City of Angels School Independent Study Los Angeles Unified School District INSTRUCTIONAL GUIDE CC Algebra 2A Course ID #310343 (CCAA Field Test Version) Big Ideas Math This course is the first semester of Common Core Algebra 2, fulfills one half of three years in the B requirement (for A-G course prerequisites for entering the UC and CSU) and is designed specifically for independent study. Content Material covered in this course is in line with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Students will be expected to master the following standards for practice (as in all math courses) and conceptual categories (for this course only): Standards for Mathematical Practice 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. (MP.1) 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. (MP.2) 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. (MP.3) 4. Model with mathematics. (MP.4) 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. (MP.5) 6. Attend to precision. (MP.6) 7. Look for and make use of structure. (MP.7) 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. (MP.8) For a complete listing of the state Common Core Standards in detail, you can download a copy from: http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/cc/. To view the LAUSD curricular map for this course, go to http://math.lausd.net. Units and Clusters SEMESTER 1 Unit 1: Model and Reason with Equations and Inequalities Creating Equations (A-CED) Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities (A-REI) Unit 2: Structure in Expressions and Arithmetic with Polynomials Seeing Structure in Expressions (A-SSE) Arithmetic with Polynomials and Rational Expressions (A-APR) SEMESTERS 1-2 Unit 3: Functions Interpreting Functions (F-IF) Building Functions (F-BF) Linear, Quadratic, and Exponential Models (F-LE) Number and Quantity (Conceptual) SEMESTER 2 Unit 4: Geometry and Trigonometry Expressing Geometric Properties with Equations (G.GPE) Trigonometric Functions (F.TF) Unit 5: Statistics and Probability Interpret Categorical and Quantitative Data (S-ID) Making Inferences and Justifying Conclusions (S-IC) Using Probability to Make Decisions (S-MD) Text (California) Big Ideas Math, Algebra 2: A Common Core Curriculum, Ron Larson and Laurie Boswell, 2015 Websites and Software https://www.bigideasmath.com/students/ The textbook companion website offers students various helpful resources including supplemental tutorials on Algebra concepts, links to other useful sites and online videos. Every Lesson in the text has an accompanying Online Personal Tutor video that explains and demonstrates key concepts. It is strongly recommended that students view the videos before attempting to complete the problems for that Lesson. No username or password is needed to access the online resources. http://coastudent.net or (direct link): http://www.lausd.net/city_of_angels/igs/cws/alg1a.html The web page for City of Angels students is a portal to online resources for all core courses (and some electives) offered at our school. To access online resources for the Algebra 1A/B courses, click on the textbook image on the left side of the screen and choose either the A or B course website. Links for each lesson in the textbook go to online videos and tutorials by Glencoe (the publisher of the textbook), Brightstorm (on YouTube), Khan Academy, and Pearson-Prentice Hall among others. School Computers Student computers at our school sites are loaded with various software programs including Thinkwell a series of lectures on each of the concepts covered in Algebra 1AB. Students should use the TW code listed on each assignment to access the appropriate video for that lesson. Continued on next page

Homework Students should expect to work two hours a day, five days a week on assignments for this course. Work submitted should be labeled with student name, course name, and assignment/week number. Students are expected to show all work and check odd-numbered answers using the answer key in the back of the book. Grades Final course grades will be based on the following matrix: Homework 40% Weekly 30% Assessments Chapter 25% Tests Final Exam 5% Weekly Assignments will be graded based on the following standard breakdown for work complete/correct: A 90-100% B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% F 0-59% Weekly Assessments will be graded on the following criteria: Accuracy (Did you get the 40% right answer?)
