analysis. However, despite already being quite a celebrity in the finance industry, he felt he was missing something and, therefore, decided to return to school at the peak of his career, choosing to enrol in the CityU EMBA Programme. I have worked in financial markets for more than 30 years. While I have made my name in the industry, I felt there was still a gap in my life in terms of the formal recognition I need when speaking for the industry and the academic identity I need when speaking from a podium. The CityU EMBA offered exactly what I was looking for to meet my needs in these areas." Dr Cheung said that the continuity of the programme, specifically the DBA through-train, was a major consideration when choosing the CityU EMBA. After completing the first year of the EMBA, he could immediately enrol for the DBA, which saved time and trouble. Besides gaining new academic distinction, Dr Cheung is enthusiastic about public service and contributing to society in different ways. He is committed to the CityU EMBA Association and, as the Honorary Chairman of its Charity Trust, participates in and promotes their activities. Apart from returning to my alma mater to connect with fellow alumni, I want to make more people aware of CityU's excellence. It is important to raise funds for charity, but we also want to raise public awareness, build a stronger network, and promote the CityU EMBA. He added that career success depends on knowledge and experience, but networking and connections are also a key factor. Many of my fellow EMBA students were senior executives and entrepreneurs. I benefited a great deal from sharing experiences with them. Taking part in alumni affairs has also brought me into contact with teachers and students from other years. This has created a truly cross-generational network."
JENNY CHAN 2009 EMBA Graduate Sales Director, KGI Asia Ltd. Thanks to ability and perseverance, Jenny Chan has had a successful career in the securities industry and is now the chief executive of a leading company in the sector. In 2008, she attended a two-week course at the University of California, Berkeley and had the chance to meet and learn from executives running big corporations around the world. Finding a balance between career and family responsibilities is difficult enough. But Jenny Chan, a mother and senior executive with a securities company, also took on the challenge of an EMBA, reasoning that if her children were studying then she should be too. Before taking the CityU EMBA, she was very much a layman in terms of technology and computers. However, the curriculum helped her to see the importance of IT in the securities sector and elsewhere. Later on, when my company needed to build an enhanced IT system to improve efficiency, I applied what I had learned and could offer advice which surprised my colleagues." She added that the lasting value of the EMBA is that it gives so much more than textbook learning. Ms Chan was the first person from the Hong Kong business community to become a Stanley Wang Fellow of the University of California, Berkeley. She was awarded a scholarship for the 6-week Executive Leadership Programme. Learning from world-renowned professors alongside executives from top global enterprises was an experience she won t forget. All the students there were very active in expressing their thoughts and opinions, which was a positive influence on me. I hope that more people with ideals and aspirations choose to enrol in the CityU EMBA, because they will learn so much more than by just being in the workplace. When they apply this new wisdom in practical ways, they will definitely see the benefits.
BOBBY LIU Current DBA Participant 2012 EMBA Graduate CEO, Milton Holdings International Ltd Vice-Chairman of Mainland Affairs Committee, Federation of Hong Kong Industries Vice President, Hong Kong Young Industrialists Council Bobby Liu was born and bred in Hong Kong in less than privileged circumstances, but he rose to become head of a business with annual turnover touching HK$1 billion. Founded in 1990, Milton Holdings began as a distributor for plastic raw materials and has since evolved into a leading supplier of engineering and highperformance polymers. Headquartered in Hong Kong, the company now has branch operations in eight cities across China, including Guangzhou, Shanghai and Tianjin.. "I had worked in the financial, logistics and trading industries, and it was pure coincidence that I got exposed to and interested in the plastics sector. Later, I went to Sun Yat-sen University to further my studies and, inspired by the teachers there, saw the potential in plastics and decided to start a new business. We started in southern China and had expanded to eastern and northern cities by the end of 1999. The business was already well established before Liu decided to take the CityU EMBA. I had achieved some success and had a lot of practical experience, but figured that if I wanted to advance to the next level in personal and professional terms, I had to enhance my skills and upgrade my management expertise. I chose the CityU EMBA because of its excellent reputation. Also, several of my friends are CityU EMBA graduates and they strongly recommended the programme. Among other things, the course inspired Liu to introduce aspects of traditional Chinese culture into day-to-day business practice. The professors helped him understand that, in Chinese culture, a business was not all about productivity and profits, but should have another dimension, which engaged the heart. That is a concept he now practises and preaches to the local management teams in the company s branch offices. The CityU EMBA allowed me to interact with people from different sectors, who inspired me to invest more time in serving society and the helping the wider business community. One of these friends showed me the importance of helping schools for the children of poor families and of encouraging talent generally. "The programme gave me life-long benefits. It was a first step and now I am studying for the DBA, as a way to advance my business and keep developing as a person.
