REAL ESTATE & PLANNING AT READING UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES 2016-17 www.henley.reading.ac.uk/rep 2016-17

2 REAL ESTATE & PLANNING CHRIS STORY At the end of my second year, I was awarded an Access Internship with Cushman & Wakefield through RREF. The scheme aims to widen access to the property profession by giving students experience within a range of real estate firms through a formal internship. My internship at C&W was a fantastic experience. I learnt a tremendous amount about the company, what it is like working in the profession and it also gave me a better idea of what I wanted from a career in property. 1 ST FOR GRADUATE CAREER PROSPECTS FOR BUILDING AND TOWN & COUNTRY PLANNING (GUARDIAN UNIVERSITY GUIDE 2015) While I was at school I attended a presentation about the regenerative potential that the Olympics offered to the East of London and I became interested in the socio-economic development that property has to offer. When I was researching real estate courses at university, I spoke to contacts I had made in the industry and they all recommended studying at Reading. When I visited I was impressed with the fantastic facilities that the Business School offers students as well as the connections to the profession through the Reading Real Estate Foundation (RREF) and also by the thought leadership within the teaching staff. After the internship I was offered a graduate position at C&W. Having this offer at the start of my final year was a real help as I was able to focus on the degree, allowing me to achieve First Class Honours. Given this it s probably not surprising to know that I am incredibly grateful to RREF for all the opportunities they provide. University has been one of the most enjoyable times in my life and I have made many lifelong friends, both in and outside of the real estate degree. Since starting my career I have realised how fortunate I was to study at Reading. We were given opportunities and experiences that most other students do not have; for example, the Mentoring Programme and Evening Lectures that RREF facilitate. It s these openings that put Reading in a leading position, as not only do you receive a first class education but there are numerous opportunities to build your network and understand more about the profession. Please visit our Graduate of the Month page to see a wide range of career opportunities available to Real Estate & Planning graduates: www.henley.reading.ac.uk/repgotm RealEstateAndPlanning +RealEstatePlanningReading For further information visit: www.henley.reading.ac.uk/rep HENLEY IS TRIPLE ACCREDITED 1 2 3 AND IN 1% THE TOP OF BUSINESS SCHOOLS IN THE WORLD

REAL ESTATE & PLANNING 3 REAL ESTATE & PLANNING WELCOME Every day we are influenced by the built environment around us. Offices, shops, industrial buildings, houses and the surrounding countryside all have an impact on the quality of our lives. Did you ever wonder how those properties were developed, whether the buildings going up in our cities are sustainable, or how much they are worth? Here at Reading we offer you the opportunity to consider these questions and others, so that you will be equipped to influence and manage the future environment. Our undergraduate courses are designed to give you both a highquality degree and, importantly, a direct route into the real estate and planning professions. They combine a unique blend of academic rigour and applied practical analysis, offering an excellent foundation for your future career or for further academic study. Right from the start of your degree you will be involved in real world projects, where you will gain the tools to become an independent and active learner. Our project-based work is designed to develop your research skills and to connect your studies directly to practical problems. This is also a great way to meet others on the course, share ideas and work together to solve problems. Alongside this, classroom-based teaching and group tutorials help to reinforce what you are learning through your own work. Our academics are world leaders in their fields and so you can expect to be taught by internationally-renowned experts, with a wealth of academic and professional experience. We hope that this brochure inspires you and helps you make an informed decision on your undergraduate studies. I look forward to welcoming you as an undergraduate student in Real Estate & Planning for a stimulating and rewarding experience that will provide you with a great start to your professional life. Cathy Hughes Head of School Real Estate & Planning Our students enjoy outstanding career prospects as can be seen in our employability statistics. We are proud of the impact our graduates make across the world as they go on to realise their potential in a wide range of organisations. 1 ST IN UK FOR LAND AND PROPERTY MANAGEMENT (COMPLETE UNIVERSITY GUIDE 2016)

6 REAL ESTATE & PLANNING BSc REAL ESTATE BSc INVESTMENT & FINANCE IN PROPERTY The degree will give you an understanding of the breadth and depth of the property sector and allows you to make specialist choices later in the course. What to expect There are four pathways through this course, each related to a different aspect of the industry: development, investment, management and rural business studies. In order to achieve this flexibility, BSc Real Estate is divided into foundation studies in the first two years, followed by specialist studies in the final year. You will build a strong understanding of the core subject areas of economics, finance, business management, planning, law and construction, which you can then apply to complex problems in the real world. Throughout the course you have the opportunity to relate your new-found knowledge to real-life projects and case studies in both urban and rural environments. This will develop your understanding of the links between the subjects and, equally importantly, your presentation, writing and teamworking skills. This programme has full accreditation from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. What s next? As well as offering a direct route into the property and planning professions, this programme offers a solid foundation on which to build a career in a wide range of other fields such as finance, law, general management or consultancy. If you are interested in managing property investments and working with financial institutions, then this is the course for you. What to expect This degree develops your understanding of property from an investment perspective by demonstrating how real estate can be compared to other forms of investment such as shares and gilts. You will develop strong financial expertise, which will enable you to work not only in the property sector but also in a wider financial role. This programme builds on the BSc Real Estate course and the first two years studies are shared. In the final year your modules are focused on investment and finance subjects and address both the theoretical and practical aspects of real estate markets. You will undertake a number of applied investment and finance projects to develop analytical and key employment skills. This programme has full accreditation from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. What s next? In addition to direct entry into careers as real estate analysts or surveyors, many graduates from this programme have continued to further academic study or gone on to gain professional qualifications in fields such as accountancy. See page 12 for entry requirements For further information visit: www.henley.ac.uk/ug Real Estate & Planning graduates have the key attributes that any employer would look for commercial awareness, open minds, and a drive to succeed that stands out from the crowd. REAL ESTATE & PLANNING 7 BSc RURAL PROPERTY MANAGEMENT BSc REAL ESTATE WITH DIP / MSc URBAN PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT If you are interested in managing rural property, working with or on behalf of owners and occupiers of rural property, then this is the programme for you. What to expect This course is one of the few degrees available in the UK that recognises the diverse skills and knowledge required by rural surveyors and property advisors. It acknowledges the growing importance of proactive rural estate management in order to meet the expectations of owners and to maximise the potential of their assets. You will develop areas of expertise that will enable you to work not only in the rural surveying profession, but also in the wider business, environmental and support sectors in the countryside. This programme builds on the BSc Real Estate course and the first two years studies are shared. In the final year, modules are focused on rural property and address both theoretical and practical aspects of the subject. Drawing on our close links with the profession and local estates, you will undertake applied rural property and business projects to develop analytical and employment skills. This programme has full accreditation from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. What s next? Graduates from this programme develop areas of expertise that will enable them to work in the rural surveying profession and also in the wider business, environmental and support sectors in the countryside. This is a planning course with a difference. After four years you will have both an undergraduate and a postgraduate qualification and accreditation from two professional bodies. What to expect You will have a unique combination of skills and an edge over others in the market. You will have the ability to see the financial potential of any development opportunities and will be aware of the environmental and social issues involved in contemporary urban planning. This distinctive combination gives you a competitive advantage. This programme builds on the BSc Real Estate course and the first two years studies are shared. In the third year, you will specialise in development and planning and complete your undergraduate studies at that point. During the fourth year, you will take a twelve-month MSc Urban Planning & Development course which will give you Royal Town Planning Institute accreditation. This programme has full accreditation from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Royal Town Planning Institute. What s next? Graduates from this programme can go on to gain dual accreditation as both surveyors and planners, opening up a range of careers in both residential and commercial development and planning fields. Year after year, Reading graduates continue to impress us with their market knowledge and understanding of current issues.
