Specifically, I examine how student-athletes balance their roles as athletes and students, both of which are highly demanding roles, and which aspects of each of those roles are most stressful. Then, I analyze which types of support and coping strategies are most effective at helping student-athletes overcome these challenges. I use a mixed methods research design that draws from participant observation, interview, and survey data collected from a representative sample of Division I collegiate athletes to ascertain how both the sources and consequences of stress may be most effectively reduced to improve the mental health and well-being of collegiate student-athletes. 2011 Qualifying Exam: Sociology of Health, Illness, and Healing Committee: Peggy Thoits (chair), Eliza Pavalko, and Youngjoo Cha 2011 Preparing Future Faculty Certificate in College Pedagogy Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana 2010 Master of Arts, Sociology Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana Thesis: The Social Demography of Health: Exploring the Health Profiles and Acculturation Effects of Recent U.S. Immigrants Committee: Patricia McManus (chair), Pamela Braboy Jackson 2006 Bachelor of Arts, Sociology and Economics, Summa Cum Laude Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, Illinois AREAS OF INTEREST Medical Sociology Sociology of Mental Health Sociology of Education Sociology of Sport Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Social Psychology
